    Best/Worst Ace Combat Level Ever

Post by Jason The Salt on Mon Jul 20, 2015 6:57 pm

I would like to poll people here for an idea what is the best and worst Ace Levels.

I do think that a few categories would be in order to help get a better picture.
One quick rule, For all categories, no "Gunner" Levels including the Door Gunner and AC-130 Levels

1]Best Early level (First Half of an Ace Game)

    1}Worst early Level

2] Best Late Game Level (Second Half of an Ace Game)

    2} Worst Late Game Level

3]Best Boss (Ace and Super weapon)

    3}Worst Boss

4] Best Level per Generation (PS1, PS2, Portable, and Current Gen)

4}Worst Level Per Generation (PS1, PS2, Portable, and Current Gen)

5]Best Level Total (Every and all Ace Games, no limit)

    5} Worst Level Total

I hope you will answer to the best of your ability : D

1a)  Lifeline from AC04.  Nails the feeling of an effective counter push, and the appearance of Yellow Squadron takes it over the top.

1b) Mother Goose One.  Seriously fuck this mission.

2a) Sea of Chaos maybe?  Because delicious boats? Or Liberation from AC04

2b) Final Option.  I play Ace Combat to blow crap up, not run away without the ability to shoot ANYTHING.

    3a) Not sure.

    3b) Sulejmani

    4a) PS1:  Can't say.

4b)  PS1:  Can't say.  PS2:  Final Option.  Portable:  Can't say.  Current:  last mission of ACAH

5a)  Can't think of a top favorite, but top 3 would be Bunker Shot, Sea of Chaos, San Loma.

5b)  Does half of AC5 count?

1] Hard to choose, my top two contenders would be B7R from Ace Combat Zero and Lifeline from Ace Combat 04. Both strike me as memorable because of the introduction of a rival ace unit (Yellow for AC04, Rot/ Grun/ Indigo for ACZ) along with a great set up for the mission.

        b) A three way tie between Tango Line, Mother Goose One, and White Bird Part 1.

2] a) Seige of Farbanti, Zero, and Fighters Honor in a three way tie.

        b) .... I DESPISE SAFE RETURN FROM ACE COMBAT 04 WITH A PASSION!

3] a) Pixy, you actually had to use strategy in the fight. Predictable strategy yes, but at least more thought than "Chase the enemy, fire missile, hope it connects and boss doesn't Pugachev on it."

        b) Markov, bullshit on rails cinematic boss fight is bullshit.

4] a)  PS1, I wouldn't know, I never played the original PS1 titles;  PS2, Zero and Megalith in a tie; 3DS, Fighter's Honor hands down; and.... admittedly I had fun at the Round Table the first time around in ACI)

        b) PS1, again I wouldn't know, I never played the original PS1 titles; PS2, SAFE RETURN!!!!; Portable, can't say for sure; PS3, Hostile Fleet... being on rails to sink ships is BULLSHIT! I can respect making the ships harder to take down, but adding fake difficulty via controls while piloting aircraft that manuever like a lathargic donkey on sleep meds is bullshit.

5] a)  Megalith and Zero in a tie

        b) Either Safe Return or Hostile Fleet

Okay so I'm going to go off of AC games that I have actually played: (AC4, ACZ, ACX, ACAH, AC6). I'll probably have multiple entries for each section.

Best Early Level: It's a tie between Operation Constantine (the liberation of Ustio's capital in Zero) and Comona. Constantine for the setting of the mood with the Ustian citizens rising up as Cipher wrecks the Belkans and the triumphant music (the soundtrack that plays for the first part of the level is at least in the top twenties for me), plus the boss fight with Gelb which can be more challenging than it has any right to be that early in the game.

Comona because its a straight aerial brawl with both sides evenly matched (The Eruseans have the Yellows, ISAF has you) on a scale that has never been matched in Ace Combat since sadly. The largest air battles in 5 and 6 have you heavily outnumbered, and Zero's Mayhem looses points for the relative uselessness of your Allies.

Worst Early Level: Glatisant in Zero because everything is so spaced out plus I remember having so much trouble with this level back in the day. God help you if you pick a particularly slow plane like the A-10. Nightmare from Assault Horizon because the level consists almost entirely of tutorials that you can't even skip. From ACX Time Limit. Fuck this level seriously, of all times NOW you want to implement g-forces Project Aces.

Best Late Game Level: Farbanti from 4 is awesome, you're finally sticking it too the Eruseans in one final battle, the targets clusters are better connected than in Whiskey Corridor for one thing, plus a final climactic battle with Yellow Squadron to top things off.

Worst Late Game Level: Out of the games I play, I don't particularly have a "Worst" late level. Some I like less than others (WAY less in the case of Weapons of Mass Destruction in 6).

Best Boss: Oh man in no particular order: Pixy, Stongehenge, Aigaion, Hostile Fleet (I honestly feel like this counts because a lot of the main vessels including that last Battlecruiser take damage that would make a lot of the super weapons blush), Gelb, Gault, and Yellow Squadron at Farbanti.

