"Eagle, you're clear. Good work out there today. tankers are waiting inside Yuktobanian airspace to help." the A-50 radioed as the jets.

The controllers quickly went to watching over the Flankers as they scattered to take and hold the airspace against further Shamlaki attack. At least a few more RSAF pilots were coming up to challenge them. Rosie's downing was noted with a sober note. Hearing the tone in the Lieutenant Commander's voice, the officer responsible for VF-3's situational awareness said one thing.

"Understood Sunny Lead...stay sharp out there."

Al-Saddi, left with his guns, had naturally been forced to close the gap. Long enough to give the Sidewinder time to arm...not long enough to avoid the weapon. It met the Major's aircraft near head-on, and the frag warhead's load was shotgunned into the cockpit. Al-Saddi was spared much pain thanks to the location of the blow. He became the victim of an ancient code of the desert. One from the time of Hammurabi: an eye for an eye.

In the meantime 32nd Guards's tankers and motorized riflemen, fully engaged with the Shamlaki 91st Royal Combined Arms Division, found themselves supported by the sound of  sudden explosions. While the Foremost echeleons were mostly falling prey to the ground troops, The follow-on waves were taking the brunt of the missiles launched by Basilisk. Efforts were made by the AAA covering the tanks and IFVs, but little, if any, really effect was had. The rear formations, namely the support elements of the 91st, took the brunt of the CBUs.

"Broadsword, Bakal, the 3rd Infantry is reaching their phase line but report several batteries of AS-90s are harrassing them. We already have a flight of MiGs on them, support the attack. MiGs' callsign is Shushka 4. They report they've destroyed two of the five batteries." the AWACS radioed.

The 3rd infantry had effectively halted now to lick its wounds. They'd driven the 403rd Royal Armored Division into full retreat to the south, towards Highway 9.

As the four Tomcats headed back to the carrier, Shamu said solemnly, "Well, looks like there's gonna be one fewer jet in this recovery..."

    "Yeah."

"You think they're gonna run CSAR?"

Sharky shrugged, "I mean it would be good, yeah, but I don't know what the point would be.  There was no chute, right?  And at this rate the armor's gonna be at her position by then.  So sending the SOAR to do it would be redundant."

"Yeah you have a point there."

Sunny watched in grim satisfaction as the Sidewinder struck true and swatted the Typhoon from the sky.

"That was for Rosie. . ." Sunny muttered almost inaudibly to himself. Then he heard the reply from the AWACS and remembered he still had pilots he needed to get home.

"Sunny lead to Three, what's you location?"

He got a reply shortly thereafter from Dusty, having heard little from him in several minutes, it was a little encouraging.

"Three here, we chased off that last one and are coming to you. Where's Two?" Dusty questioned.

". . . Two is down, no chute."

    ". . . . Roger, forming on you"

The division, or what was left of it was finally back together.

Sunny noticed his fuel was close to Bingo (having gone into burner more times than really necessary) and decided to call it, checking with the others and seeing the situation was near the same.

"Sunny lead to Bakal, flight is reporting near Bingo Fuel, requesting vector to tanker"

"Roger Bakal, Broadsword is engaging targets" said Hacker.

Switching to Shuskha 4's freq, Hacker said, "Shushka 4 this is Broadsword 1, we are standing by to support. What battery do you need us to hit?"

In the back of Broadsword Two, Chart scanned the ground for targets. Her pod picked up one of the batteries, and lased the target in preparation.

"Understood Sunny Flight, you are cleared to proceed home." the A-50 radioed.

From his own Thunderhawk, Eric had heard the news, too. Though separate squadrons, VF-138 and VF-3 shared a good partnership, like a pair of brothers almost. He keyed up his mike.

"Sunny Lead, Shogin Lead, I'd say she was one of the best pilots I've seen fly." He remarked.

Further from the solem tones of Rosie's fate, the MiGs attacking the AS-90s were put in contact with the Marine Hornets. Shushka Lead was quick to reply.

