Ace Combat: Wing Blue Mission 1: A Bridge Too Far

Post by viperzero on Sat Jul 04, 2015 8:35 pm

In 1987 the so-called “Second Cold war” had exploded into a hot one. The years since 1979 had proven the tenses of the Post World War II era. The Soviet decisions to Invade Afghanistan and than Iran cause many Americans to feel Détente was little more than appeasement. 1980 saw the relatively friendly Jimmy Carter replaced by the Anti-Communist Ronald Reagan. Reagan continued a massive build up of the American armed forces never before seen in peacetime US history. Reagan casually used Anti-Soviet rhetoric in just about all his forging poly speeches and even referred to it publicly as “The Evil Empire.”

None of this had gone unnoticed in the Soviet Union. In 1981 Chairman of the KGB ordered Operation Ryan in order to monitor signs of war. Ryan was merely a matrix where possible warning signs where checked off and compared with other events. For instance the US army buying more medical supplies than usual might raise an eyebrow, or security at US military bases increasing. The combination of events like this would prevent the Soviets from getting caught off guard like in 1941.

Ryan however had problems; the most glaring was that KGB agents would send Intel to Moscow but not their opinion of the situation. As a result, policy recommendations where made by men with only second hand information.  Yuri Andropov, Ryan’s creator became General Secretary of the USSR after the death of long time General Secretary Leonid Brezhnev. Andropov became very dependent on his brainchild and KGB agents where under pressure extreme to give Intel. Infamously Soviet operatives would camp outside the Ministries of Defenses in NATO countries and count the lights to see if they had been working late planning war, not consideration to the possibility of a new janitorial policy.

The assassination of Pope John Paul, a popular anti communist Pole, lead to major rioting in his native Poland and the assassins links to Bulgarian intelligence isolated the Soviets internationally. 1983-1983 led to a series of events that nearly lead to war. The US invasion of Granada, the Lebanese barrack bombing, and most importantly the Soviet shoot down of Korean Air Lines 007, an error in the Soviet ICBM early warning system at this time nearly caused a nuclear exchange.  War was averted but soon after Andropov died and the Soviets experienced a quick succession of leaders. When the dust settled Viktor Grishin a hardliner became the General Secretary. Shortly after Vladimir Kryuchkov became head of the KGB, Kryuchkov was rabidly anti American and began to pass only information that suited his worldview.

In 1986 the US began a bombing campaign of Libya. The Soviet leadership considered Gaddafi a liability, but many hardliners saw this as a chance to drum up support for war.  Around New Years the Soviets began mobilizing for an Invasion, while troops in Northern Iran and Afghanistan started a slow crawl south, while in Europe Soviet forces amassed to move west.

Excerpt from One Last Big War: A History of World War III
By Nicholas Anderson Naval Institute Press 1998

"I know not with what weapons World War III will be fought, but World War IV will be fought with sticks and stones."
    Albert Einstein

His B-57 fitted with advanced ECM equipment, Raymond Arnold was confident this mission would provide NATO with a major advantage that could drastically reduce the air wars duration. If he was successful Warsaw Pact air defenses would be significantly less effective. He also needed to do some favors for some old friends in the CIA, some rumors about the East German air defense that he needed to confirm personally.

The Old Aircraft moved from the Taxiway to the Run way

    "Mycroft requesting permission to takeoff."

    "Roger Mycroft, happy hunting"

The engines got louder and louder while anyone standing behind them would see the black insides of the large cylinders grow bright yellow. The aircraft started moving, first walking speed, then fast as a car, then a drag racer right before if lifted into the air and made its way toward Germany.

The pair of heavily laden F-111Fs rolled onto the runway.

"Tower, Hammer 1 flight of two ready for takeoff."

"Roger Hammer,  wind 5 knots at 010, you are cleared for takeoff."

"Roger that, Hammer 1-1's rolling."  With that, Subha pushed the F-111's throttles forward, sending the big strike jet screaming into the sky, followed by Chewy and Nitro in Hammer 1-2.

As the two F-111s leveled off at their cruising altitude, Subha radioed, "So, you guys have been over the curtain already, right?"

    Chewy replied, "Yeah."

    "How bad is it?"

Nitro spoke up, "Well I can tell you for certain there's gonna be a hell of a lot more than an SA-6 battery and a coupla Zeuses waiting for us.  We're lucky that we've only lost one plane."

    "Who'd we lose?"

"Snoopy and Cue Ball.  First night."

"Awww, shit.  Did they get out?"

Daren said sadly, "We don't know.  Everybody was too busy trying to save their own asses.  One of those new SA-15s came out of nowhere and ganked him."

