"Yes General...yes I understand...No he died shortly after ejection they believe...It may be a good idea to...no I understand that too, General. We'll get to work on it as soon as we have the reports from the units involved and can give them a proper debriefing."

Ekaterina sighed after the phone was securely hung up and clutched the sides of her head. This entire situation had thrown Cinnigrad into an uproar and her little part of the VVS was now doing what the GRU probably should've been doing. No doubt Nikanor, his supporters and his detractors were all reaching new levels of stupid, too. She looked at the last draft of the report being compiled on this, the fifth draft to be exact. Her superiors were prying for things that couldn't be found right now or at all. She wanted to shout at someone, but...

"Afternoon, Little Lady." A soft drawl said.

The blonde looked up as a familiar pilot took off the hat she'd given him and set down a sealed folder with a gentle smile. The same smile she got to wake up to a billion times, the same smile that made her feel happy.

"At the risk of a harassment charge, may Ah say y'all look like yah need yer man?" He added. Ekaterina balled her fists, still sitting on the table, and nodded.

"In the folder is VF-138's reports on the events of 27 March, 2025 concerning the incident over Fedayor Valley. As VF-138's Det. Tiger XO and the squadron's Operations JO, Ah will offer any and all help needed." He added.

"Thank you, Lieutenant Walker." Ekaterina managed. He nodded in understanding.

"Oy, who's in command around here?!" He called over his shoulder in accented Yuktobanian.

"The Major's currently at Military District Air Command." Ekaterina explained in Osean. He looked at her.

"Alright then, he won't care if we get something to eat." Mark declared.

Brokering no further protests and giving a quick explanation to one of her assistants, who only nodded at the towering pilot (and agreed she was due to get her lunch), Mark walked Ekaterina out and into the quieter halls where she could think. She grabbed his hand and tugged at it. He looked back at her and she jerked her head towards a short hall that led to a pair of water fountains. She glanced behind him when they were at the end and then seized the pilot for the briefest of moments to give him several desperate kisses.

"I was so worried..." she choked out.

"Don't cry, Ekaterina, don't cry. Ah'm here...Ah'm in one piece and Ah'm here." He said. She swallowed her tears and looked up at him. Mark took her hands and pulled her close. The two stood in embrace and silence for a while until Mark decided he'd rather she be happy first, worried later.

"All Ah could think about was y'all when Ah got back...Hey, remember that night back in Port Patterson? When y'all told me how yah liked it how Ah could get drunk on yah?" He asked. She blushed and nodded.

"Kat Ah'm always drunk on y'all." He smiled. Ekaterina couldn't hold back a smile after a minute.

"Oh shut up." She smirked. He grinned.

    "Works every time."

The two regained their professional composure and decided to go get lunch like they'd declared. Ekaterina snuck in one quick grab of his rear, though, throwing a wink the blushing Lieutenant's way.

"Ya rad, chto ty vsegda p'yan na menya, Marky~" She purred.

"Unfortunately this one didn't have the jamming pod, Comrade Major." Ekaterina told Major Lebedjev. The man sat back in his chair and folded his arms.

"Well then I see no reason to worry over this any longer, Comrade Lieutenant. This was a border incident, and nothing less. The aircraft with the jammer pods escaped our grasp and I'm in no position to try and grab them." He said in an almost robotic manner. The man absentmindedly tapped a box of Osean cigarettes and then let out a breath.

"Okay Comrade Lieutenant, I won't keep you any longer. Get some rest before your next shift at 0500." He said. Ekaterina nodded quickly.

"Understood, thank you Comrade Major." She said.

The two exchanged salutes and Ekaterina left, heels clicking rhythmically. Lebedjev sighed and sat back, just as tired as his subordinate. They'd really grilled him at District Command. He'd gotten a message through, though. Kostanitov, that Nikanor boot licker, understood (in no small part due to one General Vasili Yagov) that when important things happened, they would be relayed. Constantly harassing the intel department at Tiger would only ensure something slipped up.