"Broadsword, Shushka Lead has destroyed the first and second batteries, attacking the third. The fourth and fifth are near a wadi 26 kilometers south of the phase line the 3rd Infantry is aiming to reach. Standby for map reference." the YAF pilot said as his cluster ordinance dropped from his plane. He relayed the location as quickly as he could, lacking the proper datalink to simply send it to the Oseans.

"Be advised, they have at least two Croatales per battery. Attack from high altitude if you can." He added, practicing what he preached as he flew.

"Roger, Bakal. Sunny Flight RTB" Sunny said tonelessly and led his two remaining wingmen on a heading back to the Excalibur.

The message from Saber brought back memories of the young nugget he had taken under his wing.

"Thanks Shogun lead. She really was one of our best. She'd appreciate the compliment, I'm sure."

With that, the Lieutenant Commander at this point just wanted to get out of here.

God how am I going to explain this to her parents?

"Roger Bakal, engaging. 3 and 4, engage the southernmost battery. 1 and 2 will engage the others. Climb and pickle."

"Roger that!" responded Hannibal. The Hornets lit their burner and climbed above the Crotale's range. Broadsword 1 and 2 arrived over their targets first, and Chart lased the batteries while Lee lased the SAMs. The last of the CBUs fell from the aircraft and a steel hail slammed into the batteries. 3 and 4 did the same.

"Broadsword flight is Winchester." radioed Riley.

Zack and the rest of his flight got word of Sunny's loss as they flew alongside Shogun's Thunderhawks, they had seen Rosie and her flight lead during the beach party and despite not getting to know the pair very well; their hearts sunk.

"Zack, We didn't know her well...but someone should say something." Mao spoke, exhaling heavily.

Zack called to Sunny and the remainder of his flight, "Canis Lead, Sunny Lead. you have my condolences. I'm sure she was one hell of a pilot..."

Rein and Aly simply remained silent as their aircraft continued flying across the darkened skies of Shamlak. Zack glanced down at his fuel level and decided to call fuel for the rest of his Pack.

    "Ferret to Pack, call fuel."

"Hime here. Close to Bingo fuel."

"Matchstick, getting low here. Rather not fly home on fumes Zack."

    "Comet, approaching bingo fuel Ferret."

Then then switched channels to contact Bakal. "Canis Lead to Bakal approaching Bingo fuel. Request vector to tanker."

The altitude at which Broadsword had made its attack meant that the Shamlakis manning the guns had only heard the low, almost whispering, roar of the fighter-bombers as they passed over. They were certainly too high for the close-range, low-altitude Crotales. In the night, even with goggles, they couldn't see anything until explosions started. Most of the crews had been acting as usual, relying on the SAMs to keep away the attacking Yuke MiGs. some crew, mostly ammo handlers, had taken up cover with nothing to do at the moment. They were sparred for the most part, left to watch the AS-90s burn. VMFA-410 was cleared to go home.

"Canis, we've got two tankers on heading 260 waiting. You are cleared to RTB." the A-50 said in the meantime. At the same time, a fresh flight from VF-138, led by Fast Eddie, was streaking eastwards to hold the line.

"Shogun, this is Boxeur Lead, we are here to relieve you."

Eric looked around as his F-21s circled about. Good, they were running low on fuel, at this point they'd have to get to the tanker quickly.

"Roger that Boxeur, station's all yours." He said to the lead pilot of a flight of REAF Rafales.

Eric called for the F-21s to follow him, heading down the same path as Zack and his band. He didn't have much to say at the moment; the fatigue of post-combat was starting to nip at him. As he passed by the F-16s, still waiting while Bakal handed out its clearance, he rocked his wings. A little wave to keep up the spirits from one warrior to another. The pilot looked down at his picture of Misaki and smiled. At least she was always happy, even when they were coming out of a rather sobered-up mission.

Below, the men of Bravo Company sat along the new front line, resting and watching as the M88s tended to the two disabled tracks in Cassin's paltoon. Despite better judgment, Cassin stood up in his commander's cupola, watching the vast countryside of Shamlak. His crew had expended a notable amount of the ammo, but they weren't due to be refueled just yet.

    "Yo Cassy."