"Shit.  Well, let's hope we can keep the tally low, huh?"

    "You got it, sir."

Cody lowered the canopy as the F-15's engines behind him came to life. His new crew chief, a Staff Sergeant named Wycoft, waited until his aircraft was spooled up and ready before giving him any signals. Cody eased the fighter from its hardened shelter and onto the runway of Lakenheath as the sun was setting. He exchanged salutes with Wycoft and looked forward.

"Lakenheath Tower, Blaster 2-1 requesting permission to taxi to runway." He radioed.

"Blaster 2-1, permission granted. Taxi to runway 1-C."

A plane director guided him towards the strip of tarmac that would get him there before they exchanged salutes. He swung left and checked everything for the second time. His gauges were all running smooth, and his cockpit lighting was working just fine. His radios, as well as his flight's, were just as good.

As he turned onto the runway, Cody's mind shifted to the threats and terrain. This part of Germany was generally flat, which meant that you would have to do something really stupid to auger in. On the other hand the SAMs and AA guns below had nothing to block their LOS. If the MiGs wanted to ambush em, they'd stay low so their camo'd tops would only be visible. He rolled onto the runway and stopped to contact the tower again, Havoc at his side.

"Lakenheath Tower, Blaster 2-1 requesting clearance for departure on runway 1-C." He spoke up again.

"Roger that Blaster 2-1, you are cleared for departure down Runway 1-C. Winds 5 knots at 010. Good luck."

Cody clenched his teeth in what Anne had coined a "() Grin" and pushed the throttles forward. The F-15's engines roared steadily as he took off in full military power. At the proper speed he eased the stick back and left the runway. The two F-15s climbed almost immediately, heading out and away from the launch pattern.

"Still not as good as a Tomcat, Ranger?" Havoc asked.

"Keep dreamin, Havoc." Cody nearly laughed.

By the time the F-111s and B-57 were airborne, the four fighters had established a solid CAP with which to escort them with. Now they just needed their RAF compatriots.

The Tornado F.3s start up. Robert lowers the canopy and radios to the tower.

"Lakenheath Tower, Sabre 1-1 requesting permission to taxi to runway."

"Sabre 1-1, permission granted." the tower replied.

The Tornados taxi to Runway 1-C before Robert radios the tower again.

"Lakenheath Tower, Sabre 1-1 requesting clearance for take off on Runway 1-C."

"You're cleared for take off. Godspeed and good luck, Sabre flight." the tower replied before the Tornado F.3s accelerated down the runway and lifted off to join their American counterparts in escorting the F-111s.

Cody signaled the F.3s with his lights to keep radio silence for now and then waited for orders from AWACS or any word from the strikers.

From hundreds of miles away a large aircraft similar in appearance to a commercial aircraft, but with a large disk on the top monitored the airspace over Germany. The plane sent electromagnetic signals to allied planes with commands and information.

“This is AWACS call sign SkyEye, you are now under my command. Fighters, four MIG-23 floggers continue east to intercept. Bombers proceed to target, be forewarned air defenses are still active!”

As he crossed the Rhine, Arnold began to prepare his aircraft for battle, the ECM system was activated and bombs armed. His crafts cameras were also recording looking for anything out of the ordinary.

The East German Air Defenses had been tracking the ad hoc squadron for sometime but only now where they reasonably sure that their target was indeed Dessau.

As they neared the border between East and West Germany, Dexter said to Subha, "We're getting close, sir."

"Right.  Setting clearance plane 300.  TERFLW active."

The F-111 began descending to 300 feet, followed by Hammer 1-2, as Dexter radioed, "SkyEye, Hammer 1.  Beginning approach, strangling parrot.  Wish us luck."

As the two F-111s crossed the border, a mere hundred feet over the tops of the German forests, the threat display began to light up.  Dexter grumbled, "Hell of a lot more than a pair of SA-6s...  Step it down to 200."

    "Roger that."

"Roger Skyeye, Four bandits at 090. Say Angels?" He requested, hoping to get their altitude as he closed.

Cody glassed the MiGs on his radar as they hit max radar range at roughly 60 miles, but they would have to wait until they were 31 miles out to fire their Sparrows. Nonetheless he made his orders clear to the members of Blaster flight.

"Three, Four, stay behind and jump any of the bastards that try to come from behind. Two, yer with me. Sabre, have at least two of your flight follow us." He ordered, selecting his AIM-7s.

The pilot kept his tanks on for the moment as the ECM stayed quiet. He silently thanked the Phantom pilots, wherever they were. As the range closed to 45 miles he gave Havoc the lead MiG's number two, and locked the APG-70 radar onto the MiG-23 heading the formation. At 40 miles he ditched his tanks and made sure the radar was firmly in Single-Target Track. At 35 He hoped to hear that pretty English drawl of Anne's again and cursed Lenin like the rude American he was one last time.

