After clearing the first floor, Genghis beckoned to Preacher, gesturing at the door leading up to the tower.

Preacher nodded, pulling out a small quadrotor drone.  Stacking up, Genghis opened the door, allowing Preacher to launch the drone and get an idea of what awaited them using the quadrotor's thermal camera.  After taking a quick peek, he retrieved the drone, tapping Genghis on the shoulder.

    'What do we got?"

"Looks like 4 guys covering the stairwell.  They're dug in pretty good.  Ladder leading up to what I assume is the control tower is behind 'em."

Genghis frowned for a moment. "Hmmm...  Okay.  Quad, then smoke, then flash.  You, me, Dingo push up, Voodoo and Tick cover."

"Check."  Preacher launched the quadrotor again, flying it up to the top of the stairs.  Maneuvering it into the middle of the guards' formation, he detonated the half pound blast fragmentation charge affixed to the bottom of the drone.

As the charge went off, Dingo and Genghis immediately tossed a pair of smoke grenades into the stairwell, allowing Voodoo to pop in and fire off a pair of flashbang grenades followed by a pair of fragmentation grenades out of his M32.

Titan and his assistant scrambled to a new position and loaded an AT. "Backblast area clear!" The round thumped from the launcher. The other SEALs had ducked for cover as quickly as possible. Halo got to a new position and began engaging the 12 stunned troopers on the airport.

The first time the Quad had peeked out, the guards along the way up had only caught it briefly, long enough to realize what was up but not long enough to realize what was happening. The second time it came they opened fire on the thing and swatted it down. The introduction of flashbangs had more mixed results. With it being night, none of the men had been wearing any kind of eye protection, but being security on an airfield, all of them wore ear protection. The best the could do was look away and start shooting blind. One man with a PKP was able to get the most accurate fire out, while his comrade dared to stand up after the initial explosion and bring his KH2002's grenade launcher to bear. In response to the M32 rounds that badly wounded the bottom-most man and lightly beat up the second, he fired one HE round at the entrance to the tower and dropped before anything else to fire the rifle.

The drive cut to the right at the sight of the Gustav, avoiding its round narrowly. The turret kept on the SEALs, giving the AT gunners several 30mm rounds as its driver sped up and cut back towards them. As the dust cleared, Halo would find his bullets were impacting the rubble created by the initial onslaught. The 12 men inside had gathered weapons, at least, and were leaving the space for the hall out of the direct line of fire to finish final preparations.

In the meantime Knight's team was still pinned, a few grazed, and trying to at least get a clearer shot at the MiGs. The Kedhanis had funneled most of the remaining security detachment into guarding those jets until a relief force, boasting BMPs and T-90s, could arrive. The Lieutenant decided to start pushing things in his favor. He had Teiji moving into a more favorable position, and Toby was the main element to provide return fire to the Kedhanis. He would lead three other men around the hangar to flank. He moved, his men in tow, and came upon one group of four Kedhani guards. Knight stuck to a corner and fired a burst into them while Dodo and Screwball fired on the move. It got them kills, but the fire from the larger force again pinned them down.

They really needed air support though, which Roadkill was working on. He talked back and forth with an AWACS, which was coordinating with a JSTARS. the 101st Airborne was on the way, and besides the DAPs, they had at least one flight of A-10s inbound. There was, however, a problem. The airfield had six MiGs on the ground, with the other six airborne. Four had gone to challenge the F-22s escorting the Osean tank busters; the other two were coming back to defend the airfield.

Jester caught the BTR in his sites, and fired a quick succession of rounds at it. The Gustav team had already displaced, and fired another AT round at the BTR. Bolt engaged the position of the twelve men, laying down heavy fire. Halo cursed, reloaded and fire at the escapees again. Jester had also turned his attention to the men, and fired off his launcher again. The Gustav unit had moved again, ducking away from the BTR.

Voodoo had popped back into cover after firing his initial barrage.  Fortunately, the thick concrete walls of the stairwell protected the members of Triton from the retaliatory grenade.  As the reverberation from the detonation subsided, Voodoo yelled, "Boss, there's not a whole lot we can do from here!"

Genghis nodded, before keying his radio.  "Odin, can you see these guys on backscatter?  Should be four.  About halfway up the tower.  See if you can hit them with the fifty."

Odin pulled out the M107, flipping open the lens covers on the backscatter optic mounted to the top rail.  "Okay, I got them, boss.  But I'm not sure the rounds are gonna penetrate."

"Well, give it a shot.  If it doesn't work we'll call Stalker.  Try and get the second one from the top first.  Fucker's got a 40 mike mike."

