The radar warning receiver shrieked loudly as Cerus drew his eyes to his radar display, a bright red "Warning!" flashing across the lower part of his vision as his aircraft was spiked by seekers. It didn't take long for the dreaded second half of the message to replace the first worrisome alert, a flashing "Incoming!" blaring to life while his eyes caught the telltale marks of missiles on his radar. "I'm spiked-Berserker, I'm rolling out! Split and see if you can't lure his buddy off of his wing!"

"Wilco!" Noel responded before dipping the Talon down and sliding out from underneath Cerus, peeling off with a condensed wake from the wings of the F/A-38 as she moved to give him room to maneuver. Her own HUD was awash with the red warning flags, though none of the special flare that Cerus received due to the missile locks and launches directed at him. She pulled back on the stick, sucking in a breath as the G-forces met with her as she banked away from the incoming seekers, reaching up with her free hand off the throttle to enter a few commands into the MFD. "Rapture, the first screen wasn't enough. Dump a second screen to be sure, and initiate defensive program Alpha Two."

"Yes ma'am, defensive program Alpha Two. ECM and dispensers awaiting command. Second chaff dump commencing."

Chaff spilled from her aircraft again as she turned her head for the EOTS to get a solid look at the two incoming CFA-44s, watching as the missile trails carved their way through the sky towards Cerus, hoping that breaking off would make her a juicy enough target for one of the Nosferatus to try and pounce.

As for Templar, Cerus threw the stick into a hard bank, pressing the rudder pedals hard and pulling the aircraft through a steep turn with him commanding the AI to drop another set of chaff behind him in the arc before dropping the nose and trying to escape by turning into his opponents. The defense program he had was putting out chaff in spaced intervals, enough to cover his quick descent below the front of the Nosferatu before he decided to sweep underneath, reassigning Rapture another countermeasure program before he shoved the throttle forward, the Talon's turbine screaming into the atmosphere as its luminescent tail flared out behind him. He kept an eye on the CFA-44 as it retreated from his level to ten degrees above, then twenty, attempting to dive between the flight and give Noel time to lock. "C'mon, take the bait...you know you want to, it's just a stubby Talon. You have that shiny, shiny Nos to play with..."

Gordon noted that four more jets had joined the fray...his old F-25. The man's brain got even more mathematical, especially in the face of what was starting to become overwhelming firepower. He found that Nerde 1's wingman was moving to run interference and had fired an AAM-5. Gordon reacted instinctively, trading the offensive for the defensive temporarily and following through with his move to push out of the AAM-5's field of view, leaving only flares to indicate he'd ever been there. He passed behind them by a couple hundred feet and yanked it to the right, coming around and displaying the top profile of the CFA-44C, Raptor-esque wings and all. Gordon looked up and started tracking with his HMD for his AP-11s.

With Azor under his reinforcements' claim, Gordon's wingman was trying to locate a new target when Naomi and her lot had fired. While his lead pilot had taught him well and he'd done his best to copy the man, numbers were starting to win here. Unlike Gordon, who was combining his resources from chaff to maneuvers to the EA-200s, the other man was growing increasingly tense. His face contorted in concentration as he started to descend, leaving out every now and then to perform a more complicated maneuver to try and avoid everything bearing down on him. Naomi's and Erich's weapons acted as the one-two punch that would spell his doom. Naomi's forced him into the wrong place; Erich's punched into the back half of the jet. The pilot grabbed his ejection seat and left the aircraft as soon as he felt the nose start to pitch up against his will.

At the same time, Hunter E4's newest fourship was forced to split as they were met by a cast of the West's current LRAAMs. The two CFAs that'd gone after pretty much everyone save for Hellhound, Nerde and Nier were stunted by Spikes and Otaku's shots. Then Lynx had fired on one of them as she climbed, deploying chaff. The MICA, too close to make a tight enough climb upwards, went behind. Spikes's missiles had more time to adjust and skewered the ascending aircraft in the side as it rolled to nose over.

Her lead managed to survive and pounce on the Emmerians as the other three in the flight had fired at the strikers off in the distance. He chose the trailing fighter, Azor 4, and rolled inverted. trading speed and energy for angles he fired one of his AP-11s and switched to his gun to give the Emmerian some more to think about, letting off two bursts of 30mm rounds.

Having blasted by The FB-22s just in time to avoid the Anacondas before they could really do anything, Nier's attack was met in a calculated, mutually supportive manner. The wingman of the pair made a very tight roll over and after Cerus while the other pointed his nose at Noel and fired two AP-13s. His wingman in the meantime armed his AP-11s and locked.

    "Hunter E4-5, Rapier!"

Cerus had been fired on for the third time today.

To the southeast, Jed Walker had scored his first kill as Hunter E2-1 was gaining energy again. The hit was like an uppercut, striking the CFA-44 with a burst of fragments between the intakes, those pieces of shrapnel fell into the engines, tearing through the engines. The CFA-44 trailed thick smoke as it started to fall from the sky. Hunter E2-1's pilot growled as one of the fragments from the blast had stung into his foot. It almost distracted him too long.

