Wing Blue: Part 1 the Meeting

Post by viperzero on Sun Jun 28, 2015 5:00 pm

    Rocket City
    New Mexico, United States
    March 11th 1987 10:00 hours

Ray Arnold’s work beeper wouldn’t stop buzzing, though he was trying to get in as fast as he could there was no way to tell the caller he was right at the gate.

    What a stupid toy.

After being let in by the Air Force police Arnold jumped out of his blue 1976 Pinto got on the tram and headed to Rocket cities meeting room. As far he could tell nothing was out of the ordinary. The thousands of workers and civilians on base seemed calm. He smiled

The old man tells his pilots first

However he knew for a fact there would ultimately be little else to smile about today.

He got off at his stop and walked into the lobby of the flight planning building, an unassuming concrete box near the middle of the complex. The lobby was nothing-spectacular blue walls with sofa’s and a vending machine. There were a few aircraft pictured on the walls which where the only decorations. He could see the briefing room door was closed.

    He’s not here yet

Looking around he could see no one else other than Sabrina Kelly one of the test pilots he knew. Come to think of it she was only one he knew, most had only been around for a short time, replacements after one of the tests ended in disaster.

    “Hello Sabrina”

“Oh--- hello, nice to see you again, how are you?”

    He nodded and sat down.

He waited for the others to show, he wondered if he should tell them what he suspected? He could have been wrong after all; the meting could have been something routine, some dumb test pilot gotten themselves killed and they had to talk about how sad it was or whatever.

With international tensions being what they where over the last few months and the mobilizations on both sides he felt what he was thinking was closer to the truth.

Better play nice and try not to scare anyone, the old man can worry about that.

    --------------
Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe, Casteau
    Belgium
    The same time

“Ok OP India, your on line 3. General Rogers is listing. Tell us everything you just said”

There was a two second delay; NATO’s communication equipment was overloaded bad news from all over. Most upsetting was the one place they were not getting calls from, West Berlin

“Its like we said, we’re looking at two, three dozen T-72s crossing the check point..., and uh a similar number of armored cars nearby. We’re also seeing a number of lights in the distance, its hard to see but their where a lot of them.”

NATO’s command room had received many similar reports over the last few hours; there could be no doubt, invasion.

Some of the staff had become so upset they needed to leave the building, which they where allowed to do, under armed guard. Suddenly a man in the back shouted.

“Some Hinds just hit one of our convoys near Hamburg!”

The shock only lasted a few seconds when someone else yelled

“Hey there are hundreds of enemy aircraft moving towards the boarder!”

    On Approach to Rocket City
    New Mexico, United States
    March 11th 1987 10:02 Hours

The fourship of F-15C Eagles cruised along at 16,000 feet through the cloudless sky. No one spoke; there wasn't much to talk about in the face of Soviet tanks rolling across the East-West German border. The Eagles, assigned to the 53rd TFS, were assigned to US Air Forces Europe, and the lead pilot, Lt. Cody "Ranger" Walker, was a Navy pilot who'd been on exchange with them for a few months. Last he'd heard, USS Saratoga and his squadron, VF-74, were bound for the North Atlantic. Meanwhile he was here, neither with the 53rd nor VF-74. It didn't make Cody a very enthusiastic pilot. Either way he had a job to do, so he keyed up the radio as he approached the point on the map they'd briefed on.

"Rocket Tower, Rocket Tower, this is Blaster 2, Flight of Four. Requesting clearance for approach." He radioed in his southern accent.

    Rocket City
    New Mexico, United States
    March 11, 1987, 1100 Hours

Major Subha Sarkar walked off the ramp of the C-130 into the sweltering heat of the New Mexico desert.  "Hell of a lot different from English weather..."  The tall Indian-American shaded his eyes with a hand as they adjusted to the bright sunlight.  Looking around to accustom himself with his surroundings, he noticed an airman standing in the distinguished visitors terminal with a sign bearing his name.

Walking over, he introduced himself.  "Major Sarkar.  I believe I'm expected?"

Meanwhile, Devon "Dexter" Jones walked into the lobby of the flight planning building.  Looking around, he said to himself, "Well this is boring."  Noticing Sabrina sitting at one of the tables, he walked over and introduced himself.  "How's it going.  Name's Devon.  Devon Jones.  And you are?"

The airman, realizing that his performance here would decide if he would keep his cushy job or sent to the front in Europe was more than willing to be helpful.

"SIR! YES SIR! I've been instructed to take you to the mission planing room and show you the base SIR!

    -------

Sabrina had been lost in though, she been thinking about all sorts of things, her projects in her room half complete. She hoped to finish them soon, it bothered her to leave everything in an unfinished state. Current events where also on her mind, the recent confrontation in German and her hope that things would get better. While she disliked the idea of war, it was more the fear everything would soon end, all the lives lost, her plans trashed regardless of anything she could do that bothered her most.

She then noticed the man she did not know in front of her

    "oh-- hello--- I'm good"

she reached to shake his hand, remembering she hadn't said her name yet. smiling she extended her hand to the new man.