On his HUD, he had his Flogger in a Target Display Box and the AIM-7s were selected. His finger hovered above the button on his tick for a few long seconds until he had lock. He ripple fired two of the weapons.

"Blaster 2-1, Fox 1, Fox 1." He reported, shooting at around 30 miles.

The incessant beeping of the RWR finally fell silent as the jet descended to 200 feet above ground level, the radar signature merging with the ground clutter.  "10 miles to IP," Dexter said.  Flipping switches, he continued, "ECM's up.  Pave Tack online now."

Subha asked, "How's threat screen look?"

"We're good for now.  The 131 seems to have everyone duped.  Wait, there's an SA-13 on the nose. Gimme 30 right."

The F-111 came slightly right to avoid the SA-13 battery, fitting into a hole in the surprisingly dense Soviet air defense network.  Soon enough, as they passed the city of Dessau itself, the bridge they were attacking came into view on the Pave Tack's green-tinted view screen.

"Alright, I see the bridge.  10 TG to bomb release.  Give me 5 left."

As he finessed the Pave Tack's targeting reticle onto the target, Dexter began humming quietly, "He's a maniac, maaaaaniac on the pood...  Droppin' Paveways like he's never dropped before..."

    SkyEye
    Bandits Angle's seven point five

The MIGs began to lower their altitude in hopes of confusing the Eagle's radar with ground clutter. as they did this they fired their R-23 missiles at the F-15s. The hope was their more favorable position would counter act the Eagles earlier firing or that the F-15s would break before them causing the lock o the semi active air to air missiles to break.

Robert radioed, "Sabres 3 and 4, break off and provide support to the Eagles."

"Roger." Sabre 3 replied as he and his wingman broke off to engage the MiGs.

Sabre 3 gets a lock for a Skyflash missile and fires.

    "Sabre 3, Fox 1!"

Cody let the AIM-7 go when the MiGs shot their own R-23s back at him. He deployed chaff and made an inverted dive to leave the Apex's line of sight, arming his AIM-9s as he went. He kept up his speed to get behind the East German fighters. Havoc and him loosened the two-ship and passed over the Floggers. His wingman supporting him, Cody brought his nose back around towards the MiGs and selected one of the trailers for an AIM-9.

The Migs firing their missiles, though wasteful had paid off. The cowardly capitalist pig pilots had broken off, with no radar to guide them the sparrow was just a decadent metaphor for their doomed economic system. Expensive, aimless and doomed to crash into the ground.

Two Eagles where on their tails, However the other Eagles where gone. The Migs broke into two groups and preformed a Thach Weave. while the F-15s followed the lead two Migs the craft fired flares and chaff to confuse the Heatseakers. The Migs turned forcing the F-15s to follow and allowing the other two Migs to get behind them. Each Mig picked and F-15 and fired one R-60 each.

Meanwhile, the two F-111s had reached their initial point without incident.  Slaving his Pave Tack pod to the bridge, Dexter said, "4 miles to target.  Pop up in three... two... one...  Mark."

Subha pulled the stick back, sending the jet climbing skyward before leveling off at 1000 feet.

    "Alright, got a good lock."

At two miles, Dexter clicked on the laser designator.  "Laser firing.  Release in ten.  Wings level."

Subha leveled out the jet, as Dexter counted down.  As he reached zero, Subha held down the pickle as the RELEASE light on his dashboard illuminated, the stores management system kicking the GBU-24 off the right wing pylon.

    "Bomb's off, clear to turn."

Subha banked left and dumped the nose to return to the safety of low altitude as Devon continued illuminating the bridge for the Paveway.

The East German Air Defenses had been caught with their pants down, soldiers where running to their stations as the first explosions went off. One of the SA-6s was operating and got a lock on the lead F-111 and then fired a 3M9A1 missile at the target. a few seconds later the other SAM was on tracking the target and fired. However in the confusion it fired on the same F-111 as the the first SA-6. the third SAM had been undergoing mechanical repairs and was not yet ready to fire.

Now within four miles the two ZSU-23-4 AA guns fired on the second F-111 in hopes of killing it before it could attack the bridge.

The East German ground controllers where in a panic, they had totally let an allied flight slip in unnoticed and were about to pay big time for it. Doberman flight was already engaged with the NATO fighter escorts and could not take the bombers. Four other MIG-23s where in the area that could be used to intercept the allied aircraft but that would leave Doberman at the mercy of the Eagles, not good odds. One of the radar operators shouted, breaking though the crosstalk.