While Streetfighter's prey used the marginally good angle to avoid more than some light damage, Annie's target had been subjected to a few very bad circumstances, most of all were range and being fired on from head-on. The pilot's relative lack of experience was also not helping; as they threw their CFA into a left-hand dive, Annie's missile exploded under the right wing, tearing away parts of the jet. The Erusean fighter moved along steadily until it eased into a mortal dive. It's pilot had been knocked unconscious.

In the meantime the Halbred and Nagas had gotten back some footing, even as more missiles came at them. Eight of the jets, six bomb droppers and two mine layers, had organized into proper pairs and sunk down to low level, where the strike aircraft was meant to be when needed. The lead pilot, an Su-24 driver with the Yuktobanians in another life, screamed at the islands southeast, towards some "barracks" the Nordic troops on the island had been using. With a gulp and then a steady breath, he braved the errant tracers that started to float at him as his co-pilot readied the laser-guided bombs for use. His wingman was making a similar run from a different angle, delayed to prevent a collision.

"The pod is locked, bombs have a solid reflection." the co-pilot nodded, face still riveted to his displays.

"Naga E2-1, bombs away!" The pilot reported.

On the ground, Nordic troops scrambled as the jet howled overhead, leaving flares in its wake to counter a pair of Mistral SAMs fired as it went away. Not a second after it was clawing for altitude, more bombs impacted, throwing up geysers of flame mixed with concrete and metal, flattening burning and maiming. Further north, several Eagle V MRAPs met the same fate. The mine-layers, were limping away after having dropped their weapons, which by themselves would only have marginal effects. Two Mistrals had found their marks.

The rest of the formation was still largely unorganized as Serpents 1 and 2 sent their volleys. Colonel Kavachovich tracked the trails as six...no eight long-range missile screamed in. He hailed his wingman and aimed for the direction of the attack while the Su-43s were left to fend for themselves. Several, six to be exact, had simply dumped their stores and turned to flee. Two these, CBU carriers, fell to Serpent Two. Three more fell to Sharky and Shamu, leaving the rest to swirl in a ball. The attack had effectively been halted, and when Azor's missiles reached the party Azor 1 claimed her first kill, as did her Number Two.

"Two bandits, climbing to meet us, let's make them regret this!" Dipping his nose, Karhila squeezed the trigger and fired off a pair of AIM-120s at the trailing plane. Going full burner, he put the climb rate to use and got above the CFA-44s, ready to roll in with a high yo-yo. Huakka 2 fired another pair at the lead Nosferatu and then rolled out left in a slight climb, again, seeking the height advantage.

"Haukka 1 is engaging, 2 cover me!" called Karhila. Rolling the Phantom into a high yo-yo Riley looked down through the cockpit and watched the Nosferatu. As soon as his missiles impacted he would move in. Haukka 2 would stay high and wait in case any help was needed.

    ...

"Two CFA-44s approaching, right hook, turn in to meet them!" Riley was pushed against his seat has he executed a hard turn and the two switch blade fighters collapsed their wings as they gained speed. Selecting the lead aircraft, Riley locked another pair of Anacondas and fired them.

    "Serpent 3, Fox 3 ripple!"

Rolling out to the right, Riley punched burner and moved to engage the higher CFA-44.

"Rose, give me updates on other hostiles as needed. Chart, you got my back!"

"Of course," said Chart grinning under he mask. She worked her self into a more comfortable position as Riley made the high performance turn and climb in order to engage the high bandit.

Jed caught a glimpse of his first kill as he nosed down from his climb andthen went to the left of the falling pieces of the Nosferatu. Jed snaked around, aiming to turn his nose towards the remaining Su-43s to try and help in stopping them. He fell back on his two remaining AIM-152s and once again painted the closest two Strike Berkuts with his radar. At the same time the pilot increased the throttle to close the distance.

"Skull 2-2, say status." He drawled.

"Skull 2-2 is unengaged at this time, have destroyed one bandit." Annie radioed.

She 'd banked right, pulling a high yo-yo to eventually level herself out, turning away from the island and circling around after she had some distance between it and herself. Her brain hadn't fully registered the fact she'd just downed her first enemy jet.

"Roger, rejoin on Skull 2-1. Ah'm goin for the strikers."

    "Understood."

The fourship started to reorganize into its original pairs as Streetfighter turned northeast to help Prettyboy run down the last CFA in the immediate vicinity. The Erusean had snapped left to try and get a shot at Jed as he screamed towards the 43s, but Prettyboy was on it. He quickly selected his GAU-22/A cannon and persuaded the Nosferatu otherwise. Streetfighter  came at the Nosferatu from its nine o' clock to make things even worse. Prettyboy then moved to go for an actual guns kill after a few "herding" bursts.

In the meantime Annie raced to catch up to Jed, using the rudders to ease her jet into position to his left. Her eyes switched between the sky and the displays as they closed in. The RWR told her the general area still had several unfriendly radars, but they appeared to be okay for now. When she got in visual range

"Skull 210 Fox 3, Fox 3." He declared, letting his last two Lancers go tearing after the Erusean strike jets.

Unlike Annie, Jed was fully aware of what he'd done, but unable to find a reaction yet. His brain was still geared on surviving the fight and repelling the attack on the island. He could still feel his blood pumping, though.

