As the audible alarm blared, Josh yelled, "Driver, MOVE!"  The Stryker's defensive systems immediately fired the smoke grenades, shrouding the vehicle in a cloud of multi-spectral concealing smoke as it rapidly vacated its position.  At the same time the Trophy system, having detected the Strix round as it reached apogee, swung the interceptor turret mounted atop the gun turret so it was facing almost directly upwards, and fired.  A cloud of buckshot sprayed up at the mortar projectiles, shredding them so that all that hit the MGS was a hail of harmless shrapnel.

Greyhound 1-2 and 1-3 also took similar actions, the three wheeled fighting vehicles scrambling to find new firing positions.  As Greyhound 1-1 jerked to a halt in its new position, Josh barked, "ETA on that CAS?"

Meanwhile as the 20mm rounds from the M-89 kicked up dirt behind them, Scarecrow and Cyclops slid behind a rock, with Scarecrow clutching his leg.  "Aagh, fuckin' shite I took one!"

Looking over his partner, Cyclops said, "Looks like you took some shrapnel."

"Well don't just sit there, get the bloody thing out!"

"Yeah yeah, just take a breath.  On three.  One, two..."  On two, Cyclops yanked the piece of metal out of Scarecrow's leg using his multitool.

"Aagh!  You bastard you said on three!"

Smirking, Cyclops said, "It's out, innit?  Can ye walk?"

"Aye, just stick a tampon in it and let's get the fuck outta here."  As autocannon rounds beat a staccato on the rock behind them, Scarecrow said, "Er, on second thought..."

"Aye.  Greyhound 1, Druid 2.  We're pinned down by enemy armor, could use some help."

"Greyhound 1-2 copies.  We see you."  Turning to his gunner, Laz said, "Target IFV.  2 rounds AMP."

    "Identified."

    "Fire at will."

"On the way!"  The Stryker rocked backward once, then again four seconds later as Greyhound 1-2 fired two AMP rounds at the M-89 shooting at Cyclops and Scarecrow.

The Erusean LMG gunner may have escaped Sandy's GAU-19, but he couldn't escape Aztec, who was sitting in the back of the Bandit.  The Juregadarian laid his M60E8 on where he saw the tracers coming from and triggered off three long bursts.  Meanwhile, thanks to Hoot's erratic driving, the M92 rounds barely missed, kicking up clouds of snow and dirt in the Bandit's path.  Finally after a harrowing two-minute drive, the Bandit passed through the allied lines and screeched to a halt next to the tunnel entrance.

Sitting back in his seat, Hoot uttered a great sigh of relief.  "Boss, I really don't think I'm up to doing that again anytime soon."

Sandy, still pumped up, said excitedly, "You kiddin'?  That shit was EPIC!"

Hobbs said calmly, "Alright, we made it, now calm down, this shit ain't over yet.  Aztec, c'mon let's help these gents out a bit."

"Check."  Aztec hopped out of his seat, pulled his FD338 out of its case again, and began engaging infantry in the open.

    "RPG, Driver move!" Kousuke ordered.

At the same time, one of the two Trophy modules on the front of the machine met the rocket head-on as the Sting's defenses kicked into gear, all employed by a fat rectangle on the rear of the turret.  Scraps of the defeated round clanged loudly against the very front of the recon vehicle as Kousuke ordered Lee to light up the Eruseans near Lewis. The cannon thumped away while Kousuke got to work ordering his platoon around.

"Cobra 2-3, 2-4, prepare to withdraw to secondary defensive line! Cobra 2-2, assist Greyhound in engaging the hostiles in the town!" He ordered over the Bushmaster.

"Should we prepare to withdraw fully, Actual?" Esteban asked over his M41.

"Not until we can do so without gettin shot to fuckin bits!" Kousuke replied as a few errant rounds ricocheted off his vehicle.

Johann maneuvered his vehicle in a somewhat zig-zag pattern towards Esteban's position, firing rounds in the wake of the MGS's AMPs and Komodo's escape. Sgt. Perez's team staggered it's retreat to their Stingray in pairs, waiting until the smoke dischargers on their vehicle had fired off one salvo. Those furthest down the line (closest to the Eruseans) moved first, firing whenever the LMGs moved away from them. Perez had the most fun, getting to run to the Sting, climb up it, and then maneuver down through his commander's hatch and into the safety of the vehicle. Cobra 2-4 was promptly buttoned up after that and started to reverse under the platoon sergeant's cover.

In the meantime Lewis found himself and his team unable to immediately move. The Erusean riflemen had taken what seemed like an extra interest in his team, since they were the closest, and his Stingray was too far away to move to safely. For now all he could do was fight back. He had Mad Dog doing his thing on the LMG and Conman waiting for the RPG gunners to show themselves. The Sergeant fired off a 40mm HEDP round from his carbine's under-barrel launcher and peered through his scope. He started firing at what little he saw of the Erusean LMG gunners.

"Avalanche 36, Avalanche 36, this is Eagle 3-1, flight of four F-19s on station waiting for your orders. Loaded with three Brims, two GBU-12s, 400 rounds apiece; ready for tasking."

Kit-Kat was on the net with them in seconds, viewing his UAV's feed at the same time.

"Eagle 3-1 this is Avalanche 36, I have a battery of hostile mortars about nine clicks north of my 20, lasing now. Make runs northwest to southeast, be advised we have not determined presence of AAA in area. Watch for MANPADS in a village to the southwest of the mortars." He relayed.

"Affirm, Avalanche 36, we'll keep an eye out."

High above, the lead pilot in the flight of four F/A-19B Scorpion IIs from VMFA-96 selected his GBU-12s and rotated his shoulders. He turned on his Sniper pod and slaved it to the lasing coming from the UAV.

"Okay Two, make your run after mine. Two bombs each." He outlined.

    "Gotcha, Lead." His wingman replied.

The pilot banked to the left, flying up and over his wingman before swinging his nose due north and racing that direction for several miles. He then snapped right and began to descend below the scattered clouds, Paveways armed. With steady moves and an alert mind, the pilot dove down and adjusted his nose so he would pass over the Antlions almost perfectly. As he came down he released a precautionary burst of flares to protect himself. The symbology on one of his MPDs told him he had a solid angle as he roared in low and fast.