    "I'm Sabrina Kelly---how are you?"

Across the room Arnold smiled at Sabrina fumbling. though they where both asocial people, he was a clear and organized communicator. Sabrina on the other hand, unless it was work related, struggled with fluent conversation. She almost never spoke unless spoken too, preferring to stay in her head or talk to herself. when she was forced to talk to someone he always found it amusing, especially since unlike his younger self she tried her damnedest to be friendly.

Subha chuckled at the airman's stiff reaction.  "Calm it down, kid.  I'm a major, not your dad.  Anyway, lead on."

As the two made their way to the planning room he asked, "Tensions are high around here, eh?"

    ---

Devon chuckled, "Nice to meet you.  I'm alright.  Wondering what the hell there is to do around this joint."

The young airman led the way and than spoke to answer Subha's questions.

"Yea, mind you it hasn't been too bad, I just don't think anyone expected anything to happen, really happen until it did. Most of us have buddies, hell a few of us even family in Europe right now. Its all gunna change soon, even if it doesn't go nuclear I don't think anything here or anywhere will be the same for a long time."

the young airman looked very pale.

"the Old Ma--- General Allan takes very good care of us though, I wouldn't want another commander going into this. He hand picks all the pilots and a good number of the support staff, so if he picked you you've got to be damned good. its an honor sir."

    ----

    Sabrina lit up a bit

"oh I've been modifying my computer, you see I have a Macintosh, and I was trying to make it able to go online. Its not hard but their is a lot of red tape in a place like this.-- In my spare time I program a tiny bit for this thing called Xanadu, its a world wide hyper text system that allows you to cross-reference documents and associate them together. Anyone with a connected computer can use it and add to it."

she was silent for a second

"uh-- is there anything you like to do? its a big base with a lot of stuff you know."

across the room Arnold decided it was time to jump in

"Tell him about the Cars and the Bar!"

"Oh General Allen and his wife own a bar some of the pilots go to, and they have this old Corvette. Sometimes we take our cars into the desert and race them, the cops don't really patrol there."

Subha nodded, "I know that feeling.  Hell, I was in England up until I came down here."

    ****

Devon raised an eyebrow.  "The CO owns a bar?  Well.  This is gonna be interesting, to say the least."

Sitting down and pulling out a dossier on the SA-13 Strela 10 system, he began reading, musing aloud, "I wonder when the hell my pilot's gonna get here..."

"Roger that Rocket, Blaster's coming in."

Cody brought his F-15 downwards so he could see the runway. The path they'd been sent on meant they would be easily able to slip into the landing pattern and come down onto the runway. Cody played the game of back and forth with the tower as he lowered the gray fighter towards the runway. Cody was used to much more...touchy...landings, so this was nothing. He flared and eased the big fighter down more, flaps in position and gear down. The young man glanced around at what would be his temporary home for maybe a day.

"Looks a lot like Nellis." He said, recalling when he went through ACM training with VF-124.

The tires squealed as they hit the pavement and left skid marks. the nose came down and brought the Eagle fully to the ground. Cody applied the brakes as he kept the throttles back, slowing the F-15 carefully. He didn't stop fully so the others could land in short order. When he was rolling at a good taxing speed, he turned off the runway and headed towards the buildings that he'd been told were those of Wing Blue. As he slowed near the crew, he raised the canopy, immediately glad he'd rolled up his sleeves. His wingman, Captain "Havoc" Jean, was rolled into position to his left.

a V-100 with some Air Force Police pulled up to the f-15s. a tall man with a slight texan accent walked out, more stripes on his shoulders than most would bother to count. He saluted the newly arrived pilots.

"Sirs I have orders to take you to our briefing room."

Cody returned the salute after he'd removed his helmet, Havoc right behind him.

"Lead the way." He said. Blasters 2-3 and 2-4 were right behind him.

Subha entered the meeting room, looking around.  "Hmm...  Not much here..."

Meanwhile, Devon, who was still halfway through his reading, looked up and saw an air force major with F-111 patches walk in.  "Aardvark guy?  Maybe he's my pilot..."  Standing up, he went to introduce himself.  "Excuse me, sir.  You wouldn't happen to be Major Sarkar, would you?"

Subha looked over the lanky black man standing before him.  "I would.  And you are?"

"Devon Jones, sir.  I think I'm supposed to be your WSO."

"Ah.  Good to meet you."  Subha thought for a moment, "Wait...  I know you from somewhere.  Were you ever with the 79th?"

"Yes, sir.  For a couple of years, then I transitioned to the 391st."

"Ah, I remember you now.  I guess you joined right around when i was leaving.  Didn't you get in a fight about whether or not MANPADS were still a relevant threat?"

Devon chuckled, "Yes sir, that was me."

"Heh, lovely.  So what brought you back to CONUS?"

"Well, they wanted me to help out on the Strike Eagle program, but I despise the F-15, so I begged them to let me stay in F-111s instead."