    Worst Boss

Markov (all of the battles with him): This is what people talk about when people say ACAH forces you into DFM. You HAVE to use it to even fight him.

Pasternak: It wouldn't be so bad if there weren't all those little drones buzzing around.

Rot: Because they are entirely too easy to beat no matter what the aircraft you fly.

I can't really answer 4 and 5 because I haven't played enough of the games. So there you go.

That's because modern day missile cruisers ARE real life superweapons.  XD

Best Early Level: I'd have to say it was Narrow Margin, especially after I was able to go back and play it with naval aircraft. It was one of those levels where you had lots of allies and also appealed to my NAVAIR tastes.  It was also before the story got too deep so things were pretty no-frills. That and it's one of the few times the E-2 Hawkeye shows up in the game.

Worst Early Level: Three's mission "Fragile Cargo" is the one I classify as worst, as any other levels I was just not using the best aircraft. The landing on the Anea mainland is not a favorite of mine cause of DJ Zed. >_>

Best Late Game Level: AC4's Whiskey Corridor, surprisingly, both because of the music and the combined arms aspect. I torn it up so much in my A-10; it was almost like I was fighting in ODS.

Worst Late Game Level: Journey Home in AC5, and you all know why. TT~TT

Solitare from AC5 and Siege from ACAH also come to mind. Solitare because the camera was rather touchy; to this day I got the right shots from pure luck. Siege's biggest sin is when those IL-76s are landing, because they cane go poof at a second's notice it seems.

Best Boss: I'd say Pixy. He was the one that gave me the biggest challenge and had the most personality. Illich gets an honorable mention for dragging me into a hurricane.

Worst Boss: The Arkbird. Fuck that thing and its lasers as well as its speed; By the time I killed it I don't know how many time I'd restarted the mission. Now when I play it, I fly the ADF-01.

The last two would be hard for me to answer cause some games I was just okay with most of the levels; nothing was really my favorite.

I would prefer if all the questions could be answered, regardless of ace experience. Multiple answers are okay.

    That's technically true!

Though I could have done with less getting riddled by invisible bullets.

Well keep in mind that most ammo belts are loaded at a ratio of four or more regular rounds to one tracer.  So for every round you DO see there are 4 you don't.  XD

The good old best and worst levels question. Well since I have too many to pick from; I am going to go with one mission each just to keep things simple.

Best Early Mission: For me it's "Deep Strike" from Ace Combat 04, the mission has you penetrating deep into enemy controlled territory to flatten infrastructure vital to their war effort. Flying a Tornado IDS with the MW1 equipped fits this mission perfectly. The surprise strike by Stonehenge forcing you into a ravine while being chased by enemy fighters is the icing on the cake for this mission. Did I mention the soundtrack for both phases of the mission is awesome?

Worst Early Mission: "Enter Dision" from Ace Combat 3: Electrosphere, this game seriously has the nerve to force you into a situation where you play follow the leader and then some rather boring aerial gunnery and ground target practice sessions followed by more gunnery practice firing at cargo containers dropped from a transport. That said "Physical Layer" is an excellent BGM track and provides energy to an otherwise boring mission.

Best Late Game Mission: Whiskey Corridor; once you get past the length of the mission and the need to trudge halfway across the map for rearming/repairs it's an awesome mission. As Ronin said it makes you feel like you are participating in Operation Desert Storm. I've cleared this level countless times with the F-16C, F-15E, and A-10A tearing up tanks, fighters, and defensive positions with glee. The BGM for this mission is extremely memorable too with it's epic tone.

Worst Late Game Mission: "Sentinel" from Ace Combat 2. Ace Combat 2 is one of my favorite AC games of all time and yet this mission always finds a way to piss me off. I love flying into narrow ass Fjords and taking out radar dishes all while I have every YF-22 or F-117 in the area up my ass plus radar jamming. Edge why aren't you doing your job? Hilf Mir! Hilf Mi-*explosion.*

Best Boss: "Heavy Command Cruiser" from Ace Combat 6: Fires of Liberation. You aren't just tasked with taking out one aerial battleship. No. You have an entire fleet and hostile escorts to deal with. You have to put up with a laundry list of various defenses before you finally get to the big prize and damn can it be challenging on Hard or Expert. Based on what I have seen, Ace of Aces cranks it up to eleven and laughs at you. I am particularly fond of the introduction music to this level as it provides this buildup to the big fight.

Worst Boss: Arkbird for various reasons. You thought you could get away with just shooting it down? Think again. Drones that decide to accelerate to mach four before coming back to make a surprise tailpipe exam on you, the Arkbird itself banking on your ass when the crazy Nazi's inside decide they want to detonate the nuke over Osean territory, and that annoying ass pulse laser.
Breaking my rule of keeping it to one mission. Milosz Sulejmani has a special place in my heart for being one of my most reviled video game characters ever and for good reason. The last boss fight is a fine example of bad design and padding out a fight with physics breaking bullshit. Markov takes a quick second place as the only good QTE fight I ever had was with Jack Krauser in RE4. His was just stupid.

The last three questions are hard for me to answer despite playing every Ace Combat game on console.