"Check."  Odin set his sights on the ghostly outline produced by the x-ray scope, radioing, "I'm set."

    "Engage when ready."

"Roger that."  Odin squeezed the trigger, the big rifle booming as it sent a round flying towards the erstwhile grenadier.

The survivors were safe from the SEALs from now, inside and away from any open windows, taking cover within a service stairwell inside the building, they formulated a plan while the BTR driver continued to embody his inner Mad Max. Instead of trying to scatter the SEALs by shooting in their general direction, the APC's weapon was brought to bear directly on the SEALs, namely the Gustav team that'd been running around. As the driver cut again to dodge the round, it managed to strike near the back of the APC. The BTR-80 slowed, but kept up its fire, employing its smoke launchers to cover itself.

A small portion of the wall behind the grenadier exploded. It wasn't how Hollywood had shown it with Bill Paxton in Navy SEALs, but it was enough that the man was thrown forward and down the stairs, dead before his body thumped to the ground. His rifle was next to him. Devoid of their grenade launcher, the badly wounded man made himself useful by lobbing a cooked fragmentation grenade into the hall. Under the cover of the explosive, the second highest rifleman retreated upwards so he'd be closer to his comrade with the LMG.

Crusher managed to get enough time to breathe, and put two M32 rounds near one of the more heavily manned Kedhani positions. Deciding the A-10s could get the grounded MiGs, Knight ordered that any remaining AT4s be used to break the deadlock. His flanking team had broken contact long enough to  complete their maneuver, but before they could get into any favorable position the officer heard a roar. He looked up and saw the shapes of jets pass over. Experience told him they were Yuktobanian designs; he gritted his teeth at the realization. The MiGs had arrived.

The first MiG-29M had been alerted to the high possibility of snipers on the perimeter, and instead of wasting her gun rounds trying to pick them off, got creative. After some talking with the jumpy controllers in the tower, the pilot was told the assault had come from the north. The pilot circled, her partner higher above, looking to pounce on something after his division lead made her move, and roared low and fast over the area the SF units had come at the base from, pushing her Fulcrum into full afterburner for the briefest of seconds as she passed over the hills the snipers were in. After that, she broke to the left, flares in the MiG's wake, and climbed high, now back in military power.

"Ow, fuck me!" Teiji bellowed, covering his ears despite the plugs in them.

"Oates, stay out of sight! Don't let that bird or its friend get a bead on you! Everyone else, find some cover!" Knight radioed.

Lucky for everyone on the ground, the MiGs carried no bombs, just guns and air-to-air missiles. There was one other nice event happening as well...

Twenty Miles South of the airfield...

The green light near the back of the C-17 Globemaster told the two lines of Osean paratroopers it was time to go. In rapid succession, the men hustled for the exit they'd been assigned. One by one tan parachutes blossomed near the rear side doors of the cargo jet. Young men, some barely a month or two out of jump school, were performing the first jump since Yuktobania. It was always a proud moment when the Division got to do such a thing, no doubt. They sailed towards the featureless desert, designated LZ Lunar. The men would be forced to hug the ground for defense, mostly, or use the sparse few bumps that qualified as hills until their transit arrived.

That transit was coming in the form of JLTVs and Strykers. The latter was being dropped in both infantry-carrying and Mobile Gun System variants. The heavier vehicles actually weren't dropped, but rather delivered via LAPES (Low-Altitude Parachute Extraction System). aircraft carrying them would fly low over a predetermined strip, marked by the first paras with IR beacons, and slide the Strykers from the back ramps mere feet off the ground. The 101st Airborne could pride itself in being the first regular coalition formation to set foot in Kedhan. Over the radio of the SF troopers, there was a transmission.

"All teams assaulting the airfield, all teams assaulting the airfield, this is Spade 6, we are landing and organizing a relief force. Gimmie a SITREP, over." Lieutenant Colonel Andrea Sharpe, the CO of the battalion, radioed.

Odin sighted in on the remaining three soldiers in the stairwell, loosing three shots in quick succession before he and Dusty displaced to get out of the line of sight of the MiGs.  "Uh, boss, these MiGs are getting a little too close for comfort," Dusty radioed as they moved.

    "Roger that, Dusty."

Meanwhile Zeus radioed, "Spade 6, Spade 6, AFO Triton. Currently heavily engaged on the airfield perimeter.  We've also got a couple of MiGs making a nuisance of themselves, over."  Switching over to the SOAR's frequency he called, "Stalker, Stalker.  Be advised we've got MiGs in the air.  May want to stay back, over."

    Gale replied, "Roger that, Triton."

