"Splash on. . . " Sunny almost finished before the warnings went off and called for the flight to break and deploy countermeasures, Sunny and Rosie breaking off to the right with Dusty and Bait going to the left.

There was only one fighter facing them now, but to Sunny it felt eerily familiar. . . .

With three of the four delta-canard fighters they targeted taken out of the fight by Ferret, Hime, and Matchstick respectively with their AIM-120D volley; the unit broke off and deployed chaff promptly after the success of their launches. The F-16's twisted, rolled, and turned as they continued their evasive maneuvers; making sure that their aircraft were orientated in a way that would allow them to reply with more AMRAAM's or Sidewinders if the situation called for it. Despite his elation that he had bagged his first kill in combat and that his girlfriend just got her second from BVR range, the incoming shots took priority.

"Make sure your noses are orientated towards the enemy; don't want to end up like those Mirages last time." Zack grunted as the G's he pulled in his machine pushed back against him. Word of the incoming JF-17's came in over the channel and did not go unnoticed by the ponytailed lieutenant and his comrades.

Hime meanwhile craned her head as she continued her maneuvers, making sure to keep a wide field of view. Her heart pounded as her earlier excitement gave a boost of adrenaline to her system. "Still evasive." she calmly said into the mic. Comet and Matchstick didn't say much as they concentrated on their maneuvering.

"Broadsword 1 defensive," Riley declared. He streamed his AN/ALE-55 and began a variety of turns and jinks, popping off chaff for good measure.

In the back seat, Hacker radioed the F-21s. "CAP, all SAMs are dead, good hunting."

Without their radars, immediately the Cheolemaes had gone dumb fast, freeing up the incoming strikers and fighters for the moment. Further batteries placed among the Shamlaki forces had begun to power down to avoid being picked off in the first few minutes of the fight, shifting the burden of defense to the fighters. Al-Saddi was perfectly fine with that; he would have any battery commander personally relieved if they were to steal his kills today. Immediately he ordered two of the remaining Typhoons to go fast and hard for the rest of Sunny's flight, while he took the VF-3 Ops O himself. The Major broke left and came from above towards Sunny, locking and firing and IRIS-T.

Eric was trying to think of a way to deal with two things at once. They had one Typhoon; Eric sicked the resident cowboy on it.

"Canis, we'll support you, those 17s to the south are yours for the first shot." Eric radioed, banking to his right.

He'd failed to bag anything, in fact the jet Mark was currently going to tear up was supposed to have been his kill. Eric quietly hoped there were some more bandits coming up to play...he wanted action now.

"Bakal, do we have more bandits from 103?" He asked. So far there were eight to there seven, though...

"Yes, we have four more...we're pressing Pantera Flight to support." The A-50 radioed.

"Roger that Bakal. Canis, Shogun, we'll shoot as soon as you do." Eric said, already searching for his first kill. With his two other wingmen in tow he swung to the right of the F-16s while they manuvered against the first volley of AMRAAMs and ordered them into a wedge.

In the meantime Mark had gone low to hit the EF2000 in the gut. Eric had helped him by putting the SRAF pilot off balancing, in fact the young lieutenent could still see the trail from Eric's AMRAAM. He eased the F-21's nose up as he closed, having selected his Sidewinders, and aimed to shoot before he got too close. Suddenly the Belkan-built fighter snapped down towards him.

"Holy shit!" Mark grunted, snapping right to avoid a collision. He then came back left to try again, looking over his shoulder. Had the guy gone suicidal or was he just that shaken by Eric's AMRAAM?

On the ground, Austin had to laugh for a minute as he watched the CBUs impact. He loved watching that kind of thing. Not many countries could stand against Osean firepower.

"Good hits, Basilisk, good hits. We'll sweep through and mop up." He radioed.

As Eagle was getting ready for their run, Bakal had an urgent re-tasking for them, with Broadsword included.

