    Hunter Flight
    November 24, 2045 (Local Time: 2030)
    Central Nordlands

Gordon's wingman never really saw the AIM-120 that got him. He was at first more concerned with the AIM-154 that'd been fired as he and his flight lead broke off their attack and decided that two versus six was a bad idea. The AIM-154 had taken up most of his attention and he deployed chaff and jinked hard, exploiting the weakness of any radar guided-weapon: its inability to follow prolonged, hard maneuvering. That gave the AIM-120 a shot; by the time Hunter E1-2 had exhausted his first pursuer, he was low on energy and distracted despite his AI's warnings.

Gordon, who'd managed to shrug off his pursuing AIM-154 and get away with nothing more than a rattled plane, saw the fireball at his three o' clock. He felt his teeth clench as he dove down to the terrain, hit afterburners for a good, solid minute, and then screeched away into the sky, leaving the fight far behind. He'd be going home alone again today; despite himself Gordon was getting tired of that.

The flight split as the RWR told them they had four AMRAAMs inbound. Their thrust towards the UN aircraft and their beleaguered friends turned into a swirling mix of jets moving to evade and escape the weapons. In the meantime their enemy fled them. Centrum was theirs for the taking now; the word went back to the transports, and then to the two Erusean agents who'd been watching the whole thing and coordinating the faux SAMs and the jammers. The CFAs, as they slowly got their heads back together, started to move towards CAP positions around the airport. They would then have a corridor through which the XC-01s would pass to deploy the paras.

    Blizzard Strike Lead
    November 24, 2045 (Local Time: 2031)
    Central Nordlands

The pilot of the F-16XA kept a close watch on the terrain as it flew by. They were four minutes from Centrum Korsing, but the threat of UN fighters still lingering sent the heavily-loaded Falcons down to the deck. They would have to hope their escorts would be able to chase off any enemy fighters that were still hanging around the area. His wings were heavy with JDAMs and air-to-ground missiles. They weren't expecting anything, but they had UAVs to the west, looking for trouble.

As he came over a ridge, the leader of "Blizzard Strike", the multi-type package moving in to support the seizing of the airport, could see the long columns of oily smoke. The entirety of the place seemed to be covered in one black cloud, with flames occasionally come from the shroud. The two agents who'd been observing were long gone to avoid smoke inhalation.

"Uh Tower, do we have anything on hand to fight this fire? It's burning pretty fiercrely." He radioed. There was a dumbfounded pause before a reply.

"We'll see what we can do, Blizzard Lead."

He sure hoped they could do something. In the meantime, the F-16XAs broke to the left and moved towards their station to the south of the airport.

Noticing her wingman turning in the wrong direction, Peaches snarled over the radio, "Three, what the fuck?  We're RTB!"

Acknowledging the AWACS, Hellhound Lead called out to the rest of his flight.

"Hounds, you heard the AWACS. We're withdrawing. Spikes, Otaku fire the last of your AMRAAM's and peel off. We'll stay at your six."

"Copy Lead. Hellhound Three, Fox Three." Gisele replied, firing her last missile in sequence with Victor who barked out his last shot of the mission. The two medium range missiles ripping away towards the enemy. With that action, the two fighters altered their course and made a break for safer airspace. In the meantime Naomi and Erich who were at higher altitude fired the last of their missiles before turning away to withdraw.

    "Hellhound Two, Fox Three!"

    "Hellhound One, Fox Three."

"Time bug out Nomad, keep it tight and don't stray."

    "Wilco Lead."

Riley dragged the F-02 into a hefty right turn, back in the direction of base.

"Roger that 4, got a bit distracted. Will form on you."

    **

Rocketing by the flaming wreckage of the Nosferatu, Karhila noted the retreating allied fighters.

"Let's leave them a gift. Fire off your remaining missiles, then we're getting out of here." he said.

Leveling out, Karhila locked onto one of the transports. Loosing the remaining missile, he saw two more streak over his shoulder, heading to the enemy CAP.

    "Let's get out of here!"

Rolling out to the left, the fighters turned for home.