The assault element had used the brief slowing to their advantage, one ran through the smoke and lobbed an M6 SLAM mine onto the BTRs engine deck. The Gustav team in the mean time had pulled back down the embankment, followed by the remaining support team. Jester had laid down one last barrage of 40mm, half smoke, half HE.

The two MiGs circled still, looking to swoop at the raiders below. Next they chose to buzz the SEALs as the BTR was pounded further by weapons until it finally slowed to a stop, disabled. Both jets made a full afterburner pass by the Navy commandos, roaring off and away. They split and pulled back towards relative safety. The fun was fleeting for them, though, as the F-22s had broken through their comrades and were on course to get them. This allowed the A-10s they were escorting to at least start their approach. While the paratroopers to the south organized, the ground attack aircraft could help the SF operators in any way possible.

"Lawman, Lawman, this is Snaggletooth Lead, flight of four A-10s. Ready for tasking." A voice told the Delta communications expert. He immediately hugged what cover he had and responded.

"Snaggletooth, Lawman, we need immediate close air support. Pinned down by several enemy footmobiles. Danger close!" He radioed.

"Understood Lawman, mark your position with an IR strobe and standby." the A-10 radioed.

"Sir, we've got CAS inbound!" Roadkill shouted to Knight.

"Good, everyone hold position and make sure your strobes are lit." Knight replied calmly as he pulled back into cover to let a Kedhani guard waste a few rounds of ammo.

In the meantime All but one of the Kedhani troopers in the tower had been killed at this point by Odin's weapon. The last man sat at the very top of the stairs, having commandeered the LMG one of his fallen friends had once used. He waited for the inevitable final stand. The MiGs, in the meantime, made further passes along the perimeter to confuse the snipers before they were inevitably jumped by the F-22s.

"Finally..." muttered Axt, and he signaled his men forward. Picking through the wreckage of the buildings, they cautiously moved towards the area were the retreating soldier had disappeared. The support line moved back to their positions and watched the assault team move until they vanished. The SEALs stayed ready, anything that looked human and moved would receive several 7.62x51 rounds to the chest or head.

"Boss, still one left.  You want us to get him?"  Dusty radioed.

"Negative.  Get in cover.  We'll take him.  We'll need you when we clear the tower."

    "Copy."

Genghis turned to the rest of the team and began giving out orders.  "Voodoo, cover.  Get his head down.  Preacher, nail that sumbitch."

    "Aye aye."

    "Check."

Preacher tossed another flashbang into the stairwell followed by a smoke grenade, after which Voodoo stepped into the stairwell and began laying down suppressing fire, the rhythmic pounding of the Mk. 43 filling the space while Preacher came in under the big machine gunner and fired off a quick three-round burst at the final Kedhani.

"Roger that Triton, we'll keep an eye out." Spade 6 said.

The Lieutenant Colonel climbed into the back of her command Stryker and settled down to get a gasp on the situation. Already TOW and M2-equipped JLTVs were out ahead, scouting for the main force. The airborne troops weren't equipped to take on the Kedhani reinforcements directly; the head of the unit dropped would have to maneuver her ATGM-carrying vehicles to hit them quick and bring air support on them as often as she could. The latter was being promised in a steady supply.

At the airfield, The Kedhanis the SEALs were after had put  what distance they could between them and the commandos, while a few fanatically souls held position in concealed places about the area, waiting to strike. As Axt passed some wreckage, one such man, a young conscript who had been completely devoted to his country's figurehead, tackled Axt, live grenade between them. He screamed some incoherent, nationalistic slogan in his native language.

The last man in the tower fired back even as he was disoriented by the flashbang, at least until a bullet struck him in the neck. He collapsed on the walkway, leaving the path open. In the tower's top, the three controllers did nothing. They had no weapons; their best option was simple cooperation. After all, the UN soldiers cared about world opinions, and any reckless killings would cause severe backlash.

"Snaggletooth, we need that air support, now!" Roadkill yelled.

Above the fight, one of the A-10s guided its fellow aircraft in. They'd deploy GBU-12s first before making any gun runs. Brad looked up as one of the machines raced over perpendicular to their streams of fire to avoid dropping on them. Though they were just facing infantry, said infantry were dug in and had the Delta pinned in a bad position. A 500 lb. explosion changed that.

"Good hits, Snaggletooth!" Roadkill confirmed as the first attacker came off target.