"Eagle 3-1, bombs away bombs away." He radioed.

Two green shapes fell in the wake of the fighter before the chunky jet rose, more flares in its wake. His wingman practically copied the motion move for move, except this time a pair of shoulder-launched Erusean SAMs followed the Scorpion upwards as the flares trailed away.

"Yeah there's fucking SAMs down there alright." Eagle 3-2 remarked.

The team was now faced with battered but still functional Erusean troops moving under cover of fire and freshly discharged smoke; Reaver acted quickly ordering Lucia and Frank to re-position and continue firing on the enemy while ordering the team to activate their thermals as quickly as they could. Using the UAV feed; the Lennish operative noticed Druid was pinned down.

"FUCHS, DUTCH! ADJUST YOUR FIRE TO SUPPORT DRUID!" Reaver shouted as he picked targets with thermal and UAV assistance, loud "THACK" sounds eminating from his marksman rifle. Lucia and Frank continued to hammer away with their combined rifle and MG fire.

"Copy sir!" Fuchs replied as he and Dutch quickly adjusted themselves to support Druid. The pair took aim and fired across the way to provide the operators with suppressing fire, another warped "WHUMP" could be heard as another 40mm MEI Mercury round zipped towards it's target.

Breaker in the meantime continued his coupled fire with Reaver as a shrill "BRAAAAP" sounded off from his AR55, picking off whomever came into his thermally enhanced view.

"Well don't I feel special!?" Dutch snarked, his submachine gun loosing several rounds towards the enemy.

"Knock the commentary off Dutch, stay on task." Breaker calmly radioed back.

"1-2, reloading!" Called Lucia as she tactically reloaded her rifle before replacing her view on target and cracking off focused bursts. The firefight continued at its feverish pace, neither side looking to give an inch. The violent orchestra blaring in Lucia's ears was now accompanied by jet engines; giving her some form of additional assurance.

"Silver 3-1 Point come in." Dodik radioed. He got a low crackle of static. The man looked back towards where the mortars had been and saw the black smoke from the Osean strike jets rising up.

"Silver 3-1 Point this is Vermilion 2-1 Point, are you receiving me?" He tried again. When two more bombs impacted the site he gave up. The scattered men around the mortars were trying to ward off the Osean aircraft with shoulder-launched SAMs, AP-2s, but they hadn't done anything just yet. He looked at his own command post where several more men with the weapon hid among the foliage and benches.

"Sapphire 1-1 and 3-1 Point be advised our mortars are down but we have incoming air support. Advise you dig in and maintain your fields of fire." He relayed.

"Sapphire 1-1 Point copies traffic." Kulmala radioed from her M-89 as it hid behind a three-story bookstore.

"Sapphire 3-1 Point copies all." Bazda radioed as he swiveled his M-89's turret.

"All Sapphire 3 Vehicles, engage enemy light vehicles directly. Priority is on the ATGM launchers and that mobile gun. The infantry will engage its equals." He added.

The man's turret rotated and started firing at Francoi's Stryker, moving his stream of tracers in anticipation of evasive moves by the Osean machine. The machine directly next to him applied the same train of thought with the MGS while their third surviving vehicle started returning fire at the Nords. Under Dodki's orders the surviving Hunter 20mm assisted on that front against Larthi's Stingrays.

In the town The LMG gunner who'd gotten fired at by Aztec fell back as rounds impacted his head, but his LMG was recovered and put into action quickly. Such an occurrence was becoming the norm for the firefight between the Eruseans and the UN mix: someone would show just enough and it would get blown off. Some men got wounded and some met their maker. Bazda's men were taking the brunt but they were easily returning it, sticking to their cover and waiting for Chipmunk and Cobra's people to move when they zeroed in shots. The heaviest casualties came when first Lewis's then Fuch's grenades impacted, killing and maiming several to include RPG gunners and LMG teams.

"Sapphire 3-1 Point, pull back until air support is on station. We'll cover you." Kulmala radioed.

"Roger..." Bazda replied quickly and reluctantly. He became a little more cooperative when two more of his M-89s exploded.

Under the cover of the reorganized squads of Sapphire 3 and Bazda's M-89, the remaining infantry retreated further back. They were now among trees and down a slope in what was a sort of half-bowl well out of the direct line of fire. It's slope had a sort of step a little ways before the rim, one that could act as a flat place for injured to lay. Wounded who had been moved were now able to get better care with the new terrain. Bazda himself moved back to where the M-89s were, letting up on the MGS for a brief moment while he moved.

"Vermilion 2-1 Point, my men are in cover...what is the status of our air support?" Bazda asked.

"Standby Sapphire, it's coming." Dodik assured, looking away from his Air Force counterpart for a minute.

    Somewhere over Central Nordlands
    November 20, 2045 (Local Time: 1015)
83 Km East of Vermilion and Sapphire

Major Jorgen Reinmann, formerly of the Belkan Air Force, kept his F-16XA Sakerfalcon low, especially as he slowed down to make his approach to attack the UN forces holding one of the tunnels. Even with F-02Bs stalking out ahead of him he was going to deny the enemy as few chances as possible. The rest of his four-aircraft flight stayed loose as they navigated the slowly roughening terrain. They would tighten up when they were close, when the need for bombing runs became so, if it became so.

"Jager E2-1, This is Vermilion 2-1, what is your ETA?" A voice spoke up.

"Vermilion, we are closing and will reach weapons range in about two minutes. Armament is three Talons, three 500-Sat, and full gun each" He replied.

"Understood, we'll start linking you a picture."

Behind him, Reinmann's Weapons Systems Officer started coordinating how they would employ their weapons as their counterpart on the ground talked to them. In the meantime an Erusean AWACS started directing the escorting Wyverns to deal with the F/A-19s and the F-28s providing top cover for them. The F-02s made a high-low approach, two of the six going high to get the attention of the Enforcers and hopefully spook the Scorpions, while the other four stayed low in ambush. As if to bring about even more firepower, forward Minotaur SAM batteries with the 9th Combined Arms Division, the "Farbanti Division" were ready to provide a sphere of safety for which the Wyverns and Sakerfalcons could use to escape pursuers.