    Guardian Flight
    November 24, 2045 (Local Time: 2032)
    Central Nordlands

The AMRAAMs from Hellhound had been launched as Guardian was split and settling into CAPs. It caused another ripple in them, breaking apart what few CAPs had been established and sending the CFAs in various directions like a school of fish. This time it would be Giselle and Erich that scored. One of the Erusean jets, maneuvering so he wouldn't hit the jets around him, was slowly being cornered by Giselle's hot. Finally the pilot was forced to break and dive for the deck. With no space to maneuver down further, he was forced to pull back up and try and get above the AIM-120's path of flight. The pilot also deployed chaff to try and add to the chances of escape. The missile was too close, though, too close to be fooled at the last second. The weapon detonated against the plane's belly and sent the CFA sliding backwards towards the ground. As the nose swung around, the pilot ejected.

Erich's kill was scored just in time. The CFA he'd engaged broke from its CAP station and then snapped back to the left towards the F-25 to try and make a snapshot with one of its remaining AP-13 at the leader of Hellhound Flight. The pilot also deployed chaff to confuse the missile. He planned to at least scare the attacking Taipan off; keeping the airport secure was the first priority. As he turned and started going for a lock, the missile struck the jet nearly head-on and stopped it almost butt-cold. The jet seemed to slow, and then float down like a leaf.

The final kill of the day would go to Haukka's Number Two. They struck a CFA-44 that'd avoided Naomi's shot. The plane went high and fast, up towards the AIM-154 as it came down after going up to attain long range. With the rocket motor burnt out, the only warning the Nosferatu pilot got was the blaring of his ECM, He maneuvered to the left and began to dive, looking all around for the incoming shot. When the weapon 's warhead detonated, it sent most of the resulting fragments into the left wing. After a few seconds of pressure from the Gs, part of the wing broke off.  The remaining Nosferatus were ordered to break it off; the three headed northeast in the wake of Gordon's flight from the battle.

    Chariot Flight
    November 24, 2045 (Local Time: 2033)
    Central Nordlands

    "Two Minutes!"

Just after that was said, the lead transport was forced to break and fill the sky with chaff, flares, and ECM as it countered the missiles fired at it. inside the men held on tight as the transport rocked around and maneuvered. They could only guess what was going on, and the maneuvers didn't make any of those guesses particularly hopeful. Only the opening of the XC-01's side doors told them that they weren't ending their mission aboard the plane.

    "One minute!"

The Cabin was bathed in red light from bulbs above the doors. With the call from the Jump Master, the finally checks went through like clockwork. Each paratrooper patted down the person in front of him and checked his attachment to the static line one last time. Both sides then went from the last man to the first, each calling out his number in the line and affirming that he was okay to go. Finally came the green light; with it the lines started shuffling to the door to make their jumps. Erusea had paid the price for Centrum Korsing; now they could claim it.

    ---------------------------------------MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!------------------------------------------

Debrief: Excellent work everyone. Though the airport has fallen to Erusean forces, it will take them some time to repair the damage done to it. Reports indicate that the fire started by the explosion of the fuel depot and several jets has been raging for hours and is only just now being cleared. With their efforts to gain forward air bases slowed, we can hopefully use this time to prepare for one of the most crucial phases of Operation Floodgate. Report back when the next briefing is posted.

    EIV Retribution (CAB-2)
    November 28, 2045 (Local Time: 0445)
    Northwest Spring Sea

It wasn't his first choice, but it'd been better than prison. He'd joined Neucom to make a better life for himself and make his parents proud. The then-beaten Erusean Air Force, nothing more than a little peddle in the shadow of the corporations, hadn't offered much hope. Nuecom had been looking for promising and fit young men and women to help it break boundaries in avtaion. The young, black-haired man signed up as soon as he could. He'd then found people who encouraged him to never give up, people whose tenacity and philosophies had become his own.

When it all came down, Itkonene set aside his reluctance to be in the military and laid low until he was picked up by the new Erusean Navy. He was safe again, but he was practically alone now. None of his heroes and mentors hadn't made it, all but one. That was okay with him, because for Lieutenant Jasper Itkonen, Flight Captain Cynthia Bridgette Fitzgerald was the only woman he wanted. He watched as she made motions at the 3-D map at the front of one of 72nd Naval Squadron's briefing rooms. Shown were their westernmost escorts, pointed towards the Osean carrier group several hundred kilometers away.

"...We expect them to adopt a strategy of methodically breaking down our outer defenses. Osea knows the danger of surface ships after so many encounters with Yuktobanian-built vessels. We can likely expect attacks from aircraft supported, to a degree, by ships and submarines." She explained, the map visualizing her words into hypothetical attacks.