"Broadsword, Eagle, we have reports on a Bateleur MLRS and what may be a major artillery coordination center for the Shamlaki division facing the Third Infantry. Eagle, take out the center, Broadsword, sweep for anti-aircraft weapons and eliminate the MLRS vehicles." the AWACS radioed. Basilisk wasn't going to be alone for lone, either.

"Basilisk, Bakal, we have a request from the 32nd Guards. They report several Rooivalk helicopters have ambushed them and their immediate anti-air weapons have been destroyed during the initial contact. You'll be working with four Su-25s, callsign Lemnir. Engage immediately...we don't have a solid number due to the urgency with which the report was made."

I think this is the same guy we fought awhile back! He must want a rematch!

Sunny thought as he turned into his attacker, while dumping flares. There wasn't enough time to even attempt a head on shot.

"Sunny lead to flight, two bandits heading your way. Rosie, try to join up with me as soon as you can!" Sunny ordered while grunting at the G-forces.

"Copy lead, we'll take these guys." Dusty complied, as he and Bait turned to meet the offending fighters head on. Rosie did the same, the only way to get to her flight lead was through these two guys.

    Shamu radioed, "Basilisk copies."

As Sharky turned to their new heading, he asked Shamu, "You got anything?"

"Multiple contacts, down in the weeds.  Looks like helos.  Lemnir, Basilisk 1.  You have eyes on the helos Bakal tasked us to?"

"Broadsword copies, engaging AAA threats and MLRS systems," said Hacker. The Hornets rolled onto their new heading, closing on the battery's position. The backseaters looked at the images being fed from their targeting pods, scanning for any SAMs or SPAAGs in the area.

The four pilots formed up in pairs, keeping close tabs on one another in addition to giving their radar a glance while the F-21's of Shogun flight formed on their right. As Eric sent Mark to take care of the marauding EF-2000 that was left over from the initial attack; everyone else had their attention affixed to the incoming JF-17's that had entered the AO.

Zack kept his remaining AIM-120's at the ready with his comrades; unlike some of his fellow pilots who had mocked the JF-17 Thunder or FC-1 Xiaolong as the Verusans called it. Zack knew better than to underestimate the light fighter, as demonstrated by the Fulcrum flight that took losses to them in combat previously. Ferret ordered Mao and the others to fire on them the moment they came into range. Like clockwork; the Block 50's got the hostiles within range. Zack quickly locked and fired two of his AMRAAM's at two separate targets while Hime opted to be more conservative dedicating one of her own missiles to a target.

"Canis One. Fox Three, Fox Three!"

    "Hime. Fox Three!"

    "Canis Three. Fox Three!"

"Canis Four. Fox Three, Fox Three!"

Comet and Matchstick promptly fired on the formation with their own barrage, two missiles rocketed away from Rein's plane while one flew off from Denisov's craft. The volley fired totaled six missiles, trained on six targets.

Eagle flight arrived at their assigned position. "Target in sight." Irenee said to his squadron mates.

The four Mirages got a lock for their AS-30 missiles, and fired on the MLRS units.

"Basilisk, Lemnir, we do and are engaging them at this time. We count about eight." An accented voice reported.

Forward of the F-14s, the shape of an Su-25SM Frogfoot raced past a pair of small explosions from two Rooivalks it had just gunned. The aircraft pulled up steeply to avoid the incoming PMCs.

Sure enough as the attack came for the Baetleurs, while they were firing no less, the Shamlaki defenses that'd been placed around it received the coalition jets in the friendliest of manners. A pair of Croatales detected the Hornets first, firing on them. The follow-on attack by the Mirages, successful against the MLRS launchers as it was, was met by shoulder-fired Mistrals. A pair of Guntanks, working in conjunction with the IR mobile SAMs , switched on their radars in wait.