Kousuke watched with satisfaction as the Eruseans that'd gotten closest to them retreated. Now was a really good time to start falling back before the whole division threw itself down on them.

"Cobra 2-3, 2-4, mount up and fall back through the tunnel. Proceed to LZ "Echo and establish a perimeter." He ordered.

"2-3 Actual copies all, El-tee!" Lewis called.

"Cobra 2-3 get outta there first, we'll cover you." Perez assured.

"Many thanks, mah friend." Lewis replied.

The commander of Cobra 2-3, under cover from the other three Stingrays in the platoon, first had his wounded brought aboard the machine while Mad Dog kept his LMG at the ready. There was little fire on their part to conserve ammo; it was a lot of aiming and waiting. When they finally were all aboard, sans their leader, he retreated and clambered up the machine to the turret, taking off his vest  behind the turret and stowing it quickly and hurrying inside to put on his other vest and CVC helmet.

"Driver, git us movin!" He ordered.

Bebop made a sharp left and turned the M122 around 180 degrees before roaring up the pavement and into the tunnel, turret pointed back in anticipation of some kind of last-minute sucker punch. the small arms fire from the Eruseans in the town continued to pop and zing as Perez's team mounted up and used cover from Johann's vehicle to move to safety.

"Cobra 2-3 and 2-4 are away." Lewis reported as his vehicle cruised down the tunnel, slowing to a safer speed.

"Roger, 2-2 get moving." Kousuke ordered as Kit-Kat brought his drone back in.

The timing probably couldn't have been better; the Scorpions were peeling off due to incoming enemy air, which probably meant that if they didn't run they'd be hit by the tool the Oseans had for so long felt was exclusive to them. He  glanced left as Johann's Sting hurried past and felt his driver give the machine gas before he turned around.

"All callsigns at Tango 18, all callsigns at Tango 18, this is Foreman. Fall back immediately, we're tracking a brigade-sized force inbound to your position. Retreat immediately and blow the tunnel." A voice called over the radio. It was an E-10A Umpire in the area that was tracking the Erusean ground advance.

Kousuke listened as his Stingray passed into the tunnel, moving fast like it was supposed to when it scouted. He pulled off his helmet and pulled up a bottle of warm water to take a long drink.

"All Cobra 2 Victors, report." He ordered as he set the headgear back on his dome.

"Cobra 2-2, up twenty and up."

"Cobra 2-3, up twenty and up."

"Cobra 2-4, up twenty and up."

"Cobra 2-1, up twenty and up." Kosuke finished. He double checked via Blue Force and saw he still had four Stingrays.

As the Erusians retreated, Zelazny pointed it out to Josh, who suggested the time had come for them to do the same.  This was reinforced by the AWACS' broadcast.

Hobbs and the rest of Komodo volunteered to pick up Druid and save them the effort of walking all the way to Veronica's Stryker.  Once the two snipers were safely in the back of the Bandit, Komodo drove back to the tunnel entrance.

Josh called for a phased retreat, with Komodo followed by the slightly dented Greyhound 1-3, then Greyhound 1-4, who had picked up CRT Chipmunk, Greyhound 1-2, and finally Josh and Greyhound 1-1.

The five vehicles made it through the tunnel safely and all checked in with Josh.  Sitting back in his turret, Josh grabbed his Thermos from its holder next to his station and took a swig of coffee.

"Jager E2-1, this is Vermilion 2-1, you have a clear corridor in."

Reinmann was coming over the second-to-last ridge before weapons' range as the paratroopers on the ground gave him the update.

"Roger that Vermilion." He replied simply.

In the back, his WSO feed targeting data provided by the troops in contact to their Talon air-to-ground missiles. A weapon in a similar vein as the Brimstone, the AM-22A Talon was designed to be fired from long range and attack ground targets at high speed from a top-down approach to defeat APS countermeasures. They were informed most of the enemy forces had been forces to retreat, and due to the value of the tunnel they couldn't afford to fire on moving targets.

Instead the WSO behind the Belkan coordinated with Jager E2-2 to target, instead, what the forward observers revealed to be Nordic Stingray APCs. The Talons were set to use their millimeter wave radar due to the long range. Each APC would be fired on by a single Talon. Reinmann talked to his other two jets and had them break off and come back around for a follow-on attack if needed. In the meantime he and E2-2 nosed up and went high to get a clear shot.

"Jager E2-2, wall formation." Reinmann ordered.

"Roger that Lead." Its pilot replied. The two jets went parallel to each other and nosed down just an inch. In the back, the symbology told the WSOs what they wanted to know. The circles on their radar screens turned to squares and the word "shoot" appeared in Erusean on their HMDs.

"We have solid lock!" Reinmann's WSO radioed. The man depressed the weapons release button twice.

"Jager E2-1, Mace, Mace!" He radioed.

At almost the same time as he wingman, he broke the formation, heading away from the other F-16XA, and dove, trailing flares and chaff to avoid being fired on by an F-28 or F/A-19 that might have noted them and decided to ignore the F-02s. In the meantime the Talons, four total, screamed across the sky, making sharp dives towards the Nordic APCs towards the end of their flight path.

    Below Jager Flight
    November 20, 2045 (Local Time: 1018)
Enroute to Vermilion and Sapphire's Positions

Even more Sabre M-89s, the rest of the batallion Sapphires 1 and 3 were from, rolled along and around highway, weapons pointed in different direction and ready to kill anything that pointed a barrel back at them. Besides the vanilla 20mm variants, ATGM carriers and short-range SAM/DEW platforms joined the larger advance. All of them were ready for battle, fully armed and the troop carriers full of crack paras. The troops in the village were passing down information to the men on what to expect. Even as the UN forces retreated, they kept up the fire to harass them as they left.

"Vermilion 2-1 Point, this is Sapphire 6. What's your current situation?"

Dodik picked up his radio as the commander of 17th Airborne's 1st Brigade, 2nd Battalion came on the comms net. Lieutenant Colonel Waris.

"Sapphire 6, enemy force is retreating. Advise we set up a perimeter as soon as we have the area secured. My men also report that the enemy has minefields on approach to the tunnel and they encountered enemy light forces inside the town. Expect plenty of traps." He reported.