"Hellhound Lead to Wave Rider. Scratch One." Erich called as he let his number two take the lead. Naomi couldn't help but feel a slight tinge of disappointment at her lead getting a kill over her, but the job took priority over her personal score.

Spikes chimed in with her kill, "Spikes, One down."

"Nomad, lock up the next group and fire. I got your back." Wolf Dog called in reassurance as the distance between them and the CFA's closed. "Keep firing from long range until we close, that's if WE do get close."

"Copy Sir." Naomi said as she locked up on to two more CFA-44's using data from her AI and radar and fired on them, using up her last two AMRAAM missiles. She was down to her four Winders and her GAU-22/A now. "Nomad. Fox Three, Fox Three!"

"Wolf Dog, Fox Three, Fox Three!" Wolf Dog followed, firing on one of the CFA's Naomi targeted and another errant bandit that entered his field of vision. Naomi and Erich pulled left and adjusted their position again, staying light on their feet.

Victor and Spikes meanwhile targeted two separate Nosferatu and fired an AMRAAM each at them. Breaking off right once more to present less of a target to the enemy.

    "Otaku, Fox Three!"

    "Hellhound Three, Fox Three."

"Three, I got the low guy!"  Peaches slung and Anaconda at the rapidly approaching CFA-44 before switching to Sidewinders and pulling her F-02 into a climb to get an altitude advantage in preparation for the merge.

Meanwhile in Serpent 1, Shamu said, "Sharky, we got bandits heading toward us.  Strikers are bugging out."

    "Lock 'em up."

    "All of them?"

"Yes.  Put Two on the inbounds as well."

"Roger that."  Shamu locked on to Colonel Kavachovich and his wingman, as well as two of the five remaining Su-43s.

Seeing the "HOT TRIG" light come on in the corner of his HMD, Sharky squeezed the trigger four times. As the Anacondas streaked away, Cortana said, "Ten Anacondas expended.  Eight remaining."

"Got it, Cortana."  By now, with the eerie electronic whistling of DoubleV's "Tortuga" in his ears, Sharky was laser-focused.  He was in "the zone," a zone he hadn't been in during combat for a LONG time.

"Serpent 2, ripple 2 Fox 3!"  Taco called over the radio as he launched his two Anacondas at Col. Kavachovich and his wingman.  At Shamu's suggestion, he also launched a pair at another two of the retreating Su-43s.

"Condor, you have one on your tail tracking and shooting! Break! Break!" Aldric warned Ferdinand. The reply was simple and immediate, "Hoy shit!"

Aldric and Ferdinand dumped flares and broke hard into the threat, while Charline and Wynne sped into the furball. Eventually, Ferdinand got a lock on the Nosferatu and fired a MICA IR. "Condor, Fox Two!"

Both Sabrina and Brian turned left hard, and a few seconds they where behind and turning with the enemy aircraft. Their aircraft being smaller where much more agile then the large CFA-44.

"Thats right you fat fuck..." Brian said to himself.

Brian locked on with an AAM-5 and fired while Sabrina fired her JM61A1.

Gordon deployed flares and roared upwards, steadily tightening his nose-over until he was on the verge of blacking out. The Osean simply stared out amidst the grunts and muscle tightening ingrained in him from years and years of flying. He made a swift dive below the flight, dropping out of sight in a clear sky by using speed and gravity. It almost looked like a parachutist in free fall. At the same time he worked against the missile Haukka had shot at him, using the distance between shooter and target to avoid them. Eddie Gordon didn't like to bug out, but he was too smart to be a Kamikaze. His fuel was also reaching the level where he would need to stow his killer instincts until another day. All that dodging had eaten through his tanks.

"Hunter E-4 Lead to flight, I have to bug out; getting towards Recall Status. All remaining Hunter E4s, don't string yourselves out." He radioed as he screamed along into safety.

The last part had been in hopes of appealing to logic via authority. EIAF pilots were starting to get bold, TOO bold. Gordon's pride wasn't all together either, though. This was the first day he hadn't gotten a kill. Oh well, another day.

This is Fighter Weapons School, Captain Gordon. It is NOT real combat...

So said the Colonel, Gordon thought with a disagreeing frown.

The Nosferatu that'd attacked Azor 4 moved left after making its strafing run. The pilot looked back and saw he had four jets after him, with the one he'd just attacked breaking right and going down after him. He shoved the nose of his CFA down and decided he wanted a little more space first. At the same time, Hellhound was lighting it up again. Naomi's AMRAAMs convinced him he had enough space, so he dumped chaff to deal with her. About the same time Azor 4 fired his MICA; the Nosferatu was climbing while he was diving. The weapon and Erusean met, enveloping the front half of the CFA in flame.

The errant shot from Hellhound had ended up going at one of the CFAs dueling with Nier, the one who was fighting Cerus. The sudden missile stunted his attack, forcing him to break away from the Talon and deploy chaff to avoid being hit by the AMRAAM. Colonel Kavochovich was about ready to sound the retreat, but he was cut off when part of Rosenthal's formation started shooting at him. His wingman was one of the squadron's most novice pilots, but the Colonel wasn't going to leave him to die. Not without trying to save him.