In the meantime the furball was swelling evermore. The JF-17s split as the F-16s blitzed them with AMRAAMs. The aircraft had been armed with their own AIM-120 copycats, PL-12s. A few aircraft, namely the ones Zack and Rein had targeted, fired two shots each at Ferret and Comet. The other jets spat chaff and put their agility to use to defend and defeat the missiles. Eric, quietly apologizing to his OAF counterparts, selected one of the 17s for an AIM-120. As he did, Mark's voice burst onto the channel.

"Shogun 208, break! Bandit on yer tail!"

Eric heard his RWR scream and he immediately recognized he was being tracked on radar. It was the EF2000 Mark had gone after, back to get him. Chaff in his wake, he ran for safety above, rolling and turning around to look for the bastard. He flew between a pair of JF-17s as the Ronin/Canis flight merged with the Shamlakis.

Major Al-Saddi left his two supporting fighters to their own devices while he boxed Sunny into a 1v1 fight. His IRIS-T foiled, He let Sunny pass, sacrificing speed to let the VF-3 pilot get out ahead of him and away so he could have room to follow and fire. He would regain energy later.

The Typhoons passed Dusty and Bait, making quick but inaccurate cannon runs, before turning into each other to foil any immediate attack. They each chose an Osean aimed for their tails, selected the more favorable IRIS-T for once they were behind the pilots.

Hearing the piercing shriek of the missile alerts in their headset, the Mirages broke into flights of two, dumping flares, and were careful to avoid the guntanks.

As he saw the Frogfoot pull off of its run, Sharky said quietly to himself, "Make that six..."  Hopping on the radio, he continued, "Roger that, Lemnir, get clear.  We're engaging." Rolling inverted, he scanned through the top of the canopy for a target, slaving the seeker head of one of his AIM-9Xs to his HMD.  When the growl of the seeker changed pitch to indicate it had locked on, he quickly made sure that the Yuktobanian Frogfoots were out of the way and fired.  "Basilisk 1, Fox 2."

As soon as the missile flew off the rail, Sharky rolled the jet back upright, setting up for a gun shot on another of the Rooivalks, firing off a burst of 30 rounds before pulling off, streaming flares.

He was followed by Showtime, Viper, and Red, who all repeated the routine of firing a single Sidewinder at a helo before pulling away.

Sunny decided to take the fight higher, standing the F-21 nearly on it's tail and climbing with afterburners active. Sunny soon reached his desired height a few thousand feet above the persistent fighter and rolled onto his back to get a better look at him.

Rosie actually mirrored this move somewhat as she noticed the two Typhoons maneuvering to get onto the tails of her two squadrons mate.

"Sunny 2 to 3, those fighters are turning to engage." Rosie called out in warning to Dusty.

"Right, Rosie take them. We'll drag em' around for so you can take a shot" The two F-21s increased speed to as fast they could go without burners, the third with Rosie took her F-21 into a climbing right turn so she could come down on the Typhoons.

Comet and Ferret along with the rest of the team broke hard, dumping chaff and moving to get away from the incoming PL-12 volley that was sent in response to their AIM-120 attack. Zack, unable to see if his blitz had any success against the hostile Thunders had to assume the worst and began to merge with the chaos. Ferret called to his squadmates in between grunts as he kept his maneuvers up, spotting the flash of two planes race in between the mess of fighters.

"Ferret to Pack, we're merging with bandits. Keep your Sidewinders and Gun at the ready. Keep your cool and a wide field of view. Everyone watch each others backs here. Be careful not to nail any friendlies."

"Hime, Roger. I have your six."

"Got it bossman." Alyosha said as he turned into the hostile formation, itching to get his first taste of close combat.

    "Comet, Wilco."

The Guntanks raised their weapons to catch the Mirages as they flew over, but weren't able to get the fighters in time to make up for the shortcomings of the Mistrals. However, there was a newer threat emerging.