He looked over as Austin was climbing up the side of his tank. The man held up one of those cans of coffee that you drank cold.

"Stay awake, man." He said as Cassin accepted it.

"Tis the Army way." He shrugged to Callie.

Austin got all the way onto the turret and looked up as a flight of four A-10s flew over, oddly enough near a flight of two Su-34s.

"I...never thought I'd see that kind of thing." He remarked.

"Same here, then again I never thought I'd be here to fight this war." Cassin added. He looked back down at the open ground. About a dozen or so wrecks of Shamlaki tanks remained...and he spotted something. Men walking towards them.

"Heads up! Footmobiles at our twelve!" He shouted, manning his M2 as he finished shouting.

Austin dropped down on the turret and peered across the desert at the figures as they seemed to lumber towards the tanks and IFVs of 3rd Infantry. Cassin handed him his NVGs so he could see better.

"Pass me targets, Kolby ready the Coax!" Cassin instructed.

"Hold up...they have their hands raised. They ain't come to fight." Austin observed after a minute.

Shouts to confirm that the men where surrendering echoed down the line and across the radio. Dismounted infantry were sent to meet the Shamlakis coming into the arms of the Oseans. many of them had stripped down to all but their fatigues in hopes of showing they were harmless. From Cassin's tank, he and Austin watched as the beaten men slowly moved and sat down or lay on the ground to be received. Their equipment, some of it still burning or cooking off ammo, lit their sad end.

    MISSION NINE COMPLETE

Debrief: About an hour ago, Osean and Yuktobanian forward elements in the 3rd Infantry and 32nd Guards reported they'd established fighting positions at their first phase lines inside Shamlak. They plan to press the attack again when they've been resupplied proper. Excellent work.

Press Release, Kedhani Media (March 29, 2018): In its conyiuing quest to enslave those who do not obey its whims, the UN today ordered more troops into our new ally, Shamlak. This move only highlights the fact that the UN forces are suffering such high casualties they must commit all forces. His Holiness reminds the nation of his reward for slain UN murderers! They are close to breaking!

Press Release, Shamlaki Media (March 29, 2018): Today a joint Osean-Yuktobanian ground force invaded sovereign Shamlaki territory. King Ah-Fais is calling upon the people in the region to resist the invasion alongside the military. He urges the preservation of our nation and our freedom to exist; the invading armies must not be allowed to subjugate us with dishonorable tactics. King Ah-Fais has even begun to reach out to political overtures from Erusea and Verusea, both of whom have declared they intend to take "independent steps to contain this runaway conquest".

Press Release, Erusean Media (March 29, 2018): In the face of continued resistance by members of the UN coalition to seek a peaceful solution, the Erusean Federal Parliament today declared that the UN has a deadline of one week to halt its forces and begin talks on peace. It went on to say that it hoped to ease the war for the sake of the people of Shamlak and Kedhan, citing that in that week General Sawari would be wise to surrender and face trial. To back this up, Erusean Naval forces have started to leave their ports, and the Erusean 88th Airmobile Brigade has been announced to be under preparations to deploy for peacekeeping operations. The Erusean government has made promises it will only act once the deadline has passed.

Press Release, Verusean Media (March 29, 2018): Due to growing hostilities on our border, The Party Council has seen it fit to reveal to the public the measures that have been taken in the past days to ensure the situation in Shamlak and Kedhan will not threaten the Peoples' Republic. Our Western Forces are mobilizing as we speak, and the Party Council has authorized the release of plans to intervene in the situation if need-be. While there are no sure signs the UN intends to use this "peacekeeping mission" as an excuse to threaten our great nation, citizens are advised to remain wary.

    Above OFS Excalibur

Eric looked out of his cockpit at both wings, each loaded with an AGM-88E and an AMRAAM. Today, due to the presence of urban terrain, he would be armed with JDAMs instead of CBUs. Mark was, being one of the better Iron Hand fliers, the flight lead for the fourship. They would be backed by two EA-18Gs as well, and covered by the ever-familiar fourship from the REAF's 4th FS. Basilisk would be the center of the strike, aimed at Kedhani's State Media HQ. Though they couldn't take out every substation across the board, it felt good to shut up the main source of all those annoying and inflated reports on the UN and the war. Though not a mud mover, Eric wouldn't have minded taking the honor of destroying the place.