Axt saw something detach from the dark out of the corner of his eye. The distance was too short for him to turn and engage the conscript. He fell with a heavy thump. "Grenade!!!" he yelled, feeling the pressure of it on his chest. The rest of the SEALs dove for cover. Axt took the brunt of the grenade, which tore through his armor, along with the conscript. A call came over the command net. "Phantom 1-1 has a man down." The rest of the SEALs peaked out of cover to see Axts sprawled out on the ground. "CORPSMAN!" The doc bounded over, but a quick check confirmed the teams dreading suspicions. "Phantom 1-1 Actual is down." There air seemed hang suspended, but the Jester took over. "This is Jester, taking command." The SEALs left a man with the body and proceeded further in. They slowly moved, checking each corner carefully. Any soldier found was put down with 2 rounds to the chest an one to the head. Slowly, they cleared the building.

As the Kedhani's inaccurate fire went silent and the man fell to the catwalk, Preacher called out, "Tango down."

    Genghis called back, "Outstanding."

After a moment, Dingo joined Preacher in the stairwell while Voodoo reloaded his M60, and the three made their way up the stairs, kicking away the Kedhanis' weapons and checking the results of Odin's handiwork.  At the top, Voodoo bashed in the door to the control room with a sledge hammer, and the two riflemen quickly cleared the room, Dingo zip-tying the three controllers.  Once the room was clear, Preacher radioed, "Room's secure, boss."

"Excellent.  Odin, Dusty, collapse on us."

    "Roger."

The sniper and spotter displaced from their position and quickly made their way to the control tower while the rest of the team set up shop, Zeus clearing off a desk and setting up a SOFLAM and his radios.  Once he was ready, he radioed, "Spade, Stalker, Triton.  Be advised, we have taken the control tower.  Repeat, control tower is friendly."

"Roger that, Zeus.  Stalker copies.  Nice job.  Those MiGs still around?"

"Uh...  We haven't seen 'em.  I think the Raptors got 'em out of our hair."

In Stalker 1-1, Gale said to herself, "Well, at least they're finally making themselves useful."  Hopping back on the radio, she said, "Roger that.  We're standing by for tasking."

"Roger that Triton, we've got A-10s above if yah haven't noticed; I'll pass em off to you. Priority targets are enemy aircraft on ground, followed by any reinforcements coming this way." Brad replied.

He was able to breathe easier now with the A-10s overhead. The man watched as the few remaining security forces were fleeing. He passed them off to Teiji and Triton's snipers. Oates picked off any he saw, which were few already.

"Stalker be advised, we've got footmobiles running." the Delta sniper advised.

Upon hearing of the SEAL's tragedy, the paratroop commander got on the horn.

"Phantom, this is Spade 6. Can you get the casualty to a safe place? I'm sending a QRF to reinforce you all. We're in contact with Kedhani armor and mech east of the airport. We'll get your casualty onto an ambulance." the Colonel radioed as her Stryker bounded across the sand. She had no idea they'd cleaned out their target, but at this point every inch outside her vehicles was unsafe.

Jester's Redmill accent came over the radio,"Roger Six, objective is secure, one casualty."

Returning to where Axt had fallen, they picked him up and lifted him to the outside, where they set up security.

"Spade 6, Phantom 1-1 is near the barracks entrance, security is up both inside and outside.

"Roger that.  Stalker, stay in a holding pattern for now.  I'll check in when I have something for you.  Gotta see what these Hogs have for us first," Zeus radioed.

Gale replied jokingly, "Aww, come on, Triton.  You really know how to make a girl feel unwanted."

"Sorry, Hurricane.  I'll make sure you get your rocks off on SOMETHING."

"That's all we ask, buddy.  That's all we ask."

Chuckling, Zeus hailed the A-10s.  "Snaggletooth, Snaggletooth, Triton.  Say lineup and ordnance, over."

Meanwhile, Odin had begun pumping HEIAP rounds into the parked MIGs, the booming of the M107 deafening in the confines of the control tower.

"Okay Phantom, we'll be on scene in about ten." The Colonel radioed. She frowned and looked at her XO.

"Major, report." the woman asked. He looked away from the maps and radios at his CO.

"We managed to get behind a small column of Kedhani armor and start tearing em up, Colonel. The troops that did it took some hits, but their positioning themselves to cut off the main road to the base." He replied.

"Good, have CAS focus on their situation; we'll be okay at the airport." She ordered.

"Triton, Snaggletooth, we're loaded with six Mavs, four Paveway, and 1,100 rounds apiece. Give us a target." the lead A-10 radioed.

In the meantime the fire had died down for Lawman. Brad kept his position, not even trying to reload for fear the Kedhanis still had something out there.

"Triton, priority targets are the MiGs...I'd get close with C4 but the way the Kedhanis are acting we should just hit em from long range." He reasoned.