"Bakal to all flights, it appears the enemy has scrambled its own strike aircraft to counter our ground forces. We count two groups of six aircraft, one of F-16Fs and one of Mirage 2000s. Group One is at 154, 200 miles, Angels 20. Group Two is at 133, 196 miles, Angels 19." The YAF controller radioed. They were heading straight for Basilisk, Broadsword, and Eagle.

Basilisk's attack had predictable results. The attack helicopters, with performance nowhere near that of a fighter, were plucked like the easy targets they were. The YAF strike aircraft followed up the first run by their Osean counterparts with attacks on the remaining two, saving the Yuktobanian ground elements under fire from further casualties. Now the main threat, at least besides the attackers, again became the formations of Shamlaki armor ahead. The Yuke T-90s kept their spread and kept mobile to beat back the Verusean-built Type 99s facing them.

In the meantime, the furball had settled into place. Eric pulled up as quickly as physics would allow him to shake the EF2000 while the pair of JF-17s he'd avoided seemed to be both fighting Canis and Tex. Mark, AIM-9s armed, got a glancing shot off at one of the JF-17s, but it arced above him as the missile was ahead of his jet. He tried to spot Eric and the Typhoon, but they'd gone off on their own. He was now alone; the Navy pilot turned after the 17 as it dove on Rein from above and loosed a close-range PL-8.

"Canis Four break into me, get clear of our path." He radioed, waiting for another Sidewinder shot.

The other JF-17 that'd been in the near miss came around to hit Zack and his wingwoman from behind, with two other jets supporting it in a bracketing maneuver. One of the bracketers noted Aly last minute and decided to throw things into further chaos by reversing and aiming for him, firing a PL-8 near head-on.

"Saber, yah still up?" Mark radioed.

"Yeah." Eric grunted as he and the Typhoon went into a rapidly slowing loop, Eric using the F-21's lower speed advantage to beat the Typhoon. It shot out below him, but the pilot used momentum to gain space.

Al-Saddi climbed to meet Sunny, intending to intercept him with an IRIS-T at the apex of his climb. He stayed below the Osean as long as he could until he was almost out of his firing envelope before letting go his second dogfight missile. In the meantime his two allies stayed on Dusty and Bait. Rosie was either an unknown factor to them or a secondary priority. Both pilots, unaware of easy shots and more concerned with kills, fired a single missile each at the two Thunderhawks.

On the ground, for the Osean 3rd Infantry, namely Cassin, they'd run into a stronger concentration of Shamlakis. He gulped as a round scratched the side of the M1, and Kolby responded with a sabot to the offending Type 99.

"Send a request up the pipeline for some support." He radioed, clenching his teeth. Some A-10s would be great right now...

It had never really occurred to him exactly what it'd be like facing this much enemy firepower. The war had come out of nowhere; he'd never expected to be part of a large force-on-force engagement. This kind of thing hadn't been seen since Yuktobania!

As Cassin was between his thoughts and fighting, they got support to deal with some Type 99s. A pair of hoped-for A-10s came in with bombs and gun to wreak havoc and kill what they could. The straight-winged tank hunters "gracefully" passed from the forward area of the armored force, fire in their wake.

Eagle flight, now armed with nothing but two MICA IRs on each plane, saw the enemy Mirage 2000s as the bigger threat. "Bakal, this is Eagle flight. We're turning en route to engage the enemy Mirages." he then continues to his squadron mates, "Alright Eagles. Time to take them out."

"Moineau, I copy. I'll follow your lead." Estelle calmly replied.

"Vautour, roger!" Magalie exclaimed as she formed up with both Irenee and Estelle.

"Balbuzard copies." Willard said as he formed up as well.

"Flares, break and evade!" called Riley. Turning hard, the Hornets popped chaff and flare

"Spiked! called Hannibal, "Guntanks, engaging!" rolling his Hornet level, he squeezed the trigger and fired a HARM. "Slapshot, Guntank!"

Riley had pulled around and Hacked had found the Crotales on the targeting pod. checking his grid, he punched it in and said, "I got the SAMs!" breaking hard, Riley put his nose on the SAM platforms hand dropped a CBU. "Pickle!"