"Koskinen! Break up and right! deploy chaff in steady intervals!" He ordered.

    "Yes Lead!"

Kavachovich dipped down and skillfully went under the other CFA before deploying his own chaff, watching as an almost unreal amount of missiles closed in on him. He snarled quietly and deployed his second burst of chaff. His wingman skyrocketed for altitude, flight path like the first hill on a roller coaster (with chaff tracing the arc). He felt shakes as missiles exploded near enough to rattle him. He began his descent with his nose almost directly pointed at the top of Serpents 1 and 2. Leaving speed to his descent, Koskinen did all he could to slow his approach and lead the two FB-22s. With near-ragged breaths he fired both his AP-11s at the trailing jet and practically came sliding in to try and gun Serpent 1.

Colonel Kavahovich literally exhibited what the Oseans had come to call "Pucker Factor" as his plane took a fair hit from an AMRAAM, one of Peaches. The event occurred while he was going after her, in fact. The man decided to make one pass and then go. His plane wasn't in the shape for a prolonged flight. His young subordinate would be joining him.

"Koskinen, the second you're losing the advantage..." He began.

"Understood, Hunter Lead!" His wingman enthusiastically called.

Knowing he had only one run, the Colonel damned the torpedoes. He fired all four of his AP-13s at Peaches in two ripples separated by a few seconds.

The Colonel once again hadn't fully realized that some of the missiles weren't for him. Some were intended for the wreck of a formation. Specifically, the jets that were running for home. With the shots being fired on them the only thing to worry about, the odds seemed to be easier. But limited coordination happened in some cases, leading to Taco nailing two running Su-43s. The Yuke-borne pilots terse voice got the others in line and let them limp away, most alive but heavily damaged by Serpent 1 and 2's barrages.

Those still moving in to attack were only met by Jed right now, and Mark Walker's son had managed to spare the Nordic troops on the island some more of the punishment that was coming for them. The only aircraft remaining that had munitions to attack were five CBU carriers. Jed caught one as it made a pop-up attack, Which ended up thwarting its wingman's attack as he dumped his bombs and turned, only to face several Mistrals from Nodic troops. The 16th Mech had done its deed for the day. A second, who'd gone lone wolf, was also stopped by a Boxer APC sporting an AA gun. The last two dealt the final blows the 16th would feel for the day. They made their attack along the east face of the largest hill of Stahl, where the core of the units Panther 2 MBTs were spread out in case the unit had to fight before it left the place. Each Su-43 carried six cluster bombs, which they released so the explosions would crawl up the hill. The resulting attack cost the 16th roughly three companies of tanks and their men.

In the meantime Skull 1's challengers were boxed from retreat after Skull 1-4 had killed another jet. The last two aircraft had fallen into simply maneuvering wildly through the four F-24s surrounding and attacking them. In Skull 2's domain, Prettyboy's CFA took a few hits as the pilot moved away from the stream of firing and started to nose towards home, now alone. The same could be said for the others to the northeast. The EIAF may have bloodied the 16th's nose good, but their fighter cover had gotten in it deep. Real deep.

    KILLS THIS ROUND

    Azor 4 has killed a CFA-44

Serpent 2 has killed two Su-43s

Skul 2-1 has killed an Su-43

"Roger that Hellhound Lead." Ryuubi replied, the latest in the series of kill acknowledgments that was racking up. Jed quickly got his second kill to her.

She stared at her screen as the newest picture was delivered, watching the Su-43s run as Serpent encouraged them to run faster.

"All aircraft, all aircraft this is Waverider. Raid One is bugging out, good job. Concentrate on their CAP." She ordered.

"Skull Lead copies all, Waverider." Cyborg replied.

The Daredevils' leader came out of a tight right and fired her remaining AIM-9X at one of the CFAs as the two were caught in the middle of her fourship. In the meantime Annie felt a stupid question boiling up in her as the Su-43s ran. That, of all things, had been repelling a raid? Most of the aircraft were still airborne and running. She followed Jed as he turned to the right, checking to see if anything was still out there. Prettyboy was going after the last CFA until it either ran too far or he killed it; Streetfighter was in support. He triggered another burst of 25mm at the fleeing machine.

In his own jet, Jed started doing math to see if they needed to turn west and head for Skalski. He'd be okay for a little while longer.

"Skull 2-2 say fuel status. Skull 2-3, 2-4 say status when free." He radioed.

"Skull 2-1, I'm still doing well on fuel; have some time before Bingo." Annie reported.

    "Gotcha." Jed nodded.

The familiar feeling of BARCAP washed over as the two jets settled into a racetrack pattern almost directly south of the island. Annie split off from Jed and went over him, circling back around and moving in the opposite direction of his circling. He looked out at Annie's jet and saw the AIM-9 missing.

"Good job today, Tsun-Tsun." He radioed, flashing a thumbs up. Annie had to roll her eyes behind her visor.

"Not over yet, Bronco." She pointed out.

Jed gave a quick acknowledgement and took in a breath, the first he was consciously aware of. His body hadn't settled down yet and was still pumping a great number of chemicals throughout in order to keep his reflexes sharp and his brain alert. The first realization that came to him after it was over was that he'd survived. He'd met another fighter in his own and won.