He looked down at his picture of Misaki as he always did and stuck close to his lead on the right. The flight was spread out in two pairs, standard way of doing it, each with a Growler in trail. In the back of his mind, Eric was sizing up what was popularly being called the "Verusea Factor". The Verusean Peoples Air Defense Force (Verusean Peoples Air Force/VPAF for short), was big but had little experience. In fact they were sometimes jokingly labeled as more suicidal than brave. Their J-10 had already shown its hand, and the J-11 was just a different flavor of Su-27. The way Eric saw it numbers was the biggest problem.

"Eagle Lead, this is Shogun Lead, we're approaching RP. Y'all closing?" Mark asked.

Mark was also thinking. He'd been filling his mind often with Ekaterina, just like Eric did with Misaki. Ekaterina was showing more and more signs she was starting to lose her cool, especially with the new developments. He wanted to do more than say things to his stressed Yuktobanian, but she was still far way. Maybe he'd fake trouble one day and divert to that neck of the woods...Then again that would be farther than the boat...Mark shook his head and got back to thinking combat.

    April 3, 2018 (Local Time: 0807)
    Ah-Alawaki, Kedhan

The morning was already off to a busy start...

    "Contact! Two o' clock!"

As the MLAV's ramp dropped and its Bushmaster chuffed away, James followed Izzy out the back of the AAV and into the open street. The determined cracks from Kedani rifles and LMGs. The lead MLAV burned as the result of a well-aimed RPG round. James took cover near a bus that'd been left to rot while the citizens of the city fled and aimed his weapon up. He spotted a muzzle flash in a window and fired twice. Spotting another he fired on that one, too.

The Marine pressed harder against his cover as he tried to adjust from the few days of fighting along the highway and in the countryside to skyscrapers and streets. He looked down the street towards their objective, where the Kedhani scientists were supposed to be. Real smart, sending in grunts to do this, he thought sourly. Real smart. The Marine got a good bead on one of the shooters and was able to assume he dropped him. At this point Jose had the LSAT going with accurate fire and Izzy had deployed smoke. Not to say some air support wouldn't be nice...

Saluting his crew chief, Riley began to preform his walk-around of "Speed Limit" as he and Lee had come to call it. Hacker himself had climbed into the rear seat and began to get situated, dialing in the right freqs and other systems. Finishing his check, Riley climbed into the front seat and pulled on his helmet. Hooking in his oxygen mask, he began to strap in,. After completing that, he started the aircraft. The engines whined to life and he lowered the JHMCS visor. "Broadsword 1-1 to flight, check in."

    "2"

    "3"

    "4"

"Alright, let's roll ladies and gents." said Riley, lowering the canopy, the aircraft rolled forward and began their taxi to the active.

"Oh yeah, Riley, I know it's been a while, but don't get shot down again." said Hannibal.

"You know I do hold your promotion and career in my hands, right Elephant?"

    "Yessir!"

Chart giggled in the back of 1-2, and said, "Hannibal, is bad decision making part of your DNA?"

Turning onto the active, the first pair of Hornets briefly stopped, then went full burner and took off, followed shortly by the other set.

Zack hummed the tune of Metallica's "Battery" to himself as he and his comrades walked out to their aircraft lined up on the tarmac, he was always fond of the S&M version of the song and began to imagine the string section reaching it's highs with Kirk Hammett's guitar furiously belting notes out. Of course his thoughts weren't straying from the objective at hand, which felt more like an order for assassination than interception to him. But it wasn't his place to object, orders were orders and HQ could hash out the aftermath later. Mao in the meantime kept close, shaking down her gear and glancing over at her beloved as his flat expression changed to a smile, catching her out of the corner of his eye. The pale skinned girl's thoughts were of the Kedhani's close friends, the Verusans. Hopefully the outcome of today's battle could possibly slow or prevent Verusan intervention.

"You've never liked onions?" Alyosha asked Rein as they walked several steps behind Zack and Mao.

