    Ace Combat: Northern Thunder

    Backstory

In July 2040, a startling discovery is made. An employee at Neucom Incorporated, Justin Dylan, releases what becomes known as the “Corporate War Simulation” after discovering it prior to deletion. This leads to the “Usean Corporate Scandal” in August of the same year. The United Nations meets on August 8, 2040 to decide the matter. Under massive pressure from a number of members, the decision is made to take control of the continent from both Neucom and General Resource Limited. In the year that follows, the continent becomes dominated by a new nation: The Imperial Erusean Alliance. Any hopes of a new ISAF are dashed, and the rest of the continent is occupied by neutral nations. The country eats up a majority of the resources left by Neucom and GR, who are essentially dismantled following the scandal. The country fancies itself an aristocracy able to keep in tune with the times. Massive programs are instituted to secure the country’s future by 2041.

By late 2044 the Imperial Erusean Alliance is beginning to run out of money, and needs resources to keep itself afloat. It also looks to take its place on the world stage. Both those requirements can be satisfied by The Republic of Nordlands. Nordlands is among the world’s top suppliers of oil and natural gas, and this allows it to solve most of its problems by influencing its supply to the world. The Erusean Imperial Military, armed with some of the best weapons on the planet, believes it should be a cakewalk. In late 2045, they invade the Nordlands and force the Nordic Defense Force to retreat well into the interior of the country. The UN immediately responds by gathering the world’s major nations to counter the juggernaut that is Erusea. If not stopped, the Eruseans may not only take Nordlands, but move on to other countries as well. The next major war has arrived in Strangereal…

    Rules

Welcome to Ace Combat: Northern Thunder! Hopefully you’re reading this after having read the backstory, because it’s a requirement that you read and understand the rules before going off and filling an OC sheet. So read on for the rules of this RP. Northern Thunder is an RP that takes place well in the future and relies heavily on retro sci-fi elements, the kind of stuff you see in older entries in Ghost in the Shell, Patlabor, and the early Alien franchise. Hopefully that keeps you reading.

-First and foremost, no god-modding. God-modding, as a refresher, is any action that outright ignores moves by enemy forces or causes mass results with little effort. It’s obvious, we know, we know, but it still needs to be on the record. Don’t do it. We don’t want people trying to be the next incarnation of Mobius One or something in a minute’s time. Do it once and we’ll warn you (followed by an editing of said god-modding). Do it twice and we’ll just kick you, no questions asked. This includes taking control of NPC forces in any way without permission (which is one of the quickest ways to displease the GM of this little venture). You have been warned.

-In combat, expect some realism here, boys n girls. Be mindful how you fight and don't expect that spamming AMRAAMs will get you kill upon kill. At the same time, don’t start complaining, it isn't all bad (this is Ace Combat, after all). This RP will play like a game of AC on Normal difficulty and usually missiles will miss if you make an attempt to evade. But again, think. React to your enemy and choose the course of action that keeps you and your buddy alive.

-Damage and being shot down. Inevitably in our Ace Combat careers, we’re all hit or watch in frustration as our jet goes down in flames. In Northern Thunder none of us are invincible, and I hate to say it but you may be shot down or hit at one point or another. So how does damage work in this? Well, it kinda depends on the hit you take and your aircraft. Again this is balanced out by the fact that defender determines whether an attack hits. However when you are hit, factors such as the weapon that hit you and your plane will determine the outcome. Small, light jets are vulnerable and big or powerful weapons can do a lot of damage. For example’s sake, an F-16 will be more badly damaged if it takes an SA-20 (220lb warhead) than if it takes an AIM-9 (20lb warhead). In short small jets will only sustain about three hits max from most weapons while larger, "tougher" aircraft may take several hits to go down.

-Each turn, you are allowed to attack up to four targets (like the games let you). This is to avoid people saturating, say, an entire company of tanks with AGMs or shooting at an entire bomber formation. Seriously guys don’t be the dude who wants to gobble up all the kills.

-One nice thing is that even if you are shot down and captured you cannot be killed and will be returned to the UN in a reasonable amount of time thanks to our daring off-screen Special Forces! However, if you want to kill off a character for some reason, just be sure to make it clear in the OOC lounge. Only you can kill your own characters.

-Do not start crap with other RPers on the Northern Thunder forum section. If for some reason you want to lock horns with someone, we have a chat and a PM system. But seriously, don’t. We won’t like you for it.