As Cortana cried out, "Missile Warning!" Sharky yelled, "Two, break!"  The two FB-22s promptly split their formation, Sharky snapping left and Taco going right, the big strike jets streaming flares and chaff.  At the same time the laser IRCM turrets mounted on the spine and belly began tracking the missiles, bombarding the missile seekers with laser energy once they had a shot.  While Taco focused on evading the two AP-11s chasing him, Sharky asked Shamu, "Where is the bastard?"

"Leader's bugging out, second dude's on our ass.  Going for guns."

Sharky pulled Night Witch into a climb, punching the afterburners to maintain his airspeed.  Once sufficiently above Koskinen's jet, he looped back around, locking on to the CFA-44 with his HMDS.  The left bay door snapped open.  "Serpent 1, Fox 2!"  Sharky squeezed the trigger, and the Block 4 AIM-9X sped away towards the rookie Erusean.

Meanwhile Peaches swore loudly as the RWR and her AI began screaming at her about the 4 AP-13s incoming.  "Serpent 4, engaged defensive!" Wheeling her F-02 around, she launched a pair of AIM-154s at Col. Kavachovich before turning perpendicular to the AP-13s and dove for the deck, trading altitude for airspeed, streaming chaff along the way while she attempted to lose herself in the radar clutter, her Wyvern's defensive electronics jamming the incoming missiles' radars.

Fortunately the gamble worked.  With their seekers bombarded with noise, their original target apparently out of their field of view, and a new target the size of the Osean continent in front of them, the 4 missiles flew into the chaff cloud and detonated.

Pulling out of her death-dive at 150 feet AGL, Peaches said, relieved, "Never thought I'd be so glad for those low level runs."

    "Tell me about it, mamacita."

"DON'T call me that.  All Serpents, Serpent 4's in the clear."

Meanwhile, Taco, who had managed to shake off the AP-11s through a combo of absurd numbers of flares, laser jamming, and maneuvering, called, "2's clear.  Moving to back you up, boss."  Bringing his FB-22 around, he pulled into position behind Serpent 1, establishing mutual support while Sharky engaged Koskinen.

In the meantime, Hellhound flight altered their course and closed the distance; despite not entirely exhausting their BVR range options Winters called for the unit to press the fight as word of the strike package bugging out got around alongside Waverider's order to concentrate on the hostile CAP.

"Keep nimble and unpredictable and don't lose sight of each other. Watch for friendlies. Don't be shy to call for help if you need it." Wolf Dog radioed as his eyes scanned the skies for hostiles, him and Naomi placed themselves beneath the hostile CAP while Gisele and Patterson would come from above opposite of them.

"Spikey, give me the nearest hostile's trajectory and heading." Naomi called as she caught sight of a target crossing her field of view. "Working." the AI replied as it linked targeting data from the radar to Naomi's EHUD. Naomi now found her first close range target and pulled up towards it, getting into position to attack.

"Just don't miss this time...Getting a little freaking old..." Naomi thought out loud.

"Cool it Nomad, a pilot in a rush to fight is a dead one." Gisele called out as she nosed over and picked a CFA-44 with Victor providing cover.

"Got your back Nomad, keep your cool and don't get tunnel vision." Erich said as he flanked Naomi's target.

"Copy." Naomi said, grunting as she pulled her jet into a position to fire, hearing the Sidewinder lock tone growl in hear headset. "Nomad, Fox two!"

    "Spikes, Fox Two!"

Two short range AIM-9X Sidewinders now streaked away towards their intended targets.

The warning tone blared in his ears again as the CFA-44 unleashed two more missiles at his six, the daggers streaking towards him as he throttled up more, the Talon's turbine roaring louder than ever as it struggled to put just a little more distance between the incoming seekers and its owner. There was no way, of course; Cerus had just wanted a little more space to deal with before he tried anything. Pulling sharply up on the stick, he was thrown against the back of the seat as the plane tilted skywards, rising into the atmosphere like a grey blur as chaff and flare dumped out behind him in anticipation of the coming seekers. He was about to pull out and level to see if he couldn't get a bead on his pursuer, but luck struck home, something he wasn't used to and which gave him the breathing room that he needed. A wayward AMRAAM seemed to momentarily lock on the CFA-44 behind him before dogging it shortly, forcing the pilot to break off from his attack pattern and retreat underneath, lest the missile actually do damage. He breathed a little sigh of relief; he had underestimated the Nosferatu, and indeed, the squadrons that had come to meet them just a tad.

    "Berserker, how's your tail?"

"Hot. Very, VERY hot," Noel barked as her own engine burned, the Talon cutting a path while the missile warnings screeched in her helmet. She was halfway ready to ask Rapture to turn them off, but it wouldn't do her any good to ignore them. They were, after all, trailing her close. Banking left and pulling hard before popping the airbrakes for a high bank, she watched her radar screen as the AP-13s closed in, the AI dispensing chaff post-haste in a flurry at the seekerheads of the missiles behind her. Gritting her teeth, she chuckled a little as she saw the wingman of the pilot behind her break off pursuit from Nier 1, swapping targets to the CFA-44 banking away with chaff spilling from its aft. "But it seems like I'm not the one needing a spare missile to save him."