The Major had no illusions that this was only the beginning; the Veruseans were too proud a people. They wanted revenge against Yuktobania's rise and they would wreck themselves to get it...almost like the Belkans had. But all he could do was analyze patterns, make judgement and give advice. Despite all that, a reluctant part of him wanted this to be the end. He looked towards the door where Ekaterina had come from and frowned. All the young, bright-eyed kids around this base certainly wouldn't like to see how bitterly the Yuktobanians waged war.

The lights dimmed as Misaki stood up front and watched the pilots gathered for a minute. This time she didn't feel as nervous, again reminding herself it was just like giving a lecture to her class. When things came up, she cleared her throat and assumed a firm, confident stance with her hands behind her back.

    Mission Two: Shootout At 30-55!
    March 29, 2025 (Local Time: 1300)
    Southwest Pacific

    Briefing:
The events of the March 27th have brought about tangible results. The Veruseans have, alongside blaming us for the incident, have increased their military movements. Early this morning we received word that the Verusean 10th Airborne Division was mobilized from its base at Vnodonik. In addition, we’ve seen an increase in Verusean air defenses around their forward most units. Over the past two days, two more incidents have occurred in which coalition aircraft have drawn Verusean fire. More concerning is the naval situation: the Verusean Navy (Verusean Federal Naval Flotilla) has begun to increase its sortie rate. Satellite imagery along with intercepts from ELINT aircraft have confirmed the Veruseans are deploying an increased number of frigates and destroyers as well as submarines. There are also several intercepts suggesting Verusea may be planning to carry out smuggling operations, most likely to sneak in special operations forces.
This is where we come in. As per the overall strategy of policing the border, we’ve been rotated to a new area. Today we’ll be flying off the coast of Tara in support of the OFS James Wellington (CVN-34) carrier battle group. At the moment, The Wellington CVBG is conducting maritime security and peacekeeping operations in the Southwest Pacific. We’ll be providing extra cover for them while they and Yuktobanian naval aviation assets monitor Verusean naval traffic and intercept attempts by Verusa to smuggle individuals and weapons into Yuktobania. Our primary job will be protecting two IL-38 “May” patrol aircraft in the area and providing top cover should any confrontations between us and Verusa occur. Additionally, we’ll also be on call to maintain the security of the border.
Any unidentified ships or ships of the Verusean Navy will be intercepted by both us and the Wellington CVBG. We’ll be called upon to identify ships, and possibly engage them should they display hostile intent. Unidentified ships, namely those that could be used for smuggling or incursion operations, will be stopped and boarded to be searched. Osean ships and helicopters belonging to the group are authorized to fire warning shots across their bow should they fail to stop after being ordered to do so. Should the need arise the carrier has several aircraft on the deck to be launched in response. We’ve been informed they’ll have a fourship of F-21s armed for CAP, a pair of F-35s armed with Anti-Ship Missiles, two F-35s configured as tankers, a pair of E/A-18Gs armed for SEAD, and an E-2 to relieve the one aloft. The carrier and her assets will also have several MH-60 Knighthawks on call to provide Search and Rescue. Good luck.

    Weather and Terrain:
It’s a little cooler today, 68 degrees Fahrenheit (20 degrees Celsius). However a weather system is moving up the coast, resulting in heavier cloud cover than your previous mission. Expect a solid layer of clouds at 14,000 feet, with scattered pockets of moderate rain below. The seas are also rough due to the system, meaning that if downed you may experience difficulties while the Wellington or one of the nearby escorts deploys a helicopter to rescue you.

Misaki looked over at Kat, who nodded.

"While we want to give you some kind of pattern to the Verusean Navy's movements, we cannot see any yet. This activity is new. We can, however, warn you about any smuggling vessels. It's likely the Veruseans will have SA-27s and large caliber firearms on any vessels they're trying to move up the coasts. Watch your altitude." She explained. The VVS officer looked at Misaki.

"I believe we'll also have a different chain of command for this, Misaki?" She asked. Eric's girlfriend nodded and referred to her notes.

"This area is effectively under the command of Admiral Carter Dodge and the Wellington's battlegroup. All actions will be monitored, cleared, and coordinated by the Battlegroup Commander; callsign "Alpha Bravo", the Battlewatch Captain; callsign "Mama Bird", and the Air Group Commander; callsign "CAG" or "Mad Dog"." She announced.