"Sir Soviet Aircraft, Mig-29s heading towards the F-15s!"

The East German duty officer smiled, though they didn't talk directly to their Russian counterparts it was just as well. Their socialist brothers had made the decision easy for them.

"Very good, divert our Migs to make sure none of those bombers get out alive!"
    --------

Arnold looked at his controls, he was only a little bit behind the F-111s hoping they would do enough damage to let his B-57 make it through the battle. His ECM system was in stand by, the second he was tracked he would start it. He then turned his attention to him bombs.

"Opening Bomb bay doors, and good luck making it home big brothers."

Suddenly his radar warning system went off

    Shit a missile

Sis planes ECM system turned on, with any luck the advanced technology would send the missiles right past his plane. After however a few seconds it was clear something was wrong, his alarms where still ringing, was the ECM not working? it was supposed to be top of the line?

    maybe I should

    BOOM!

His plane shook like it was a car that had been t-boned. he he regained his composure he looked around, at first he could see nothing.

    what the hell was that

    Mycroft
    Something just happened I....

He stopped himself because it was just then he noticed his right wing was on fire

    FUCK!

He tried moving the controls, nothing

This is Mycroft, i'm hit and I have no control, I'm bailing out!

He hit his planes self destruct button that would destroy the wreck and make sure the valuable technology on the plane, that didn't work, wouldn't fall into the wrong hands. He then hit the ejection set. For a second nothing, he had expected a moment of totally terror. He pulled again, nothing.

    no

He took his hands off and started pounding on the canopy

    "NO, NO! SOMEONE HELP! NO!"

After a few seconds of terrors and pounding so hard he broke his hands the plane exploded in mid air, sending small bits of debris, smoke and Raymond Arnold to the ground.

As the Pave Tack screen bloomed white with the explosion of the Paveways, the missile warning blared.  "Shit, two SA-6s!" Devon cried.

Subha broke left and put the F-111 on the deck as Devon streamed chaff from the aircraft's right side dispensers.  Grunting against the G's, Subha said, "Uplink!"

"It's down!"  The ALQ-131 pod mounted aft of the bomb bay had managed to jam the SA-6's targeting radar, severing the tracking uplink between it and the missile.

With the uplink gone, the missiles were dumb and blind, and continued streaking off into the space as Hammer 1-1 returned to the safety of the earth.

Meanwhile, Hammer 1-2 managed to jink away from the two ZSU-23s, only taking a couple of rounds in the wing.  Once away from the SPAAGs, they saw the bridge go down, followed by the two smoke trails of the SA-6s chasing their flight lead.  Lining up on the SAM site, Chewy popped up to 500 feet, seeding a CBU-87 over the offending launchers before breaking hard left and following their flight lead as they headed for home.

Blaster 2-3 and 2-4 were gone...

Cody wanted to mourn, but he couldn't mourn now. As the MiGs split, he recognized the beginnings of a Thatch Weave. After all, he was Navy. He and Havoc  didn't bite, and instead went after a pair each. in Cody's HUD, the TD box around one of the MiGs was chased and met by a circle. With a growling tone in his ear, he depressed the button under his thumb.

"Blaster 2-1, Fox 2." He reported. A few seconds later he repeated the call as he fired on the other MiG. Havoc mirrored his flight lead as he followed the other twoship, even keeping a trailing position to avoid overshooting.

"Sabre, get on these bastards." Cody snapped.

"On it." Sabre 3 replied as he and Sabre 4 closed in on the MiGs. Upon getting there, Sabre 4 gets on one his MiG's six o' clock and obtains a solid radar lock. He fires an AIM-9L Sidewinder at the MiG.

    "Sabre 4, Fox 2!"

Doberman Two looked in horror to see the other three aircraft in his squadron reduced to rapidly descending clouds of smoke and fire. He was now alone to face the enemy fighters and while he might have stood a chance against the multi role tornados, he had no meaningful advantage against the F-15s, which where faster, more maneuverable, could climb faster and were better armed. Hitting the deck and hiding in the Hills while ground defenses covered him seemed like the least suicidal option.
    ---------
The two active SA-6’s were destroyed along with most of the area around the bridge. Troops attempted to free trapped comrades from the ruble. One of the AA guns was destroyed, what was left of it fell into the river drowning its crew, the other furiously fired at the now retreating F-111s. Crews where attempting to get the third running but it looked like the Americans would get away before it was operational.

    ---------
The East German air defense command was in a panic, their failure had lead to the deaths of hundreds and it was to be sure they would be punished for this. However a silver lining was beginning to take shape.