"Understood 2-1 Point, get to it immediately we haven't got a lot of time." The Lieutenant Colonel ordered.

"Motherfucker, incoming!" yelled one of the drivers over the team net.

REVERSE REVERSE! GET TO THE TREES!" shouted Tikka over the roar of the engine. The Nordic APCs scattered and fired off smoke as the missiles rocketed towards them. One track was too slow and did not reach the woods in time and was turned into a ball of fire. The others crashed into the nearby treeline, shattering small trees and tossing up snow. One of the missiles detonated near Tikka's vehicle and slammed his head into the side of the track. His head spinning and ears ringing, he yelled, "DAMAGE REPORT? EVERYONE OKAY!?"

"YES, I AM FINE" came the call of his gunner, Elg.

    "Hjort, you okay up there?"

"Ja ja! I'm alive!" said his driver.

"Pantari 1-1, this is 1-4, we have a problem! The escape route is blocked." said the commander.

"Shit just keeps going form bad to worse." though Tikka. Grunting, he lifted himself and changed nets.

"Any units on this channel, this is Pantari 1-1, we are pinned down and cut off how copy!?"

"Pantari 1-1 this is Cobra 2-1 the tunnel is still open, get your ass outta their." Kousuke assured as his Stingrays reached the other side of the tunnel and continued on. He kept his voice as calm as he could.

The terrain began to slope downwards, opening up gradually towards a valley between a pair of sub-ranges that were separated by at least a dozen miles, maybe more, and dotted by small groupings of trees. On Kousuke's GPS he noted the rest stop along the highway as well as the town of Valstriff. Most important was a nonexistent oval deemed "LZ Echo". Civilians evacuating had been given directions to the place if they wished to evacuate from there. The Lieutenant keyed his mike to the right frequency and motioned to Yak.

"003 this is Cobra 2-1, we're enroute to provide security at the LZ. Can you give me a SITREP?" He radioed.

"We have several groups of displaced persons here, Cobra. We're tending to the wounded to the best of our abilities but some will need more intensive care soon." A Nordic Policeman reported (after some help from Yak).

"Understood, we're on our way." Kousuke said so Yak could pass on the word. The Marine switched to another frequency.

"Phantom 1-1, this is Cobra 2-1, we're inbound to LZ Echo, how copy?" He radioed.

"Roger that Cobra, we're about twenty minutes out." the lead pilot of a flight of UV-25B Titans radioed.

The Stingrays went roaring down the highway towards the LZ, where the vague shapes of police SUVs could be seen. Kousuke looked over in the direction of the rest stop and then heard a low roar. He waited, gulping softly, and then quietly deduced those were the F/A-19s running westwards to escape the encroaching Eruseans. He catiously opened his hatch and got out to look around. Sure enough two F/A-19s, one trailing smoke, were running away. Kousuke could only guess where the other two were. He looked back at the rest stop.

"Okay 2-2 deploy with me and 2-4 in a perimeter around the front of the LZ in an arc, start digging foxholes. Cobra 2-3, deploy along the back and provide rear security, scout out and see if there might be any routes that we're not seeing on GPS or otherwise." Kousuke ordered.

    "Cobra 2-2 copies all."

    "Cobra 2-3 copies all."

    "Cobra 2-4 copies all."

Kousuke looked back at the rest stop and considered it a minute, then decided to address it very briefly.

"Cobra 2-3, belay my last. Clear that rest stop and then proceed to provide rear security for LZ Echo." He radioed.

"Roger that sur." Lewis nodded. He rose out of the turret and looked towards the rest stop as he ordered his driver to turn towards it.

"Chipmunk 1 this is Cobra 2-3 Actual, requestin assistance to help sweep n clear a rest stop along our route." He added.

"Greyhound this is Cobra 2-1, I've got eyes on a farm west of the highway. Looks like it might give you sufficient cover. Suggest you deploy Komodo near us to give them a good setup." Kousuke added as his Stingray turned off the highway.

"Thank god, driver, get us moving!" yelled Tikka.

"Cobra 2-1, roger, hauling ass to you now!"

Hjort slammed on the accelerator, and the Stingray burst from the woodline and screamed towards the tunnel. The other Stingrays were not far behind, and the last of the coalition forces raced through the tunnel. bursting back into the open air of the other side, Tikka called into his radio, "Pantari is clear of the tunnel! All callsigns accounted for!"

The convoy continued down the road toward the LZ and Tikka breathed a heavy sigh of relief and opened his hatch. He cringed as he heard the sounds of jet engines, but was relived when he spotted the distinct shape of the F/A-19. He waved to the jets as they screamed overhead.

    Keying his radio, he said,

"Cobra 2-1, Pantari 1-1, inbound to the LZ, were do you need us?"

With the members of Chipmunk now loaded aboard the LZ bound Stryker of Greyhound 1-4 driven by Veronica and her crew. The team checked their gear, did a once over of themselves, and settled into their seats the best they could. Lucia sharply inhaled, lifting her goggles and lowering her scarf to draw in a few gulps of warm air to help calm her heaving heart. Breaker in the meantime prepped a wireless detonator that used a two stage trigger; one to turn off the safety while the other set off the chain. The older, helmeted ex-Delta operative presented the detonator to Lucia.

"Do the honors, I think you've earned it today." The demolitions expert said to the pink haired Sapina sitting beside her.

Lucia grinned almost childishly as she took the pistol-gripped device in her hand. Reaver in the meantime who was listening in on radio communications closely gave the order as soon as word of the surviving NDF troops clearing the tunnel came in.

"Lulu, the NDF are clear. Mash that detonator and drop the tunnel. No point in letting the Imperials get the chance to even glance at the thing."

"Now comes the fun part." Dutch smirked, taking a drink from his canteen.

"Sir." Lucia calmly replied as she depressed the triggers, the wireless signal transmitted to the demolition charges in planted in the tunnel setting them off in a choreographed-like sequence of thunderous explosions that reduced the once pristine tunnel into severed sections of collapsed rubble and frozen Earth. The violent action racing out both ends of the tunnel in a plume of ejecta, and smoke/dust topped off by a dull thud that could be felt inside the Stryker.