"Never did, never will." Rein replied as she adjusted her sunglasses, the lenses glaring in the early morning light.

"Won't even try onion rings? I mean you haven't lived til you tried these nacho cheese covered ones back in Zack's hometown. Handmade too. Man...chow hall food makes me miss real food..."

Rein snorted, "Of course not! What makes you think frying onions and slathering them in cheese will change my opinion?"

Mao interjected, "Faster we get this job done, the quicker you can get fat and be a lech Aly."

"Well get a move on then! I'm STARVING." Alyosha fired back.

"Alright; this is it." Zack said as he stopped short of the aircraft. "Our job is really straightforward, keep Ekna's chief biochemical eggheads from fleeing the city. We're only to cut off their path of retreat so the Jarheads can catch up but if shit hits the fan, we may have to play aerial assassin."

"Cute." Aly snarked, "What about our friends from Verusa?"

"Intervention is likely, however we cut the head off the snake here it will most likely deter Verusa from taking any further action." Mao replied.

"Mao is right. Quicker this is done. The better our chances of halting a confrontation with Verusa and dragging this bullshit out any further than it needs to be."

"Gotta watch our backs too. Hear the Keds got a fresh order of Flankers and Dragons too." Rein chimed in.

Zack nodded, "Yes. But leave those to CAP and only get engaged with fighters if they pose a direct threat. Let's mount up and get moving."

    Some time later... (807 Local)

The four F-16's of Canis flight screamed through the skies, approaching their waypoint this time loaded down with six Brimstones, two AIM-9X a piece, and two AIM-120D AMRAAM's. Their additional kit consisted of a SNIPER XR, ALQ-184 on the centerline station, and two 300 Gallon drop tanks inboard.

"Ahh, it's like sliding into an old couch."

Sharky rolled his eyes at Shamu.  "Oh please.  You make it sound like you haven't flown a Mud Hen in years."

Checking the two GBU-31(V)4s hanging from the CFT pylons, Shamu shrugged and said, "Eh, feels that way."

With their preflight checks completed, the two scrambled up the boarding ladders into the cockpit, closing the canopy and starting engines.  As they taxied on towards the runway they were joined by the rest of the formation, with Red reiterating for the twentieth time since the briefing how glad he was to be back in Strike Eagles.

The four PMC F-15Es took off without incident, setting course for their rendezvous with Shogun off the coast of Kedhan.  In contrast with the rest of the war, this morning the Basilisk jets were rather lightly loaded, carrying only a pair of GBU-31s, 2 AIM-9Xs, and 2 AIM-154s in the case of Basilisks 1 and 3, and 2 AIM-9Xs and 6 AIM-154s in the case of 2 and 4, the rest of their pylons laden with fuel.  This meant that the PMC pilots could make it to their target and back without having to stop to refuel, which was the main reason they were using Strike Eagles instead of the Quickstrikes they had been using for the rest of the war, a fact that Red took the opportunity to mention smugly.

Once they were leveled off at their cruising altitude, Sharky asked Shamu, "So you and Chart have fun the other day?"

"Yeah.  Felt good to see her again.  Especially after all those days on the boat."

Sharky said smugly, "What is this I hear?  Might the infamous Samya Suara actually be considering settling down?  Will the boomerang girls of the world be forced to lament their fate and un-teased bosoms?"

"Oh, shut up, you.  This hasn't even gone on long enough for me to tell where the hell it's going."

"True, but hell, it's a start, bud."

"Yeah, so it is.  But then again knowing me, this may all just be a factor of proximity and is gonna fall apart the moment we all go back home."

Sharky frowned.  "Shams, you can't think like that.  It never works in the long run."

    "Just saying."

"As someone who spends entirely too much time thinking like that, trust me.  It doesn't help."

"Yeah, alright."  Changing the subject, Shamu said, "Man I'm just glad we can finally shut those shitheads up."

"I'm just glad they're letting US drop the bombs."

"Hehe, you got that right.  Plus it lets us fly a Mudhen again."