“Sir! Soviet MIG-29s entering the battle space! They are moving to help Doberman Two!”

The East German commander smiled, though they did not communicate directly with their Soviet counter parts, their actions meant he was free to send his MIGs to avenge the bombing and save face.

Fresh from killing Tuna one the Migs vectored into the position of the F-111s and fired their R-23s.

     --------
Four new Soviet Mig-29s flew in formation; at the extremes of their range they took aim at two Eagles and two Tornados and fired an R-27R each. Though the odds of hitting a friendly where high, it wouldn’t be possible to make it in time anyway. The pilots hoped the NATO planes would break and let him go.

Cody's RWR told him first that their was a new threat, and as he countered it'd shot a missile at him. The pilot reacted carefully and quickly, deploying chaff and keeping his fighter's energy up. Leaving his first kill to tumble to Earth, he climbed rapidly to get above threat and out of the radar-guided weapon's cone of guidance. He dropped a little more chaff and considered going back to his AIM-7s. He decided to after forming a plan.

Havoc in the meantime made a wide right turn after dumping his countermeasures, coming back around at the MiGs from their right flank. The two F-15s aimed to force the flight apart and keep it confused until they had a good angle. Cody also hoped that the Tornadoes would get into the fight soon enough. With his second division down he wasn't well equipped to be this aggressive For long. As he crept into Sparrow range, the man fired his remaining radar-guided weapons from above the formation.

"Blaster 2-1, Fox 1, Fox 1." He said.

"Blaster, this is Sabre 1-1. Me and 2-1 are moving in on the Fulcrums." Robert radioed the F-15 driver as he and his wingman closed in on the MiG-29s' left flank.

"This is Sabre 3-1, me and 4-1 are going to act as bait for the MiGs so you and Blaster take them down." Sabre 3-1 suggested as he and the No. 4 Tornado made a deceptive turn away from the Fulcrums.

"Alright. Be careful." Robert replied as he and Sabre 2 continued to close on the enemy formation.

"1-1, We've got a lock for a Skyflash shot." Elenora told her front seater.

"Right. Time to squeeze these bastards in. Sabre 1-1! Fox One!" Robert replied and called out as he fired a Skyflash missile at one of the Fulcrums.

"Sabre 2-1! Fox One!" Robert and Elenora's wingman radioed as he too fired a Skyflash at one of the other MiGs.

The ZSU's barrage was about as impotent as their rage, as the two F-111s were already masked by the terrain.

The pucker factor increased slightly when the MiG-23 fired on them, but they were so low that the R-23 could not distinguish them from the ground clutter, meaning the missile fell harmlessly behind them.  The close call was still enough to warrant Subha radioing the escorts, "Hey, you guys mind maybe covering our asses?  These MiGs are getting a wee bit close for comfort."

The Mig-29's continued forward they began to evade, however the Mig at the extreme right of the flight was a bit too sluggish, an AIM-7 exploded not far from it damaging the plane. Though still in control the pilot turned around and ran. The remaining Fulcrums continued forward to engage.

    ------

Doberman Two had been forgotten, he was home free. However his wingmen were dead, he wanted to avenge his friends or die with them! The Fulcrums had fought for him, now he was going to help them. He hit his afterburner and began to gain altitude, in the distance he could see the allied aircraft. He fired one of his R-27's at one of the eagles and hoped it would give the Migs time to close the distance.

    ------

Pinscher flight wasn't having much luck hunting the F-111s, all they managed to due was waste missiles. the F-111 though larger than the MIG-23 was faster, but its strike had forced the aircraft to slow down and turn letting the lead Mig get close enough to fire an R-60 at the slightly damaged f-111.

"Two!" Cody snapped at Havoc upon hearing the Aardvarks' cry for help.

"Blaster 2-2, Fox 2, Fox 2." The air force pilot called, unleashing two AIM-9s.

He made a slashing attack at the Fulcrums from the right, screaming over the RAF fighters before turning again and streaking towards the beleaguered fighter-bombers. The pilot decided to keep his remaining heatseekers for the Fulcrums and selected an AIM-7. The ground clutter would be a problem but oh well, he could get in close and gun the guy.

"Blaster 2-2, Fox 1." He said as he fired a Sparrow.

In the meantime Cody rolled so he could follow the Fulcrums below when they passed. At the same time, his AIM-9s had taken a liking to the heat emanating from the fighters, especially in the night. He slowed to give them a bit of time to lock and felt just how much adrenaline was surging through his lanky frame at the moment. With an almost smug grin, he fired once at the lead jet.

"Blaster 2-1, Fox 2!" He drawled.

"Get some, Ivan." The man chuckled to himself once off the air.