"Cute. Plug him one, and if he moves to evade, wait until he's dumped his first set of flares to see if you can get another shot. I'll get the guy on your six o'clock."

"Roger! One swapmeet coming up!" she replied cheerily, the auburn-haired woman locking on before arming her AIM-9X sidewinders, her HMD flashing as it gave her a steady tone. Grinning widely, she banked the plane slightly to get a better angle on her quarry before pressing the switch, the satisfying streak of her Sidewinder slicing through the air and condensation as it screamed off of its launch rail. "Berserker, Fox Two!"

Cerus likewise pulled another few Gs to bring his jet to bear, the nose staring down the CFA-44 chasing Noel as she passed across the sky in front of him to cut off the CFA-44 that was tailing him before. Arming his own Sidewinders, he breathed softly before the lock tone hummed steadily, his display showing "Shoot!" as he watched Noel's pursuer cross towards him. "Templar, Fox Two!"

The missile on his starboard wing ignited its motor before roaring off of the rail, flaring into existence as messenger of the end as it sought out its target, hot on the IR signature of the Erusean hostile. The other one was still armed, a viper in waiting as he held his fire, watching to see if the first volleys hit or if they would manage to pull away this time.

"C'mere you son of a bitch!" exclaimed Karhila. Suddenly, he realized the CFAs reversal of course. "Dammit!" he thought to himself as he pulled up halfway through his roll.

"Cowards!" exclaimed Lahti from the back. "They won't even stand and fight!"

"Haukka flight is disengaged, hostiles are bugging out!" called Nahri. He felt a slight sense of disappointment, before, the Eruseans would fight until they were bingo, but now it seemed that the increased numbers made them shrink from unnecessary risks.

    ***

Getting above the less experienced wingman, Riley locked him up and fired another AIM-154.

    "Serpent 3, Fox 3!"

Maintaining his altitude advantage, Riley sat above the Nosferatu, waiting for his opponents next move. If the jet attempted to turn into him, Riley would simply pull into him and get him with an AIM-9 or a gun shot, and if he rolled right, another AIM-154 would chase him down, same with pulling up or heading for the deck. Hearing Peaches call, he responded,

    "Roger that 4,"

The CFA that VF-34's commander had fired on had been caught in a climb. The pilot sent away flares and barrel rolled in a wide circle, moving fast to try and exit the furball to the west, and then circle around and go home. The natural movements of any barrel roll meant that the pilot would find themselves diving, even if only briefly. In the overwhelming odds that'd filled the Erusean's mind, he hadn't realized he was practically going head-to-head with one Naomi Hathaway. The pilot yanked back the stick as Naomi fired her AIM-9X and started to trail flares as he yanked left. The manuver wasn't enough, not enought to defeat the close-range weapon. Spikes's shot further complicated things, enough to secure the youngest member of Hellhound Flight her first kill. A large fireball appeared ahead and above of the F-25.

Prettyboy's target had made the mistake of trying to gain some space with a brief sprint towards safety. The trade off was  he was a good target for the VF-34 Hellcat when the Osean came in for another burst of 25mm rounds. The bullets ripped into the jet's right engine and spine until the damage had been done. The pilot ejected from the stricken fighter a matter of seconds later, choosing to instead survive the cold waters below.

Noel's head-to-head shot surprised the CFA pilot she was charging. In a flurry, the pilot selected their cannon and fired before forcing themselves to break to the left. The close range got them, though; the AIM-9 plowed through the left intake of the CFA as it broke in the same direction. Her lead, in the meantime, had managed to help box in the two CFAs, making it exceedingly difficult for the surviving CFA to get out. The Erusean broke, deploying flares to increase their chances of living. It moved the AIM-9 into a corkscrew-looking path, which ended up slugging the CFA in the belly. The aircraft's smooth flight was interrupted as its nose was practically forced down. Score two for the Ustians.

Koskinen was quietly impressed that such a large jet could move with any kind of haste. He naturally turned after the jet as it countered his attack. He accepted he would have to try and use his cannon again; his AP-11s were gone. His long-range AP-13s would do little good at this range, either. As the AIM-9X from Serpent Lead came off, the young pilot broke off his attack, deployed flares, went up and then snaked back and over the PMC aircraft. Higher above him was Riley in his F-02, who caught the man in the back with an AIM-154. Koskinen had been looking around for the enemy missile, deploying chaff, when he took the full force of the warhead. His squadron commander was quietly informed by the AI that his jet had gone down.

The Colonel's RWR interuptted and told him what he was facing; naturally he followed his training. Chaff away, break hard and fast, going where the radar-guided weapons would be hard-pressed, and then escape. His manuver put him to the left of the proverbial cloud his young compatriot had been swallowed up by. Kavachovich was saddened a young man had been killed, but he kept his emotions in check. Anger would only see him join young Koskinen, as would sadness. He arced north, increasing speed and moving over the island. Tracers shot past every now and again but the man was keeping up his speed. He got north of it when he started to feel a vibrating in his jet. The man looked back and saw that his damage had steadily worsened, most likely put on by the maneuvers he'd had to take.