As the call of more bandits came in over the radio, Shamu replied, "Roger that, Basilisk copies.  We'll take the F-16s."

Sharky pulled the Tomcat into a climb, intending to make up the range and altitude gap.  "Well here we go."  Accelerating to meet the incoming F-16Fs, it was several minutes before the PMCs were in Anaconda range.  Shamu, Millie, and Azure each locked up a pair of the F-16Fs.  Finally, the "HOT TRIG" light came on on Sharky's instrument panel.  Waiting a few more minutes to give the Anacondas a better intercept profile, Sharky finally fired.  "Basilisk 1, Fox 3, Fox 3."

The pair of AIM-154s streaked away from the right shoulder pylon, heading towards the F-16s.  They were followed shortly after by four more total from Basilisk 2 and 3.

Oh that was a bad move, Sunny. The Lieutenant Commander mentally scolded himself as he looked down to see the Typhoon climbing to meet him.

Probably trying for an IRIS shot, gotta at least hang in there some help arrives.

Sunny did the only thing he could do at this point and dove while still inverted, spitting countermeasures and hoping for the best.

Damn it, I'm back where I started.

Meanwhile, Rosie sounded the alarm as the two fighters trailing Dusty and Bait fired missiles.

"Sunny 3, 4, missile launch six o'clock!" Rosie before selecting an AIM-9X and targeting the left hand Typhoon, believing him to be the leader.

"Sunny 2, Fox Two" The Sidewinder launched and ate up the distance towards the left most Typhoon.

Dusty and Bait after hearing the call, made no remarks but broke into each other to confuse the tracking of the missiles.

"Son of a bitch! Bossman heat's off on one side. I'll try to contain his ass." Aly angrily growled as he dumped flares, rolled to get out of the way, turned hard, and reversed against the hostile fighter playing high velocity chicken with him. The projectile and fighter coming headlong at him had certainly given him a wake up call to what was at stake. Closing with the light fighter he cued the hostile with his JMCS and fired off an AIM-9X right for it's exhaust nozzle when the opportunity presented itself.

    "Matchstick, Fox Two!"

In the meantime Rein piled on the countermeasures as her own pursuer fired off a PL-8 at her, turning hard into Mark as she raced away from her attacker. "Cowboy, I am clear! Give him hell!" As she spoke, suddenly she heard a call for help from her flight lead.

"This is Ferret, I got a hostile on my six o'clock low that needs to be checked. Could use some help."

Hime in the meantime wracked her brain as she had a bandit coming at her from near headlong from below, did she go to help her beloved or did she race off to engage the forward attacker? The options she presented herself with left at one bandit on their six no matter how she sliced it. Suddenly her answer came.

"This is Comet, I have your six Ferret. Hime, deal with the trash to your twelve. Cowboy, make sure my six is clear I'm moving to support my lead."

Comet zoomed to a lower altitude to match her prey, closing the distance she radioed to Zack.

"Zachary, break off so I have a clear line."

"Copy Canis Four, he's all yours." Zack said as broke off to his left with Hime going right.

"Comet, Fox Two!" Rein called as she cued up the hostile JF-17 and fired from his six, IR guided missile burning in the night's sky.

"Bandits bandits bandits!" yelled Foxhound. Riley swung his head around and laid his JMCHS on the lead F-16F. Turning the aircraft to put the F-16s on the nose, he called "Fox 3!"

Foxhound sent off his own AMRAAM, aimed at the tail end charlie. Hannibal and Yak held their fire in case they needed a second volley.

The Mirages and Falcons had already detected the incoming fighters, but had initially relied on them being distracted and the defenses below. But now the UN fighters were after them and the Crotale and one of the Guntanks were out; they split their formations and a few even dumped their payloads. They pumped out chaff close to one another at first to clutter up the radar. The most vulnerable, however, were the lead jets. The ones further back were covered behind the wall of chaff and the other radar signatures of the jets forward of them.