"I see.  So this place is pretty bare.  Anything to do around here?"

Devon shook his head.  "Not really, sir.  Although apparently the CO owns a bar with his wife."

Subha raised an eyebrow.  "The general owns a bar?"

Devon nodded.  "That was my reaction too."

    "Interesting..."

    Devon nodded, "Yes sir."

Subha frowned, "Okay, Devon, if we're gonna be flying together, you're gonna have to knock off the 'sir' crap.  Call me Subha, call me Sinbad, hell, call me Suzy McFuckButt, just call me anything but sir."

Devon said, "Yes si-...  I mean, Sinbad."

"That's better.  What was your callsign again? I don't particularly remember it."

    "Dexter."

    "Heh, it fits."

Ranger entered the room with his small flight in tow. They took some seats close to the F-111 crew after reporting in. Cody took out a pack of Winston Blues from his flightsuit and clenched one with his lips. He noted the patches on the uniforms of the two and approached them.

"Aardvark drivers, eh? Any chance either of you came from the 48th TFW?" He asked, looking to make conversation when he approached.

As the small number of pilots filled in the room the General Allen stood behind the podium, slightly elevated above the ground. He as the last few pilots took their sets he took off his aviators and turned on the mic, but took a second before he spoke.

“—What I’m about to tell you is Top Secret, but I’m sure by now its common knowledge.”

“Early this morning a large number of Russian Spetsnaz troops attempted to cross the border, no doubt to assist units that had already made it across. German Border Guards intercepted them and a bloody skirmish broke out. About an hour or so latter we received reports of Warsaw pact armored units crossing the boarder in force and firing on our positions.”

“Consequently---, we are now at War with the Soviet Union.”

The old man let that sit for a minute before continuing.

“Wing Blue will be renamed the Special Armed Response Force and sent to Europe. Most of us have been preparing all our professional lives for this to happen. Even so I think I speak for us all when I say however none of us wished to ever see it come to pass.”

“We are about to begin a great struggle, not just to Defeat the Soviets, not just to defend the world from murderous communism, not just to make sure that the sacrifices of 1918 and 1945 where not in vain, but for the survival of the human race. Extermination is what we will face if we fail.”

“Though I have yet to meet most of you personally, I did select each and everyone of you for this Organization. Though this was not the task you where all called for, it has been at the back of my mind for the better part of a decade and played a role in you selections.”

“I have every expectation we will succeed in our mission, and after a long struggle return peace to the world.”

He took a moment to compose himself

“SARF’s first mission will be to destroy the Dessau Bridge in East Germany.”

“This has historically been an important crossing, in 1626 it was the site of a major battle in the thirty years war. Since than it has played a role in the movement of troops in every single German war.”

“Which should mean it’s got some serious mileage by now---“

“Anyway this is are target. Its not extremely well guarded right now do to the chaos of the East German mobilization. One SA-6, two ZSU-23-4s, a number of heavy machine guns and Man Portable SAMs, and a flight of East German Mig-23s.”

“You are to fly across the Atlantic, refuel along the way several times, land at RAF Lakenheat and then hit the bridge.”

    “Any questions?”

Devon raised his hand.  "Only one SA-6 and a pair of Shilkas?  Really?  Seems rather light to me."

Subha asked, "Since it seems we're the only Aardvark here, will the 48th be providing us with a wingman?"

"Son when I was a young man intel told us we could get as close to the Yalu as we needed to and push the North Koreans into China, guess how that went?"

"Millions of troops and thousands of tanks running through Germany and half the population is renacting exodus. With all that I doubt very much the situation around this single bridge has stayed the same or is being adequately monitored. Intel will try to keep us up to date, but when Washington is overwhelming them with updates every ten seconds and all their sources I wouldn't count on them."

"what I'm trying to say is that where on our own, this information is a rough guide at best"

"as for other craft, our friend from the CIA Mr Arnold will be with you in a B-57, the Air Force says they are trying to do their best to make sure another F-111 will be with you, but a lot can change in 24 hours."

Dexter nodded, "Roger that, sir."  "This is gonna be a nightmare..."

Meanwhile Subha nodded in response to General Allen's answer, but in his head he thought, "A B-57?  In 1987?  Trying to keep up with 111s?  That guy's screwed."

Cody had only managed to get out his name and was about to offer a cigarette and ask them if they'd happened to have been involved in El Dorado Canyon when the briefing started. He grabbed a seat and listened, noting things relevant to his part of the mission. He figured he would be leading Blaster against the MiG-23s. He had a few questions of his own.

"Do we know the type of MiG-23s? MF models? ML? And will we have any support besides our jets like an AWACS?" He asked.

Dexter spoke up, "Last I read the Russians had MiG-23MLDs in the area.  Which should be a party for you guys."

Cody frowned a little, but wasn't shaking in his boots, at least not yet. The MLD was supposed to be good, an attempt to bring the MiG-23 to modern standards. But a MiG-23 was still a MiG-23...