"In all likelihood the attack will be by both Osean Navy jets and other unit. I can almost guarantee we'll be facing Rosenthal assets and Osean energy weapons. I stress that theses two kinds of targets be engaged immediately." She went on.

The image of the aforementioned company's logo appeared on a screen behind her, as did images of their jets and weapons. Pilots noted that the newest primary threats were platforms such as the AL-1B "Tesla" and the AGM-181 Anti-Ship Missile. Fitzgerald went on to mention that the ships would be coordinating their attacks with the fighters to give the UN-backed forces as little breathing room as possible. A hand rose.

"Okay lasers I get, but...Why them in particular, Priest?" Sub-Commander Julius Karhu asked. Fitzgerald grimaced.

"Because we've received word that the two pilots leading the company's fixed-wing detachment have an unhealthy obsession with anti-shipping. While I do trust our defenses to hold back what they have, I see no reason to further stack the favor in our odds." She said. Murmurs of agreement sounded, though no one knew who their fellow pilot was talking about.

"We've all fought the jets the Osean Navy has already, but I will remind you all to remember their strengths and weaknesses. It's imperative we defeat the Oseans here to cover our southern flank and our supply routes across the straits. Are there any further questions?" She concluded.

With only a few questions to reaffirm the position of CAP stations, callsigns, and the location of land-based tankers, the squadron split. Part of it, eight pilots, gathered together to discuss their initial plans and their tactics. Itkonen stood among the other pilots, talking and making hand motions to describe the turning and performance capabilities of the F-24, F/A-38, and A-27. Their Su-37s were a bit older as a platform, but it'd been discovered that the Su-37 had a slightly better turn radius than the machine. The main concern became land-based planes: Hailstorms, Enforcers, Taipans and the like.

    "Lieutenant Itkonen."

The young man turned and found himself nearly face-to-face with the woman of his affections. He had to visibly avoid flinching. A smile flickered across her face.

"I didn't mean to scare you." She apologized.

"Oh no, it's fine. Anyways what can I do for you, Flight Captain?" He insisted with a confident smile.

"You will be flying on my wing today. I don't believe we've ever flown before, so I'll be watching." She said. Itkonen nodded, eyes widening in surprise for a minute.

"It'll be an honor!" He replied with genuine surprise. Above them, the intercom crackled and a siren wailed quickly three times.

"All pilots, report to your aircraft!" A voice from the Warfare Coordination Center (WCC) ordered. The two pilots exchanged ready grins and followed the others to get suited up.

    EIV Expeditionary (VRR-43)
    November 28, 2045 (Local Time: 0445)
    Northwest Spring Sea

    "Prepare to fire first salvo!"

As the voice echoed off the deck of the ship, sailors outside the confines of the Knight-class destroyer hurried away from the rear Vertical Launch System (VLS) Cells. Some went inside, but most simply hurried beyond lines painted on the catwalk and waited for the show. Inside the WCC, sailors watched screens closely as  the final few seconds before launch passed by. With help from a EA-200, they'd managed to get a bead on the forward elements of the Osean carrier's escorts. The faint images of three surface ships glowed on the edges of their radars.

"Targets locked!" A radar operator called.

"Targets locked!" The Tactical Action Officer replied.

Almost immediately after, six ABR-300C Anti-Ship Missiles rushed upwards from their cells. They fired in a delayed sequence so that each could get clear of the ship before the next went screaming up. The weapons arced over the ship, bathing it in brilliant light for a few seconds before they dove down to just above the waves and accelerated to Mach 5. To the destroyer's left and right, other ships of her class, the Fenris and Kolga, fire the same number and type of weapons their sister vessel had. Behind the arrowhead formation, the final ship in the formation, Indomitable, now played the waiting game. She headed up air defense alongside four of the fleet's Paladin-class frigates, waiting for the inevitable response from Osea and her allies.

    OFS Icarus (CVN-62)
    November 28, 2045 (Local Time: 0445)
    Northwest Spring Sea

"General Quarters, General Quarters! All hands, man your battle stations!"

Jed barely heard the loud wail of the following alarm as he sat in his F-24's cockpit. He felt his teeth clench; something mixed with excitement swirled down in his loins. The Eruseans had fired first, and now that meant that they'd have to play the two-fold game of defending the fleet and attacking the outer escorts for the Erusean Carrier Retribution. Wolfe hurried up to make sure he was ready before slapping down on Jed's helmet twice.

