"I'll do my best to make them comfortable with what I got on hand. I'll start with the worst off and go down the list from there." Dutch said firmly as he began to ready his medic bag so he could aid the stricken Marines caught by the Erusean airstrike. His mind automatically falling back on his medical expertise rather than his trademark snark. Reaver in the meantime motioned to Lucia and Fuchs.

"Chips, Fuchs provide cover to Dutch and the wounded. Breaker, Frank make room the injured."

"Understood..." Lucia shakily said as the adrenaline and fire began to build back up inside her. Picking up her rifle and placing it in her hands as Fuchs loaded another Mercury round into his M320. Fuchs remained silent as Lucia tried to catch up with the events that had just transpired.

"Just stick to your training Chips, we'll get out of this. Those Marines are counting on us." Fuchs said reassuringly. Reaver simply nodded as Greyhound 1-4 moved to Cobra's current position.

"Cobra 2-1 Actual, this is Chipmunk 1-5. I am ready to tend to your casualties, who are your most severely wounded?" Dutch called, hoping for a quick response from Junpo.

    Assassin 01
    November 20, 2045 (Local Time: 1310)
    Southern Nordlands

"Assassin, this is Sprinter, good effect on targets! Be heads up that there are enemy aircraft in the area, looks like AV-3s." the EC-635's co-pilot radioed.

"Roger that Sprinter, be ready to move. Don't get caught in the crossfire." the lead AH-66 replied. Even if the little scout helo had four AP-2s to defend itself with, heavy-armed attack tilt-jets weren't to be taken head-on by the machine.

The lead pilot steady lifted his Comanche over the top of the ridge, Fangs still at the ready. he spotted an APC moving at high speed towards one of the smoke plumes coming from the trees. He ordered his gunner to fire a single Fang at the target of opportunity while he searched for the AV-3s. Assassins 03 and 04, each with a single AP-2 on their wingtips, were the dedicated helicopter hunters for now. If 01 needed to back them he would but he also wanted to move in and destroy more of the APCs in the trees. Assassin 02 passed behind 01, heading left to pursue the other Rosenthal vehicles.

"Heads up, I see em. Four AV-3s moving in at low level, Assassins 03 and 04 are moving to engage...Jager, can you assist?" Assassin 03's pilot radioed.

"This is Jager E3-1, we'll send E3-3 and E3-4. My wingman has been badly hit; I'm going to escort him back to our cover." The lead F-16 pilot reported.

    "Roger, what's there ETA?"

    "Three minutes."

    "Roger."

While the AH-66s moved in, the EC-635 raised up from its position to relocate. In the meantime the HTHs were inbound, moving as fast as they could, spreading out into the appropriate formations. They kept low to avoid getting jumped early. They'd still be deploying into a pretty hot LZ, even if the UN forces were being dealt with by their own support.

Speeding across the open ground towards Cobra 2's wounded, Veronica barely had time to swear before the missile alarm blared followed by the resounding CRAACCK as one of the Trophy launchers mounted on top of the turret swiveled to engage the incoming missile.  "Mother FUCKER!"  Tracking the azimuth of the missile launch, Veronica swung the turret around and began firing the Bushmaster II, sending a hail of airburst rounds towards the Comanche in hopes of getting its head down, or, even better, knocking it out of the fight.

Popping smoke to get some more cover and buy a few precious seconds, Greyhound 1-4 finally made it to the treeline.  Under the cover of pine needles, Ely picked his way through the trees to Cobra 2-2's position, the M1126 creaking to a halt next to Kousuke's Stingray.  The ramp motored down with an electric whine and Veronica called out, "Alright gents, load up your two crits!"

Meanwhile, the heavy hitters of Greyhound saw the Comanche moving towards them.  Laz radioed, "Boss.  Got one of those gunships heading this way.  Plan?"

"Time to do some skeet shooting.  1 round then move."

    "Check."

    "Oui.  1-3 copies."

"Good."  To Andy, Josh said, "Load AMP.  Target helo."

"Set."  Andy began tracking the RAH-66.  When the fire control system spat out a firing solution, he said, "On target."

    "On my command."

    "1-2 on target."

    "1-3 ready."

    "Fire."

Greyhound 1-1 and 1-2 fired a proximity fuzed AMP round at the RAH-66, while Greyhound 1-3 launched a TOW-3 at the helo.  As the cloud of snow and burnt propellant obscured their hulls, Greyhound 1-1 and 1-2 kicked into reverse and pulled back, vacating their positions before the Comanche retaliated.  Francois waited slightly longer, making sure his gunner had a solid solution on the helo, before commanding his driver to back up as well.  The good thing about the TOW-3K was that it was almost autonomous, meaning that the launch vehicle could fire on the move, a major failing of previous TOW vehicles.

Doc Feelgood and F-Bomb helped Wood to the blanket and moved him to the M1126, loading him inside, Doc Feelgood first. Kousuke was already helping Johann towards the track.