Genghis looked over at Odin, who, having finished liberally applying Mk. 211 rounds to the MiGs, flashed a thumbs up.  Genghis nodded with approval and radioed, "Already a step ahead of you.  MiGs are out of play."

Meanwhile Zeus radioed, "Snaggletooth, we have multiple foot mobiles crossing the tarmac.  Give me two runs of thirty mike mike."

Brad watched as one of the A-10s rushed over, making a gun run against the running Kedhanis. The GAU-8 roared angrily for a short time before the jet shot upwards. The second one was close behind, also sparing a few rounds to finish a few of the MiGs. The Deltas had stopped shooting to let the A-10s do their thing, and found the shooting had stopped. He pulled his team back towards the control tower and set them up in whatever positions they could get.

As promised, the Colonel was on the scene in ten minutes. After giving the operators a heads up, a Stryker crashed through part of the gate, another of its type in near parallel with it. The two vehicles stopped near the farthest MiG and unloaded their infantry. An armored HUMVEE, roling alongside a MEDEVAC variant of itself, split from the two APCs and rolled to meet Phantom. More HUMVEEs and the Colonel's command vehicle became visible as well, taking the far side of the base and securing a perimeter.

"Spade 6 to all operators, the cav has arrived. You can extract; we'll take the rest of the reaction force." she said.

In the meantime the MEDEVAC stopped near the SEALs, two medics hurrying out the back.

"Triton copies. Shadow, we could use a ride.  Stalker, cover our extract?"

    Gale replied, "Roger that."

Reaper's voice came over the radio as the 3 transport Blackhawks took off from the holding point, "Shadow's inbound.  10 minutes.  Stalker, I expect the LZ to be nice and frigid when we get there."

Gale chuckled, "You got it, boss."

The two DAPs began making continuous runs, hammering any exposed targets with minigun, Chain Gun, and rocket fire.

"Shadow 1-1, Triton.  You can pick us up from the roof of the control tower.  Will mark with strobe."

    "Roger that."

The Triton operators collected their gear and made their way out to the roof of the control building, Voodoo placing charges on a few of the larger antennas to clear space for the Blackhawk.

"Shadow, Outlaw, you can grab us from the tarmac, will also mark with strobe." Brad radioed, pulling the aforementioned device from his gear.

"Shadow, Stalker, check fire, all Spade elements are setting up blocking positions along the south and eastern perimeter." One of the 101st's officers on the field radioed as he directed his troops. The few remaining Kehanis had left their weapons behind and simply ran, more content to brave the desert than the coalition.

Brad ordered Teiji to fall in on the group and redeployed his unit into a perimeter to protect the LZ. The air still felt tense until Tobes decided to be his usual self.

"So we just took an airfield...that was pretty fucking ninja." He chuckled.

"If ninjas get in prolonged firefights, then yeah that's ninja, Tobes." Roadkill deadpanned as one of the A-10s flew over to harrass the Kedhanis' reaction force.

Gale radioed, "Roger that, Stalker copies.  Shadow, they're running like little girls.  You're cleared in."

Reaper chuckled, "Speaking from experience, Stalker?  Shadow's inbound."

"Yeah.  I administered your last PT test, remember?"

Reaper was silent as he brought the Blackhawk into a hover next to the Triton operators.  As he clambered onto the helo, Zeus, who had been listening to the exchange between Reaper and Gale, said jokingly, "Dang, Reaper, you need some burn ointment?  I think Dingo's got some in his pack."

Dingo said nonchalantly, "It wouldn't help."

"Har har.  You kids have a good day at school?"

Genghis chuckled, "It's always a good day when one can get his ninja on."

    "Very true."

Meanwhile, Shadow 1-2 flared for a landing by Lawman, the crew chief beckoning to them from behind the minigun.

"Damn Reaper, I felt the burn from that over here. Never knew hurricanes could give you third degree." Brad laughed as he settled into position on the floor.

"Well that's why we enjoy having Miss Sharky around, huh?" Roadkill reasoned.

"Hey don't let her hear you, you'll need burn ointment if she does." Crusher added in.

Lifting Axt up, the SEALs carried him into the MEDEVAC. The SEALs then paused, removed their helmets and saluted their former commander. Jester was on the verge of tears, but composed himself, returned his helmet to his head and lead the SEALs to the LZ they would use. "
Stalker, LZ is marked with a strobe." radioed Jester. Kneeling, he mulled over what had happened. "What went wrong? Why didn't we prep for this?" were some thoughts that crossed his mind as he waited. "No don't think to much, that starts you down a bad path." he muttered to himself. Doc looked at him quizzically and asked, "Hey Boss, you okay?"

"Yeah buddy, just fine, trying no to think to much."