"Bring home number five!" The Plane Captain beamed.

    "Gotcha Wolfy!" Jed assured.

Jed lowered the canopy as the engines came to life and hurriedly went through things with AI. He looked over in the dim early-morning light and saw Annie watching him expectantly. With a grin under his mask, he held up a peace sign and looked forward at the Yellow Shirt directing him forward.

"Launch all fighters! Launch all fighters!" the same voice from earlier bellowed across the deck.

Jed was, in all honesty, glad to be back on the ship for this. The detachment had been recalled two days ago to temporarily help before it'd be cycled back to Skalski. Personally Jed was happy to just fight the war from the boat. It was his home and one of the reasons he'd joined the Navy rather than the Marines or Air Force.

The launch was as fast as could be done; It was almost a blur in the young pilot's mind. It seemed like he hadn't even done anything before the Cat Officer and him were exchanging salutes. Jed felt the Hellcat lurch and scream forward before he was hurled out over the sea. He adjusted the flaps and banked left when he was well out in front of the ship. As he circled, Annie was busy saluting the Cat Officer. The whole affair felt unfamiliar to her, fleet defense that was. Flying F-16Js had been mostly about killing ships, not protecting them.

She spotted Jed's F-24 high above and banked to the right to exit the pattern and meet him. As she flew up she felt a bit of anger at him. Since they;'d returned to the ship things had gone back to normal. That was, Jed and her were once again only lead and wingwoman. After the night at the Skalski O'Club he'd grown a little distant, likely reminded of the bad times in Santa Marina.

"Skull 2-1, 2-2 has joined." She radioed.

    "Rog." Jed replied quickly.

The two jets  pushed away from the carrier and then circled one last time to pick up Prettyboy and Streetfighter. Under orders from AWACS Wave Runner, they were ordered northeast. The VF-34 jets wouldn't be defending their fleet directly; they were being tasked as originally planned to help strike at the Erusean flotilla. For Jed, that was just as good as defending the Icarus and her escorts. Jed didn't waste any time; he spread his flight into a wall formation and led them towards where some familiar faces were waiting.

    OFS Enchanter (DDG-1012)
    November 28, 2045 (Local Time: 0447)
    Northwest Spring Sea

The Zumwalt-class destroyer was perhaps one of the oddest looking ships to come out of the naval yards. shaped unlike any other Osean Navy vessel to set sail, it was deigned to be the flagship for many new technologies now found in many ships now in service. It was also supposed to be a rather stealthy machine, but right now that boast had been silenced. Then again, Lieutenant Commander Cohen Blakley thought, his country wasn't the only one with an R&D department. The Tactical Action Officer watched tensely as sailors hurried about, many staring at their screens.

"We're tracking six Vampires inbound! Vectors 045 to 135, Cherubs 3! Range is 400 Miles!" The senior radar operator announced.

"Engage Vampires at will, prepare chaff and evasive maneuvers!" He replied.

Outside, two clouds of silver flew out into the darkness in hopes of drawing away the missiles. In the meantime the ship started to weave as it sailed towards the enemy ships. Its most potent response to the ABR-300 was the RIM-175A NGSM (Next-Generation Standard Missile). Enchanter, like most of her sister ships, carried 120 VLS cells. Like the Knight-class boats that'd fired on her, she responded with a salvo. However the missiles launching from the Osean ship, as well as the others near her, were smaller than the ABRs and moved higher. Enchanter launched two towards each missile inbound for it.

As they passed into Wave Runner's area of responsibility, Shamu said over the intercom, "Flip the switch?"

    "Flip the switch," Sharky confirmed.

"Check.  Wave Runner, Serpent 1 flight of 4 checking in."  Introductions made, Shamu resumed passing over his systems.  "Cortana.  System check," he said, while flipping through his MFDs to confirm the AI's assessment.

"ECM in standby, system nominal.  Active stealth in standby, system nominal.  Towed decoys not deployed, 4 available.  Radar standby.  Optical standby.  AGM-181 nominal, 4 remaining.  MALD nominal, 8 remaining.  AIM-154 nominal, 2 remaining."

"Stream towed decoy, do not radiate."

    "Understood."

    "Cortana.  Play 'Ship Hunting.'"

    "Playing."

The familiar strains of "Unbreakable" by Stratovarius came through Sharky and Shamu's headphones.  The Killer Fish were home, and they were hunting.