"Brilliant work everyone. That should stall them for some time." Reaver spoke as they continued towards the LZ. "Chipmunk."

    "Yes Sir?" Lucia replied.

"Very good for your first outing, you surprised me for being a walk-on." Reaver spoke with a slight smile, the operator pulling a granola bar out of a pocket on his chest rig.

"Thank you!...Sir!" Lucia said with a chipper tone, proud of her first day on the job.

Dodik flinched as the explosion sounded. He looked towards the tunnel and saw the cloud of smoke rush out and billow forward in every direction it could. Everyone else near him seemed to stop doing whatever they'd been working on and watched for a second as the work of Chipmunk 1 effectively cut the Eruseans off from pursuing the UN forces.

"Get back to work!" Dodik barked, annoyed his disciplined soldiers had been distracted by a simple explosion.

At the time the force was effectively reorganizing itself in the wake of the skirmish. The houses that Komodo had booby-trapped had been quarantined of soldiers and civilians after two men had been killed. Those mines along with the ones that had been set out in the open were marked down and passed along to engineers and EOD types for disposal. Houses were occupied for firing positions and the reliving forces were divvied up by the Colonel so they wouldn't be all packed together. He sent forward two platoons to relieve Bazda's men.

Dodik watched as Waris's M-89 slowed near his command post and the man got out, helmet on his head instead of his beret. The two exchanged salutes and Waris looked towards the fading smoke.

"What's left of tour recon company, Captain?" He asked immediately.

"A sniper team, possibly one vehicle, maybe two. My command post is also okay." He reported. The man nodded, frustrated but calm.

"Very well, you are declared combat ineffective, Captain Dodik. Retreat behind us and move to the rear to receive further instructions."

    "Yes sir."

Dodik yelled at his men and started walking towards his personal Hunter. Maris, in the meantime, walked back to his machine and quickly saw to it that he was on a radio.

"Vermilion 3-1 Point, this is Sapphire 6 do you read me?" He asked.

"Yes, Sapphire 6, what can I do for you?" One Captain Meyst Dubrvan replied after a minute.

"Bring your recon company forward. We need to find a way around the tunnel; it has been blocked."

"Understood Sapphire 6, we'll be moving out in five."

Maris acknowledged and hung up. He looked in the direction of the tunnel and frowned. There was entire division behind him, no two divisions that'd been waiting on that tunnel as one of the routes through the mountains.

"Shit." He muttered. The man decided to then report the situation further up the chain and got back on the radio.

Having noted the farm on the satellite overheads when they were planning, Josh radioed, "Already ahead of ya."

Hobbs chimed in, "Alright we're comin' to ya, Cobra."

"1-1, 1-4 requesting permission to drop Chipmunk at the gas station?"

"Granted.  Pick up Druid while you're at it."

Scarecrow growled over the radio, "Oi, sod on that, mate.  I can still do my bloody job."

Smirking at the ever-curmudgeonly Lenshire sniper, Josh said, "Scratch that 1-4, drop off Chips and rejoin on us."

    "Copy that."

The Bandit pulled up near Cobra's position behind a slight hill.  Aztec hopped out of the FAV and set up his FD338, pulling a thermal blanket over himself, while a few meters away Cyclops helped Scarecrow out of the jeep and the two of them also set up covering the highway.

Meanwhile, the three heavy hitters of Greyhound pulled off the highway, taking cover behind mounds of snow and farm equipment.  Greyhound 1-3's gunner and loader hopped out of the vehicle and ran around to the front to inspect the damage, finding that the vehicle's ERA panels were mostly intact, save for a few lucky repeat hits that had managed to set off a couple.

Orienting their 120mms and TOW launchers towards the highway, Josh said, "Alright, Greyhound's in position."  Looking at the feed from the UAV, which was still somehow loitering over the other side of the tunnel, he said, "Looks like we got a bit of time.  They're trying to regroup."

Reaver upon hearing the request to clear the rest stop replied, "Cobra 2-3 Actual, this is Chipmunk 1-1 Actual, we are en-route to provide assistance at the gas station." The marksman cleared his throat after releasing the button on his comm-link. In the meantime the rest of the team prepped their weapons and bantered.

"Dismounting again to hit a gas station. Makes sense." Frank asked with a raised eyebrow checking the feed tray on his MG124 before slapping the cover back in place. Lucia then replied, "Less resources for the enemy to sponge off of."

Reaver nodded, "Yes. We whittle away whatever little advantage the enemy can have."

"It also makes for a pretty light show." Dutch smirked, trying to get the team and Stryker crew to giggle as the APC approached the gas station. Breaker remained silent, scanning the comms and checking his equipment before they dismounted from a perfectly good vehicle yet again.

"Good, means they aren't trying to get to us or through the tunnel." Kousuke muttered as his Stingray eased backwards towards the cover of the trees and bush off the highway. The recon vehicle forced its way into concealment.

Kousuke deployed closest to the highway, with Esteban in the middle and Johann on the far side. The Marines poured out of the back, freshly rearmed, and set up among the natural plantlife. Some started digging holes while others got to sliding FIM-92M tubes and guidance kits off the sides of the vehicles. Kousuke dismounted and called over Johann.

"Sarge get your portable stove out let's see if we can't maybe get the guys some hot chow before they come at us again. Run through Perez's team and my guys, see if they're okay. I'll take yours and Leboue's when he gets over here." He said quietly. Johann nodded and let the man run off to check on his (the Staff Sergeant's) team.

In the meantime Lewis's men, all of whom still insisted they could do battle injuries regardless, made a very tactical exit from the vehicle. Mad Dog covered the other four from the right rear side of the machine, near the rear doors, while Lewis manned the fifty up top. The others, Conman, Heer and Swoosh all left in a swift manner and headed for a car to use as cover. The plan was to hit the buildings clockwise, starting with the information center.

"Gunner, cover the info center." Lewis ordered, dropping down so he could keep the MG aimed at the gas station. As bad as the man wanted to be with his fireteam he knew his place, for now, was here.

"Chipmunk, Cobra 2-3 is taking the info center. Advise uh take th garage." Lewis added at the Rosenthal team arrived.