Sharky chuckled, "So you DID miss this old bird after all," referring to the fact that the jet they were currently flying was the second one they had flown in combat, back during the war in 2015.

"Like I said.  Like sliding into an old couch."

"Well, an old couch with new upholstery, and stuffing, and cushions..."

"Yeah, yeah, you get the point."

Sharky simply grinned.  "So how long we got to the rendezvous?"

"About two hours at present speed."

"Lovely."  With that, Sharky kicked on the autopilot and sat back in his seat as the 4 F-15Es continued resolutely over the ocean towards their rendezvous with their SEAD escort.

    Two Hours Later, 0830 Local

As the Basilisks approached the rendezvous point, Shamu radioed, "Marshall, Basilisk flight of four checking in, over."

"You sure you're up for this Sunny, I can have someone else lead this one. It's just an Iron Hand." Sunny's CO looked him dead in the blond pilot's eye as she tried to gauge the readiness of her Operations Officer.

Rosie's death had a massive impact on the Lieutenant Commander. There was at least a chance Weasel was still alive, but Rosie was gone and everyone knew it. And it had been on his watch.

The letter he had written had been in standard format expressing his regrets, but he knew it would be no consolation whatsoever.

Sunny met his Skipper's gaze for a moment, barely restraining the urge to look away. How could he look himself in the mirror if he did not practice the same motto's he had tried to impart to the late Sapin-Osean.

"No Skipper, I'm solid. I can handle it"

The red headed woman in her late thirties stared impassively for a moment then conceded.

    "Alright then, Sunny you're up."

That little conversation had been less than an hour ago, and Sunny wished he could say he felt as confident as he sounded back on the ship.

But he was in it now and all he could do now is lead.

Sunny's respect for his air wing commander back in 2010 only grew in retrospect.

Sunny watched as the last of his flight of four joined up. Replacing Rosie was a somewhat brash young Lieutenant named James A. Chase. With a callsign of "Tail" either gained through dogfighting prowess or womanizing, it was hard to tell honestly, Chase was at least able to be counted on in a fight.

Which is all Sunny could ask for. Dusty and Bait made up the second section.

Each Thunderhawk as armed with a pair of AIM-9X Sidewinders for self defense, but their primary armament for this mission were two AGM-88E  each with the express purpose of suppressing the very likely intense AAA defenses. Rounding out the loadout were four GBU-38s hanging off each F-21's fuselage.

The mission could either be a cake walk or a nightmare. But that wasn't what was being commented on.

"God the Jarheads defending and the Chair Force bombing, this outta be one to remember" Tail snarked as the four Thunderhawks headed inland to link up with the rest of the package.

"Hey now these guys are actually pretty good, poor choice in service choices aside" Dusty added somewhat helpfully.

Sunny chuckled to himself slightly. Having guys like these around helped.

"Alright guys, play nice. We're kinda relying on them right now. Sunny lead to Marshall, we're en route to target, can you get in contact with Canis and Crusader flight?"

"This is Eagle flight. We're now on station, armed with four MICA RFs and two MICA IRs. We should be at your seven o'clock." Irenee replied to Mark as the four Mirages formed up on the F-21s and F-15Es. Each Mirage armed for air-to-air combat.

Much like Eric, the members of Eagle flight have become concerned about the Veruseans replenishing the Kedhan and Shamlaki aerial forces. The four were even concerned about the possibility of Verusean pilots behind the controls of some of them. 'Honchos' as the Oseans referred to the concept as. Estelle and Magalie were having just as hard of concentration at the moment, worried about Estelle in Magalie's case and worried about both Irenee and Magalie in Estelle's case. Irenee too was feeling the effects. He was worried about his squadron mates, Estelle most notably.

"How much do you want to bet that this mission will succeed?" Estelle asked.

"None. I'd rather not jinx it." Willard replied rather grimly.

"You shouldn't be on edge so much, you know?" Magalie responded.

"He's right, though. We can't let ourselves end up like VF-3's number two." Irenee replied, reminding the rest of them of when they heard of Rosie's fate. Willard, in private, took her fate the worst out of the four of them. During the beach party, Willard, upon seeing Rosie, had developed a crush on her. But fate had intervened. However, Willard is able to hide his sadness, not because he's heartless, but because he never felt such anguish before.