-As far as characters go, you are not allowed to play canon characters. You can be part of canon squads, though this has had mixed results in my experience, but no playing Cipher or Tailsman or Edge or anyone like that. Mods and select people may play certain canon roles, if they are included, but these characters will have a strictly non-combat role.

-Plane choice can be grounds for your OC being turned down. Only a certain number of original designs have been accepted prior to booting up this RP and only a few more will be accepted after we start. Certain canon superplanes will be allowed, as this is 2045, but this will be done on a case-by-case basis. Additionally, certain weapons will not be allowed on ANY aircraft, such as the TLS, ADMM, and LSWM to keep balance. Use of unauthorized weapons or aircraft will fall under god modding, only difference being said offending weapon is stripped from you immediately.

-Weapons are also a matter that require a rule all their own, since this is 2045. The few original weapons that will be considered must not be overpowered for the same reason certain weapons will not be allowed at all. Lasers, if you insist on using them, will be downgraded to a few shots, as powerful as an aircraft’s gun, and must fire in a straight line. Feel free to ask regarding weapons at any time.

-BE ACTIVE. Seriously guys, tell us if real life is getting in the way and when you are playing, post. We don’t want to be waiting thinking you’re gonna post when you’ve gone totally AWOL. If you just disappear, we’ll move on without you.

    -Keep it PG-13

-Penalties can include being barred from being in missions, “support duties” such as buddy tanking or unarmed photo-recon, or being banned from the RP. Sites rules, as would be expected, still apply.

Allied Forces (Task Force Polaris/Nordic Defense Forces)

    Overview:
The Nordic Defense Force is the national military and police force of the Republic of Nordlands. While not a large or heavily equipped force due to their role as defenders of the nation’s territory and keeper of its order, the NDF is motivated and well-trained. This is mostly due to a “mountaineer” mentality amongst all members of the NDF, from which they view themselves as masters of their harsh environment. The NDF is centered around using the country’s terrain to defend, so it relies on heavier armor and troop deployment methods that allow for positions to be filled quickly. The air force weighs heavily of fighter and multirole aircraft supported by sophisticated air-defense systems on the ground, while the navy is centered around patrol vessels and other light ships. Every man and woman in Nordlands ages 18-45 who has already served their mandatory three years in the military and left is placed on reservist status, meaning they may be recalled in case of a national emergency.

Task Force Polaris has been organized by major members of the UN to combat the Erusean invasion of the Eastern Osean Continent following UN Resolution 7318. The size of the task force is such to defeat the Erusean military, and the equipment, morale, and training of the soldiers in it vary by country and contribution. Polaris’s primary purpose is to act as a maneuver group, since the NDF does not have the means to take up the mission. The primary players in the task force are Osea, Belka, Emmeria, Sapin, and Yuktobania.

    Enemy Forces (Erusean Imperial Military)

    Overview:
The Erusean Imperial Military (EIM) is the official title of the armed forces of the country. Styled very much in a combination of older fascist and monarchist regimes, the military has quickly established a hierarchy and strict code of honor. Men and women of the EIM see themselves as near-perfect warriors, free from being weighed down by pride (though they will show it) and tightly bonded. The EIM is incredibly motivated and despite seeing no combat, has trained hard to develop itself into a modern fighting force that can defend its assets and function as an expeditionary force. Soldiers are taught to seek any way to cause harm to the enemy. Like Nordlands, ever male (in this case ages 17-50) can be called to service in case of an emergency. However, the rush of patriotism that is in the country has kept regular military numbers high. As of right now, service is not mandatory.

Armed with an expansive amount of weaponry and having taken many of the advanced technologies left behind by Neucom and GR, the Eruseans have expanded and despite the need for resources, they are not hurting. All of its branches ultimately report to the king of Erusea and even loyalty to their unit commanders is an extension of this. They are known for being strict, but not inhumane to their enemies. They also have employed several soldiers who once served in other militaries, such as General Danny BaRoue, formerly of the South African Army, and Prince/General Hossin Rhashi, ex-Shamlaki Royal Army.

ACNT AIR POSTS FOR THE OPFOR WILL BE MADE BY THE GM (RONIN) EVERY SATURDAY. THIS MEANS YOU HAVE ONE WEEK TO POST BETWEEN EACH OPFOR POST. I'LL OCCASIONALLY MAKE EXCEPTIONS IF NO ONE HAS POSTED.