Adjusting his slowly-stiffening ass in his seat to stave off soreness, Josh grabbed a protein bar from his vest pocket and washed it down with a swig of water from his hydration bladder.  "Cobra, we'll take first watch, so grab yourselves some rest and chow while you can.  1-3, how you looking?"

"We're up.  Ze ERA is a bit dinged, but we are at 99%."

    "Got it."

    "Ronnie?"

"Only got two Griffins left.  Bushmaster's full up.  Everything else is green."

    "Laz?"

"Full sabot, 10 low on AMP, out smoke.  Gun's green, track's green."

"Roger that.  Shift rounds into ready while you can."

    "1-2 copies."

"Andy, that goes for you too."

"Got it, sir."  With a deep breath to brace himself against the cold, Andy popped his hatch and clambered out onto the back deck of the Stryker, shifting ammunition from the spare stowage to the autoloader magazine, replacing a few of the AMP rounds that had been fired.  In the fight ahead, now that there was no need to deliver smoke at range, the relatively esoteric rounds would not be needed.  Better to use the slots for productive things.

    2nd Airborne Infantry Battalion's positions
    November 20, 2045 (Local Time: 1300)
    Southern Nordlands

"Won't be anywhere as easy as those mines sir; That's a lot of mountain above it." The Lieutenant in charge of one of two engineer platoons brought forward explained.

Colonel Maris watched as other engineers picked around the collapsed entrance to said tunnel. The entire division had effectively been ground to a halt while other routes were found around it. There were other tunnels they knew of prior, sure, but they needed to be secured. There was also the possibility of trails and passes that had been forgotten by the modern world and left to rot. The biggest problem was time; any detour was going to cost the division and the ones behind it time.

"Keep me informed of any updates." He said, returning the engineer's salute.

Maris walked back to his personal M-89 and climbed in through the back hatch. sitting across a map and accepting a tablet for his command and control duties. The Colonel had hoped the clearing of the mines and securing of the town would be toped by some way through the tunnel, but he'd have to find a crown to his victories elsewhere. The man asked for the radio and a line to Dubvran quickly.

"Vermilion 3-1 Point, this is Sapphire 6, do you read?" He transmitted.

Inside his Hunter, the man immediately pulled the radio off its holder and put it to the side of his face. His command group, second to last in the formation, was rapidly ascending a slope, following a two-lane road that snaked northwest, and hopefully across the mountain range.

"Reading clear, Sapphire 6." He replied.

"What's the status of your sweep?"

"We found a road sign about six kilometers back mentioning a tunnel, which we are slowing to recon. No other contact besides civilians trying to flee."

    "Understood, keep me informed."

Maris hung up and sighed, pressing a palm to his face. This simplicity of the obstacle got to him the most. If Dubvran didn't find them a route soon...

"Sir, we've got a unit under the callsign "Cubellios" that wishes to speak to you."

The Colonel accepted the phone and cleared his throat.

"Go for Sapphire 6, Cubellios." He said.

"Sapphire 6, this is Cubellios 6, commander of the 822nd Naval Infantry Battalion. I've been informed you require help in pursuing an enemy force and securing a tunnel through the mountain." Lieutenant Colonel Taavi Soini said from inside his Cavalier C2.

"You've been informed correctly, Cubellios, but the tunnel is currently blocked. I'm currently searching for another way around." Maris replied. He could smell just a bit too much cockiness in the Naval Infantryman's voice; too much energy.

"I've been ordered to assist you, being the closest unit. One of your fellow battalions seems to be still in the process of securing a town some kilometers from the tunnel's southern entrance. Perhaps if they have a solid position by then we can trap this enemy force, eh?" Soini went on, smiling and adjusting his sunglasses. He looked at his maps and displays as he talked.

"They'll have it secured soon; they know the timetables. Either way I assume you also want me to pass along what I know about this enemy force?" Maris replied, holding back growing contempt for the man's attitude.

    "Yes."

"My men report it's a light infantry force, mostly wheeled vehicles with ATGMs and autocannons. At least one tank destroyer armed with a large-caliber weapon. Supporting infantry, my men believe some may be elite forces or private contractors. They are in contact with fire support; my mortars were attacked by enemy fighter bombers."

"Understood, thanks for the heads up. Cubellios 6 out."

Colonel Soini sat back and stared at his view of the battlefield. He turned his head towards the man tending to the radios.

"Send word up the line, I want Close Air Support on station when we go in." He ordered. The man nodded and went to work.

    Cobra 2's position, LZ Echo
    November 20, 2045 (Local Time: 1305)
    Near Highway 18

    "Hey El-Tee!"

Kousuke looked over from his wrist computer and the map Johann and him were studying as Lance Corporal Collin North, Lewis's driver, approached them. The man motioned at a pair of civilians with him, two men about the age of most of the Marines. Kousuke nodded, held up a hand, and then walked over and poked his head into the back of the Stingray.

"Heya Yak! Come here if you would?" He called.

The Nordic translator hurried out and  looked at the two men. The three exchanged greetings before North explained things.

"They were pointing in the direction of the town nearby." North explained. A quick reference of the map showed the place was called Valstriff.

"Yak, ask them what's got them concerned. If it's a matter the local police can handle, refer them to the police." Kousuke said. Yak translated the request for an explanation, and then conferred with both men. He turned towards the Lieutenant.

"These men say that the Eruseans have troops in Valsriff. They spotted about 20 to 30 men entering the outskirts of town, well armed." Yak explained, remembering not to be too nervous.

"Do either of them remember anything else? Vehicles? Did they come by helicopter? Anything they feel we should know." Kousuke asked. Another exchange passed.

"They didn't see any vehicles, just men. They were telling people to get back inside their homes." He confirmed.

Kousuke let out a breath and pulled off his helmet to let his head breathe. He had the men released to go back to the latest fourship of MV-25s coming in and looked at Johann.

"Sarge, get on the horn and run it up the chain to start diverting MV-25s to another LZ for the time being. I'm gonna call the other units with us, coordinate a plan of action." He said.

"Aye aye, sir." Johann nodded. He hurried towards his own Stingray while Kousuke went inside his and put his CVC back on. He assumed his position inside his vehicle and checked to make sure the other units were around and online.