"Marshall copies all, Basilisk, Eagle and Shogun are pressing to clear you a route. Proceed to IP at your discretion."

"Well well, the merc boys are here. Okay Shogun make it em count." Mark commented.

The flight went to a shallow wedge spread out over several miles, supported by two E/A-18Gs from VAQ-114. Surprsingly the sources coming from around the city, the far side namely, were from SA-20s. It was probably safe to assume that Ah-Alawaki's western defenses had already been hit. Mark looked back one last time at their escorting Mirages, and then looked forward.

"Eagle, Shogun 208 I've got bandits due east...sending you datalink now." Eric spoke up as he was about to select his radar to air-to-ground. A flight of four J-11s was passed off to the Emmerains. AWACS took over.

"Roger that 208. Eagle Lead, Marshall, we confirm bandits at 085, 200 miles, Angels 23. Go get em."

In the meantime the Gargoyles bellow were busy targetting the incoming aircraft to soften them up for the CAPs, which were much more than just four Flanker Plus's. There were two more CAPs of the same jet, with one being deployed to meet Broadsword and the third positioning itself to hold the center.

Mark got hits on his radar from the radars below, which he was feeding to his "Super HARMs" for his first shots. The Growlers, both those with him and the two with Sunny's flight, did what they did best and jammed.

    "Shoguns, break formation!" He drawled.

Eric snapped away from his wingman as an SA-20 launched twice at him, trailing chaff. He watched his display as it tried to get him the angles he needed, but he had to be at least somewhat upright to let the AGM-88 drop. In the meantime Mark had a radar, actually one atop a building. He guessed they had a few extras set up just to outnumber the HARMs...not if he could help it.

    "Shogun 205, Magnum!" Mark called.

Unlike many days, or nights, the flashes of weapons were more subdued against the blazing sun. As a battery several miles south of the city limits launched on Sunny and his flight, the only indication they had were the plumes of smoke from the TELs.

Meanwhile inside the city, James and his compatriots had settled into the predicament of becoming pinned down. One of the hit MLAVs had wounded men inside, but those who could fight had been forced to stick to buildings and other pieces of cover to the right of the building. James had spent the last few minutes dueling with some Kedhani infantryman with an LMG across the street near a fountain outside a bank. the JTAC was screaming over the radio for CAS. For all they knew the Ekna scientists had already fled. A call came out over the net.

"Canis, this is Marshall. We've got some Marines, callsign Longrifle, pinned enroute to your HVIs. We've got Cobras inbound to help em, but they won't get their fast enough. We're authorizing you to make two passes in support, how copy?"

"Roger, Marshall, we're engaging." Irenee replied to the Osean AWACS. "Alright Eagles, lets get to work."

The four Mirages turned to their assigned heading and began their climb to twenty-three thousand feet.

Over Al-Alawaki, Kedhan, 22,000 feet. Level.

The four F-16's after checking in and arriving at their designated station received a support request from the AWACS. Zack quickly replied, "Solid copy Marshal, pushing to support Longrifle." Ferret then contacted the the JTAC embedded with the Marines on the ground.

"Longrifle, this is Canis flight of four F-16 approaching your position and ready for tasking. What's your status?"

While awaiting the ground forces response, Zack checked his weapons and called to his wingmen.

"Pack, fan out and prepare to launch on Longrifle's go."

"Hime copies, hopefully the eggheads haven't given them the slip." the Shimoji pilot said as she adjusted her current position.

"At the rate they're going to without us or those Cobras." Zack replied as the four spread out to pick their targets for a Brimstone shot.

Shamu radioed, "Copy that, Marshall.  We'll let the SEAD boys have a little more fun.  Basilisk is holding at this time."

Tail squinted as something caught his eye near the outskirts of the city, jerking awake at the sight.

The warning through his headset a millisecond later only confirmed.

"SAM launch, SAM launch!" He called over the radio.

Sunny was jerked out of his preparations to launch his HARM at the dual warning, and called for the flight to evade.