It quickly got to the point that he was sure his plane would lose a good chunk of it before he even reached the straits. The man looked down, checked his GPS, and noted something. Another island, very very tiny but a place to be. The man slowed his jet and aimed for it. His mind didn't make the plan very elaborate; he'd simply eject and cling to the little rock until rescued. Colonel Kavachovich accepted that, was happier he'd live, and reached one hand up to the ejection rungs.

"Hunter E-4 Lead, sound the retreat." He ordered, grimacing a second as he realized that was the first time he'd had to order that in his combat career.

"Understood Hunter Lead." Gordon replied. It was the last thing Kavachovich heard before he pulled the rungs.

"Hunters! Pull out, it's over. Bug out East, bug out East!"Gordon radioed a second after. The frustration in his voice was clear.

Ryuubi watched as the symbols on her screen split after the latest kills, running back for Erusean like the Su-43s had. One of the crew next to her, who played the E-12's link to the Icarus, took a glance at the situation.

"Should I get the boat to send out Stallion Flight?" He asked. "Ruby" nodded and adjusted her boom mike.

"All aircraft this is Wave Runner, bandits are bugging out east. Do not pursue, do not pursue. Establish CAP over Stahl until relieved. Labyrinth is readying Stallion Flight now." She spoke up.

"Skull Lead acknowledges...Okay who's got weapons left?" Cyborg called out.

"Skull 2-1 here, Ah've burned through my Lancers Lead." Jed spoke up amongst the calls. The rest of his flight had 2-3 Lancers each. Everyone still had their AMRAAMs it seemed and a few Sidewinders had been expended.

"Skull 2-1, Skull Lead, Take your flight and head to Skalski as soon as Stallion's airborne and enroute."

    "Roger that, Lead."

Jed checked his gauges and displays again as he turned to go down the cold leg of the CAP again. With a pause in place he let himself gather his thoughts now that he'd finally calmed. His assessment of the Eruseans was that they'd been effectively ambushed but were still plenty together. They had, after all, countered a numerically superior force and even still dropped a few bombs. They'd also left with a good deal of the strike force intact. The fighter force had been beaten pretty good, though.

He looked over at Annie's plane as they passed. She was in one piece, a good sign, and hadn't radioed any troubles. To him that was a good enough performance for a first combat hop. He'd talk with her some more on the ground. At the same time she was also evaluating herself and the F-24. She was still uncomfortable with the size; the F-2C's agility felt much higher compared to the F-24C's. It'd probably be best for her to get a few more mock dogfights out of Jed. Maybe it'd be a good segway into reconciling, too. Annie sighed as that can of worms opened up again. What would she even say to him? He'd seemed to have followed her own example and closed himself off. She became so wrapped up in it she almost didn't notice they'd been given new orders.

"Okay Skull 2, Stallion 2 is airborne. Go on ahead and take it east to Skalski." Cyborg spoke up.

"Roger that Lead...Okay Tsun-Tsun form back on my wing." Jed radioed. There was no response.

"Tsun-Tsun? Skull 206 can y'all hear me?" He pressed. Annie flinched inside her machine.

"Repeat your last, 210?" She asked quickly.

"Y'all okay 206? Rejoin on me; we're heading to Skalski."

She heard a chuckle just before he started talking.

    "Everything okay, Tsun-Tsun?"

Annie's face turned a soft red.

"Of course I'm alright, you idiot!! I'd report something to you if I wasn't!! And that's Lieutenant Chopra, do you hear me you idiot??!!" She blurted out. After a quick second she realized she'd acted inappropriately and went into a notable silence, save for a simple call.

"...Skull 206 moving to join you, Skull 210."

Jed tilted his head in confusion at the outburst. The others did their best to move things along so Annie's sole punishment was sitting there, knowing she'd embarrassed herself. Not even Cyborg said anything; in fact she smiled a little. Oh Bronco, you don't know how to read a girl that well do you?

"Skull 2-3 is rejoining Lead." Prettyboy spoke up.

"Skull 2-4 is rejoining Lead." Streetfighter chimed in.

The four Hellcats settled into a echeleon right, Jed at the lead, and turned to the northwest towards their new home for a while. After a few seconds Jed keyed his radio again.

"Hellhound, Serpent, this is Skull 2-1. Pardon my casualness but good to see yah both." He commented.

Watching the Erusean jets retreat, Shamu said, "Well, looks like party's over."

    Sharky said grimly, "For now."

"Well, yeah.  All Serpents, Serpent 1.  Form up on us."

    "Two."

    "Four."

As Ay Chihuahua! formed up on their wing, Shamu asked, "How'd you guys do over there?"

    "Looks like we got four."

"Not bad, kid.  We'll make a snake out of you yet."

    Shady chuckled, "Yes sir."

    "Peaches?  How'd you do?"

"Fat lot of nothin', boss.  Took a piece out of the lead of that two-ship that jumped you at the end, but not sure if he made it home or what."

"Got it.  Eh, over all, a good day."

Sharky said quietly, "Could have been better."

"For us, yeah.  But hey, it's our first time back in the saddle, man."