"Cobra 2-1 Actual calling Greyhound, Chipmunk, Komodo, and Pantari Actuals. Come in, Actuals." He radioed. Johann's conversation started up soon after.

"...This is LZ Echo, we are currently unable to accept further evacuation flights. Divert any inbound flights to alternate LZs. Repeat, divert all flights away from LZ Echo until further notice." he radioed.

"Roger that Cobra 2, gimme a SITREP." a female voice from some unknown location radioed.

"We have reports of enemy forces closing in on our twenty...request support if available."

"...Cobra 2 we have a flight of Bearcats available for tasking, callsign "Star 3". Standby for relay."

In the meantime Kousuke also passed down word through his platoon for people to start grabbing cover and taking firing positions. Most of the shooters had to hide behind trees and in bushes while other laid prone in Ranger Graves and shallow foxholes. The last refugees would be hurried aboard the tilt-jets and whisked away quickly; they'd then have to start turning people away.

Reaver scanned the area around him with his team, calling a quick status check before being hailed by Cobra 2-1. The operator pressed the key on his mic and replied promptly. "This is Chipmunk 1-1 Actual, go ahead Cobra 2-1 Actual." Lucia in the meantime simply shuffled around, keeping her attention fixed on the situation at hand.

    Sprinter 04
    November 20, 2045 (Local Time: 1306)
    Southern Nordlands

"Assassin Lead, this is Sprinter, have eyes on hostiles...I see two distinct groups so far. One in the trees west of the highway and the other in a farm. Count approximately eight vehicles in the first group and five in the second, how copy?"

"Roger that Sprinter, can you confirm any vehicle types?"

"Uhhh, looks like wheeled APCs...at least four have missile launchers, most of them are with the group in the trees...I see heat sigs, too. Human sized...stand by for threat priority list."

"Roger that, stand by to laze top priority targets for us and Jager."

The single EC-635 hung low, almost completely to the ground, as it picked out targets for the oncoming AH-66s and F-16XAs to hit. The sphere atop it's rotor axle and the chin pod twitched back and forth delicately, picking out anything that moved. The man operating these systems noted that there were MV-25s present, doing evacuation he noted.

"Assassin be advised, we have eyes on transports evacuating personnel. Check fire, how copy?" He radioed.

"Roger Sprinter, Assassin will check fire." The lead AH-66 replied.

The aforementioned Commanches were hurrying in low and fast, moving with the terrain while the F-16s stayed high and slow to avoid rushing in. The main force was comprised of several HTH helicopters heavy with Naval Infantry and heavy weapons. Their destinations were behind a grove of trees to the east of the highway and the terrain on the other side of the high hill that the UN forces sat next to. It was the only terrain that favored LZ for helicopters.

"Assassin 01 to flight, two missiles on each target; close in with rockets only when I say." the lead pilot radioed.

That's why the AH-66s were coming in first. In his cockpit, the gunner in Assassin 01 received the data the 635 was passing on and selected the Fang AGMs mounted on the outer pylons of the stub wings. The three other Commanches swapped and shared data while the 635 kept eyes on. The helicopters slowed and ascended over a ridge to the northeast of LZ Echo to pop up and fire; they'd use radar mode for their missiles, using data from the 635 to get the locks they needed. Almost simultaneously, all four popped up into view and fired two missiles each.

    "Assassin 01, Mace...Mace."

Assassins 01 and 02 fired on Cobra 2-1 and 2-1 as well as Pantaris 1-1 and 1-2. The other two fired on Greyhounds 1-1 and 1-2. Immediately they dropped back down to let the F-16s roll in for the next punch.

"Jager Lead, attack the farm first. Wait until the evacuation helicopters are clear to attack enemy forces in the trees." The scout helo radioed.

"Roger that...Jager E3-1 and E3-2 are in hot!" A female voice called.

Two F-16XAs swept in at low level, making passes over the farm. In their wake they left two 500lb bombs each. The aircraft were armed with six each of these, plus rocket pods containing smoke and HE warheads. The smoke was around to cover the transport helicopters.

Somewhere North of Jager and Assassin

    "Missile away!"

One of Dubvran's Hunters let go the ATGM atop its roof as the recon vehicles maneuvered towards a roadblock manned by Belkan Panzergrenadiers. They had a pair of Puma IFVs near what the Captain assumed was a pass through the mountains. The driver cut to the left and took them through some bushes into heavier cover as the Pumas fired away, the ATGM having failed to scored a mortal hit. The Captain grabbed his radio as his 20mm carriers (his own vehicle included) started shooting. Men dismounted for the firefight.

"Sapphire 6, this is Vermilion 3-1 Point! We've found a possible pass through the mountains but are encountering enemy resistance." He reported. The man slid out onto the ground next to hie vehicle, using the door for cover.

"Understood 3-1 Point. Can you take the pass on your own?" the Colonel asked. Dubvran peeked over the bottom lip of his window.

"Enemy has light armor, but I request reinforcements in case something goes wrong." He reported.

"Understood, we'll send a platoon. Hold tight 3-1."

The Captain thanked the Colonel and raised his M77 Carbine, firing on a Belkan MG team.

The missile warning blared, and the automated countermeasures system deployed smoke and chaff while the Trophy system swiveled to engage the inbound missiles.  Josh barked, "Reverse!"

The driver threw the M1128 into reverse, and the big assault gun lurched backward.  The Trophy system cracked, shredding the first missile, while the second, decoyed by the massive cloud of chaff before it, sailed harmlessly into the ground, burying into the snow before detonating.

Greyhound 1-2 got lucky, as the Trophy managed to nail both missiles with one interceptor.

Josh radioed, "Greyhound, pull back to secondary!  This place is burned."

Without missing a beat, the four Strykers popped smoke and retreated to cover.  They moved just in time, as the two 500lb bombs hit their recently vacated positions, the impacts jarring teeth in Greyhound 1-2 and 1-3.

About the same time the Rosenthal armor was lit up, Kousuke alarms all started going off. His APS and jammers kicked in to confuse the missiles. Gabriel put the vehicle in reverse and moved back, keeping cool as blast fragments tumbled across the front of his vehicle. Inside, his command group was thrown about among the maps and gear. When they stopped at the edge of the LZ Kousuke looked back to see his fellow passengers reorganizing.