Each pair of Thunderhawks turned into one another dropping chaff and flares to evade and throw off the tracking.

The Hornets of Broadsword 1-1 circled over the package in a wide orbit.

"Broadsword 1-1 on station" said Hacker.

Riley monitored his radar, only the strikers appeared to be flying.

"Seems like no one wants to play with us." said Hannibal.

"I take that as a good sign." replied Raptor, glancing through his canopy.

"Roger that Basilisk, we'll feed you any updates as they come..."

The J-11s split formation, going to wall, to meet the incoming Mirages. As soon as they did two broke off and went low, snaking to the left and then coming back right to hit the Emmerians' flank. the pair going head-to-head each fired two PL-12 missiles. The Verusean fourship leader wanted as little extra weight when he got close. This would be the first time Verusean pilots would fight any Western air force in over half a century.

In the meantime the group after Broadsword split into four, with two coming from above and one from each flank. The flanking J-11s unleashed a pair of PL-12s each aimed at Broadswords 2 and 4.

Mark didn't like this as he dumped chaff and tried to keep Sunny's flight in mind. Eric was even less enthused about having to fly under the growing air-to-air action. It was less pride and more worry that one of the Flankers would take an interest in the SEAD birds. Mark kept his eyes moving in all directions as he watched for bandits and the SA-20s that seemed to be filing up the sky today.

Eric watched as one of the two missiles fired at him passed on, closer than he wanted. It exploded behind, close enough to feel the shock. The pilot maneuvered again and tried to get a lock as the second missile was coming. The chaff and flares from Sunny flight was helping as the move by Shogun was helping.

On the ground, the JTAC heard Canis. He plugged his open ear as a shot grazed the concrete a few feet above his head.

"Canis we're taking a lot of fire from an office building about a block forward of us. Can't reach our wounded nearby. Target's about 120 meters from forward MLAV, look for the three-story, crescent-shaped building. Can't laze but I'm hitting my IR strobe." He radioed. The man activated the device as he sighed off.

Nearby James kept an eye out while Izzy was loading a round into his M320. The fellow Marine snapped the chamber closed and raised the tube so the 40mm weapon would land its round in the middle of the street. He sent a smoke grendae out to cover the other Marines. Another grenadier did the same. James hefted himself up and ran across the street to get out of the Kedhanis' immediate field of fire. Jose kept up his fire in bursts, aiming for likely places shooters would be. He nailed a guy with an RPG in his grip among three riflemen.

"Longrifle, Longrifle, this is Copperhead, we're approaching from the highway. ETA three minutes. UAV's showing a platoon of T-90s in a square near target building. Want us to get em?"

"Longrifle Actual here, go ahead, Copperhead." the platoon leader said.

"Bandits, break!" called Hannibal, violently jinking while firing off flares and chaff. Broadsword 4 followed suite and the flight split. Riley selected his AIM-120s and locked up the lead J-11.

"Fox 3! Fox 3!" called Riley.

3 and 4 engaged the left-hand J-11, but didn't notice the one on the right. Hannibal did, and yanked his Hornet into a hard right break.

"Fox 3!" he called, loosing two of his own missiles.

"Broadsword 3, Fox 3!" called Yak.

"Loud and clear Longrifle, I see your strobe. Keep your head down." Zack replied as he spotted the target building through the SNIPER's feed.

    "Hime, you painting?"

"Target's lit and leveled at visible muzzle flashes."

Zack depressed the trigger on his stick, letting a Brimstone fly off the wing and follow Hime's beam.

    "Ferret Rifle!"

Rein and Alyosha repeated the same process with Matchstick lasing the target.

    "Three is lasing"

    "Comet, Rifle One!"

The Usean made AGM's screamed away from their mother aircraft and towards their final destination as the battle raged in the streets below.

Hearing the missile warnings in their headsets, the four Mirage pilots broke into flights of two; Irenee and Willard in one pair, and Estelle and Magalie in the other pair, in an effort to evade the PL-12s.

The two pairs turned to the direction of the Verusean J-11s, and continued to close the distance.