Basilisk flight's shots, namely those from Sharky and his number two, hit their marks. The next to impact were the AMRAAMs from Riley and Foxhound. The other jets split, most heading for the deck and heading for the 3rd Infantry and 32nd Guards. The Mirages became the primary CAP, armed with Magic AAMs and cannon. They divided into three sections of two to meet Basilisk, Broadsword, and Eagle. Shogun flights two other jets began their own descent towards the F-16Fs to break them up while the MiGs from the YAF came from the east.

The Typhoon Rosie had fired on wasn't in a position to defeat the missile easily. The pilot had used his energy to get on his prey, and the fighter's attempt to break was not as quick as would be needed to defeat an incoming missile. As the fighter tried to roll downwards and speed up, the weapon impacted its left wing and separated the two.

Even in the face of flares, Al-Saddi launched his missile, relying on the IRIS-T's technology to beat Sunny's countermeasure. With no other logical recourse, he kept behind and above Sunny as he dove. Like the first night, he'd claim this one quick and brutally.

Eric's fight was taking him out of the furball between the JF-17s, his wingman and Canis. The Typhoon, now on the defensive, made a reverse to the right and tried to dive from that angle. Eric grunted and kept himself strong under the Gs as he followed him through the maneuver, trying to get a lock with his Sidewinder. He achieved it after as the Typhoon  tried to oull too tight and had to level out for a brief moment to regain energy and speed.

"Shogun 208, Fox 2." Eric radioed as he loosed his weapon.

The missile streaked down, catching the EF2000 as it was breaking left. The HE warhead detonated shy of its tailfin and cut several holes in the control surface. Eric pulled away from the Shamlaki fighter as it started to loose altitude and came around, shooting below the fight. In the distance he spotted flashes. Money's voice reached his ears.

"Be advised, Shogun 1-3 has VID on those Falcons. They're shooting towards the armor."

Eric armed his AIM-120s and pressed for a radar lock and fired his remaining two weapons while the flight's three and four chose two other F-16s. As he closed, Mark grunted out a "Gotcha Comet" to Rein as he pulled to get clear of what was to become an exploding JF-17. The Navy pilot would request his comp in drink later. He continued his dive below the fight and then pulled up. He two also spotted flashes as the F-16s were either trying to get off their payloads, locally adapted Storm Shadows, or looking to fight back against the marauding coalition. Mark let the OAF jets take their targets while he joined in fighting the F-16Fs. He spotted two such jets rolling fast and low along the desert. Mark armed his Sidewinders and closed.

"Shogun 205, Fox 2!" He shouted.

As for Canis, the clash was now brutal and close. Aly's target took the AIM-9 in the face, ripping apart before the F-16 in a dozen or so pieces. In the meantime Rein's target broke it's pursuit of Mao, shooting over the flight's number two and banking to the right, flares trailing off in its path.  The weapon kept after it, getting close enough to damage the fighter as it made an abrupt dive, spotting Mark as he made a hard charge at the two Falcons. He began to dive for the Thunderhawk.

Punching into a zoom climb to get above the Mirages, Sharky grunted, "Heads up, gents, we've got friends."  Sharky and Showtime took one Mirage, while Red and Viper tracked the other.  When he was in the proper position, Sharky rolled inverted and dove down behind his target, lining up a gun shot and triggering off a burst.

Viper did the same, with Red making sure their tail was clear.

"Mirages, incoming, 2 o' clock high!" called Hannibal. He rolled his Hornet and fired and AMRAAM at the trailing Mirage.

    "Fox 3"

Yak fired his own AMRAAM at the lead, as Riley and Foxhound maneuvered to get behind the Mirages.

"Get em!" yelled Chart from the back of Broadsword 2.

"Get back on those MLRS launchers!" yelled Hannibal.