"Kit-Kat, raise some air support!" He yelled.

"Gotcha, El-Tee!" The man's voice shouted back.

Nearby he heard the distinct sound of something being impacted. The man rushed to his periscopes, almost knocking his head against the one he wanted to use, and looked over to see Cobra 2-2's front half burning. Two Marines were helping a third away from the machine while it burned, flames licking the trees around it. Somewhere among the trees Stingers sailed upwards in pursuit of the F-16s that'd attacked the farm.

"Cobra 2-3, 2-4! Mount up and pull back to the southern edge of the LZ! Cobra 2-2 Actual, come in! Cobra 2-1 Actual, come in!" Kousuke ordered swiftly.

From behind the his Stingray stumbled out one Staff Sergeant Johann Chetty, dressed in his combat rig and holding his M41A2 but without a helmet. Kousuke could see red staining the man's face against his hair and skin. The Lieutenant only bothered to grab his M41.

"Yak, with me! Gunner, keep an eye out for hostiles!" He shouted, forcing his way through the mess in the back. The policeman nodded and hurried out, 12 gauge in hand.

The two ran across the clearing towards Johann, who was stumbling around in a daze. He started to raise his weapon sloppily as the officer and translator approached, to which Kousuke held up a hand. As they got closer they could see the rips from shrapnel, signs of burns...Johann was a mess on and above his shoulders. His left arm looked like it had several small cuts, too.

"Sarge, it's me! Lieutenant Junpo!" He shouted. The two went to the man's sides to help him walk.

"Can you hear me, Sarge?" Kousuke insisted, lowering his voice.

"Ja...Oh, I think I'm fookin fine, El-Tee...How're you?" He asked.

"Great, Sarge...but let's have you looked at. Any cut isn't a good one."

"Aww fook that. What do I look like, Osean Army?"

"This is a direct order, Staff Sergeant."

Johann got a little quieter after that. Kousuke looked back and saw the other three.

"And remaining Cobra 2-2s, sound off!" He ordered.

"It's Doc Feelgood, sir...me, F-Bomb and Wood made it but Wood is pretty fucked up. We're okay enough." 2-2's Corpsman reported. During his transmission Kousuke could hear labored breaths and moans mixed with cursing.

"Understood, move towards me...Greyhound, your ambulance got room? We've got four, two who're badly wounded." Kousuke radioed. He desperately hoped there was room.

In the meantime Lewis  had manned his fifty and was watching where the AH-66s had gone. He also had the 25mm pointed that way. The others were making a tactical retreat towards the M122, which had all its countermeasures fired up.

"Actual...request I git to guide'n those Bearcats. Saw where th helos dropped" He radioed.

"Pick out targets for em." Kousuke said as he helped Johann behind his own Stingray. He whistled to his RTO, Allison Marchs, who tossed him a first aid kit when she got the picture.

    "Roger that." Lewis acknowledged.

"Hey 2-3 Actual, I'm gonna send my Stinger guys near your 20 so they have a good LOS on those AH-66s next time they pop their heads up, how copy?" Esteban revealed.

"Roger that 2-4 Actual." Lewis nodded.

"Star 3, this is Avalanche 36, we have enemy helos operating in the area, those are priority targets, how copy?" Kit-Kat radioed in the meantime as the others around him reorganized the back of the M122.

"Star 3-1 copies all, ensure all friendly Victors are transmitting." The lead man amongst the AV-3s radioed as his tilt-jet attack aircraft hurried to the scene.

"All are transmitting...refer to Cobra 2-3 for additional direction."

"Roger...Cobra 2-3 Actual this is Star 3-1, do you have anything to add?"

"Star 3-1, enemy helos are hiding behind a ridge at our two, at least 6800 meters away according to my gunner."

It wasn't much but it was a place to start looking. In the meantime the platoon's foremost concern was reorganizing. The UV-25s had taken all they could and were running, leaving the few civilians left stranded to grab cover and refer to the few police officers for help. the local PD's solution was to grab the innocents and run; Kousuke had no objections.

Turning back in her seat to judge how much space was left in the Stryker, Veronica radioed, "Cobra, Greyhound 1-4.  We can take your criticals, and that's it, unless you want to start sitting in laps."

Josh chimed in.  "Ronnie, get movin'.  We're gonna fall back for now."

"Check.  Cobra, Greyhound 1-4 moving to you."

As the three heavy hitters of Greyhound 1 fell back in waves to their secondary positions, Greyhound 1-4 peeled off to Cobra's position to pick up their wounded.  Turning back in her seat again, Ronnie said, "Hey, Dutch, see if you can help these guys out any.  Rest o' ya, make some space for 'em."

"Roger that Greyhound, we'll cover you." Kousuke replied as he kept tending to Johann.

In the meantime Wood was brought over by F-Bomb and Doc Feelgood. As soon as the Corpsman could concentrate on helping the wounded Marine rather than carrying him, he leaned the man against the M122 and got to work while F-Bomb took a blanket he'd had draped over his shoulders and laid it on the ground so they had a makeshift stretcher to carry the man, if needed.

"Sir, how's the Staff Sergeant?" Doc Feelgood asked.

"He'll be okay for now; I don't see anything deep. His MIPS computer isn't screaming either so I can assume what I'm seeing is so far what I'm getting." Kousuke assured.

Johann had gone into a blank stare after Kousuke had sat him down and told him to simply click his teeth to show he was still conscious and alive. If Johann needed to talk, he was welcome. His weapon, which had a few scratches and scorch marks, was nearby though the man was in no condition to use his M41. Gabriel kept the Stingray running in case they needed to start running while Miller kept an eye out with the 25mm.

"Cobra 2-3, 2-4 are you all mounted up yet?" Kousuke asked.

    "Yes sir." Perez confirmed.

"Ready to go, El-Tee." Lewis said as he kept searching for the AH-66s.

"Okay, we're gonna start loading our casualties, get ready to move on my command. Pantari, say status?" Kousuke radioed.

While they waited for the ambulance, Kousuke poked his head back into the Stingray. Kit-Kat was still bust talking to the AV-3s as they came in to do something, anything against the Eruseans. The enemy was still hiding.