"True."  Sharky was quiet for a moment, then switched the music playing over intercom.  Shamu's eyes narrowed as a familiar combo of country-ish drum beats and guitar riffs came over the headset.  Sharky sang along with the song, "It's been a long time since I killed a man...  Some men don't need a reason why..."

Shamu sighed, "Dude.  Come on you're killing the mood."

"This song fits and you know it."

Listening to the lyrics, Shamu said, "I mean, I guess.  It has been a while.  And they did have a reason to die."

    "Exactly."

"Still.  The timing could be better, man."

"Eh, it's a good song, and it fits."

"I suppose.  Still worried about you, man."

    "We'll talk back at base."

    "Fine."

After the song was over, Sharky switched the music back to happier tunes.  However as he heard Annie's outburst, he frowned, his eyes narrowing.  "Skull 206, Serpent 1.  Remember where you are."

Shamu chuckled, "Dang, buddy.  Way to kill the party."

"I'm not here to party.  I'm here to finish this shit and go home."

"Yeah, but...  Ah never mind."  Hearing Jed's call over the radio, Shamu replied, "Good to see you made it, young Bronco."

Sharky added, "Your mother sends her regards, and tells me to make sure you remember to use the COLD water for your delicates.  Since she says you most likely remember the last time."

Shamu continued, "Oh, yeah, and the lotion is rather expensive to ship."

Annie had nothing to say in return; she simply frowned and felt her pride's wound bleed. Who the hell was that speaking, anyways? Some holier-than-thou asshole who thought he ruled the world? Jed, in the meantime, chuckled.

"And Ah'm sure it was delivered in one long, Yuktobanian-accented train? Ah'm also sure Sharknado told me not to be a dope and Hideki made a Miami Vice or Pulp Fiction reference to send along. Anyways glad to see y'all made it as well." He replied.

It then hit him after a second: he was going to be flying with Sharky and Shamu! Jed's eyes widened at the prospect and he couldn't help but feel a little amazed that two of the men he'd so revered would be fighting alongside him. It certainly was a morale boost...it would've been a bigger one if he'd been going home more often in the recent years.

Noel grit her teeth and pulled her plane harshly, banking just enough as she witnessed the flash from the CFA-44's cannon. Despite her best efforts, she could've sworn she heard the sound of metal shredding and the heavy caliber weapon digging into the skin of her Talon, though if the rounds hit anything, Rapture didn't think it was severe enough to let her know. She watched as the large fighter broke up into smoking panels and burning fuselage, wondering if the pilot got out alive and halfway hoping he hadn't. She wouldn't want to see them again. Lowering the throttle as the warning warble disappeared from her headset, she watched on radar as the Erusean pulled away, dumping flares and crossing her line of sight momentarily before Cerus' Sidewinder corkscrewed into its stomach and the plane snapped in half, the interior of the fuselage ripping to pieces as the warhead tore through its heart. Sighing in relief, she watched as her lead brought his fighter around, dropping to just above and slightly forward of her position. "Well, that's two each for today. A nice flight packed away."

"Yeah, I think we did a pretty good job considering this airframe is a bit outclassed in the close range department by those things. I've never fought one before now...I have to say, if Ustio wants a new air superiority fighter, the loadout capability of the CFA-44 and its sheer agility would go quite nicely with squadrons of multipurpose F/A-38s..." Cerus returned, hearing the chatter on the radio as the leader of the mission ordered them to stand down and not to pursue the fleeing Eruseans. It sat fine with him; there was no point chasing them if this were just a defense mission. IT would waste fuel and time to catch up and torch every single one of the Su-43s, but they had thoroughly stunted the attack with the rest of the air group and had crippled a good number of their squadrons. All in all, a job well done and something to learn from. "Noel, your ride still holding together?"

She waved it off as they moved in sync, banking to rejoin the flurry of aircraft belonging to the coalition, chuckling a little. "Eh, we'll have the ground crew check it out. I'm not totally sure if the bastard peppered me or not. Rapture's not squawking at me."

The blonde nodded, unhooking his oxygen mask and breathing deeply. "Good then. Wave Runner, this is Nier Lead. What's our orders for now? Do we fly CAP until released?"

"Nier, we've got relief aircraft inbound. Skull 1 will maintain CAP until further notice. You're cleared to RTB." Ryuubi replied. the CIC Officer spoke up afterwards.

"They had to scramble some Talons instead of more Hellcats; Callsign "Warcry 1"." He reported. Ryuubi nodded.

"Warcry 1, Stallion 2, this is Wave Runner, check in." She went on.

To the southwest, four fresh F-24s from VF-105 (The Flaming Stallions) and a quartet of F/A-38A Talons from VFA-75 (The Howling Hounds) sped along, all fully armed for a fight. As the UAF pilots had highlighted, the smaller Talons would be just as good as the bigger Hellcats in a fight.

"Wave Runner, Stallion 2 Lead, we're approaching Stahl from heading 195, 220 miles out." the man in the fowardmost F-24 radioed. Ryuubi gave him a quick acknowledgment.

Sharky chuckled as he replied to Jed, "All caps, no spaces, young one.  And yes, all of the above.  Sharknado had a couple of other things to say, but those can wait."  Looking down at Cortana's assessment of the radar tapes, he added, "Looks like you did alright out there."