Smiles broke out around VF-138's neck of the woods. Good ol' CAG...

Ekaterina stepped up as her part of the briefing came about. She tapped the projector screen with a pointer.

"The ROE has not changed, but there is a new thing for you all to remember. The JW has declared an exclusion zone that goes from the carrier to the outer perimeter 100 Miles out. Anything that isn't supposed to enter that zone will first be warned, then intercepted within the current ROE, and then blown away. In this case we don't need to wait for hostile actions to shoot but Alpha Bravo must give clearance." Ekaterina explained.

A sense of familiarity washed over the detachment from VF-138 with the mission. It was well within their abilities to support maritime security and CAP was their fore. The ROE hadn't been updated and they were basically going back to the JW to do what they usually did. Kat saw the looks in their eyes, especially Mark's. He looked like he was going back to Fairemont. She kept a smile back; something about him looking all happy like that didn't sit well with her. She didn't want to relive the morning he was called to go fight Sapin.

Misaki was a bit less apprehensive. It was in Eric's nature to be cocky and she'd come to accept it for better or worse. Besides, she reasoned confidence was good. Eric had gone to long beating himself up. To see him charged up for what he loved to do was good. The Osean pilots had no questions until Mark did raise his hand.

"No ASMs on the shore?" He asked.

"Not that we've seen; it appears the Veruseans do want to avoid inflaming the situation further, or at least too fast." Ekaterina said with a shake of her head. She looked at the others.

"Any other questions?" She asked. She got silence, which led her to nod.

"Then good luck, everyone." She said in a firm but confident tone. The room was dismissed.

    April 2, 2025 (Local Time: 2304)
    Intel Department
    Tiger NAFB

Ekaterina shuffled through the images taken from a Persona spy satellite one more time in hopes of making her last hour on shift go by faster. The latest in a series of rather similar images, the GRU and Yuktobanian military nonetheless were interested in having the most up-to-date intel they could get. Besides the real-time gathering going on inside "The Icebox" in the underground level of the facility, recon satellites made passes twice a day. These photos were only a few hours old.

The Veruseans had placed eight mechanized divisions near the border, along with a host of supporting units from air defense to personnel from the country's version of her homeland's Strategic Missile Troops. In comparison the Oseans had three major formations in country: the 25th Cavalry Division, the 29th Infantry Division, and Task Force Bastok. Her own country had deployed three divisions 32nd Guards Tank, 18th Motor Rifle, and 3rd Tank Division) and several independent units to, like the others involved, support the main formations. Belka also had one Panzer Division deployed in the west of Tara.

Strangely though, their air and sea power's dispersion had changed little. The Veruseans had never been to strong at sea as it was, and she could deduce that with Osean interest in the conflict they were at a bigger disadvantage on the seas. The positioning of their aircraft still had her confused, though. Perhaps it was because the Kalugans and Romns were now starting to line up their troops. That was another matter that had to be addressed now: Verusa's allies. She'd been thankfully granted mercy from having to take that part on as well; it'd actually gone to Osean assets in the area and other parts of the Yuktobanian intel apparatus.

As she was looking at an image of several DF-11s, she heard a low, warbling wail somewhere outside. Ekaterina raised her head and looked around. Across the room, at the far wall, a red light came on and began to flash. A speaker then came on, drawing the attention of all in the room.

"Attention all personnel, attention all personnel...report to your raid stations immediately. This is NOT a drill, this is NOT a drill." a voice called.

Ekaterina felt her face tighten but her body reacted by standing up and grabbing a leather briefcase. She opened it and stuffed several sealed envelopes into the case, along with other documents. The woman hurried around her desk, moving as fast as her heels could carry her. She felt her phone vibrate in her hand and looked at it. Mark had contacted her. She stopped just outside the room as other intel personnel ran by to check it.

    April 2 (2307)
    To: Me

Stay safe love; I love you and I'll be back soon.

She forced a smile before hurrying down the hall towards the elevator to the SCIF under the building. She texted back her love and returned to thinking about the situation at hand.