"Hey uh...got room for two more?" the mohawked F-Bomb asked aloud as he left the Rosenthal Stryker, not to giddy at the idea of being left behind.

"Cobras 2-3, 2-4, cover each other and get moving! Engage the enemy helos ONLY if you have an opportunity!" Kousuke ordered, ignoring his jumpy subordinate as he helped Johann into a more comfortable position.

"Roger that, Cobra 2-3 is moving!" Lewis replied before directing his turret in the direction Veronica had fired her burst.

"Gunner, engage helos!" The Sergeant drawled.

The 25mm chuffed away as Lewis's M122 turned and sped out of the woods, going wide of the rescue mission underway. Perez backed up, deploying smoke, and fired several times before his driver completed a 180-degree turn as fast as he could and started fleeing. The two Stingrays burst from the trees and trailed after Greyhound, turrets aimed back to keep the Commanches engaged. The commanders even had their M312s guns atop the turrets aimed and ready.

"Cobra 2 Actual this is 2-3 Actual...what's the plan? What're we doing about getting past Valstriff?" Perez radioed.

"All Cobra Victors, skirt left of the town...do not enter the town. I repeat, do not enter the town." Kousuke radioed. His two remaining vehicle commanders acknowledged.

"Uh Cobra, this is Star Lead, may wanna go through the town...Beserker has placed several minefields in the terrain north of its position, how copy?" The lead Bearcat spoke up as he'd just finished scattering his formation.

Kousuke closed his eyes and drew in a deep breath. Think, don't react...analyze, placate yourself. The Battle of Thermopylae, Don't be a Captain America or Encino Man, hot girls at the gym...

"Roger that Star Lead...can you cover our retreat?" He said in a slow, deliberate tone.

    "Roger that Cobra."

"Okay, refer to Avalanche for instructions."

As Kousuke left the wounded to the care of Rosenthal, he retreated to his Stingray, yelling at the two Marines who were risking being left behind to hop aboard his Stingray if they couldn't grab a ride. Inside the machine, Kit-Kat sicked the AV-3s on the AH-66s that they were trying to fend off. Above, he could hear the faintest sound of their engines as they came to the rescue. Kousuke had his turret scanning to back up the Stryker.

"Okay Two, I see a pair of em chasing our guys, engage with cannon." Star Lead called out.

His gunner rotated his head, the multi-barreled Gatling following his gaze, and tracked one of the AH-66s after Greyhound had engaged it.

    Assassin Flight
    November 20, 2045 (Local Time: 1313)
    Southern Nordlands

The AH-66 moved as it was engaged by the 30mm M1126, heading left and ascending to avoid the fire. It managed to get out mostly intact, but the encounter had given it some nasty scrapes. It was running parallel to the retreating M122s as they fired on it. Lewis's rounds impacted near were Veronica's rounds had dug into the skin, and Perez's walked up the side and into the right engine's territory. The pilot turned away as Perez fired and dropped towards the terrain, withdrawing his damaged machine from the fight.

In the meantime, the AH-66 pursuing Josh and Francois took evasive action. It moved up as soon as it saw the muzzle flashes, sticking to its speed, and banked right as it moved over them, flares and chaff shooting out like a fireworks show. This took it inside the attack of the TOW-3. The helo then moved away towards the hills. Assassin 01, in the meantime, picked up the slack with his 70mm rockets. He made a single run at Greyhounds 1-1 and 1-2, leading the weapons and unleashing two eight-shot bursts from his 24-round reserve.

With the APCs on the ground fleeing, now the problem became the AV-3s. Assassin 02 turned towards them as Assassin 01 came off his attack run, both helicopters having selected their AP-2s. Assassin 04 was also moving in to help, staying fast and low to avoid being an easy target. The lone AH-66 came at the AV-3s from their two o' clock and fired a single AP-2.

    Star Lead
    November 20, 2045 (Local Time: 1315)
    Southern Nordlands

Star Lead's pilot, a young First Lieutenant, watched as tracers flew from their M301 cannon at the retreating Commanche. The gunner moved the stream of bullets where Perez's shots had started the job. The man watched with satisfaction as the Erusean attack helicopter started to fish tail, and then fell from the sky, taking its crew with it.

"Good shooting, Gillian." His pilot noted.

Star Lead banked his AV-3 to the right looking around for another AH-66 to grease. The tilt-jet moved through the air like a finely-tuned sports car, able to out-run the Commaches. The gunner swept his gaze from side-to-side, looking for targets.

"Star 1-4, going evasive! Bandit at our two!"

The First Lieutenant looked over and saw a flash of light streak up from the ground, quickly revealed to be an AP-2 fired by an AH-66. Star 1-4 deployed a flurry of countermeasures, pnly to be met by another AP-2 from the Commanche, and then two from somewhere else. Star Lead tracked the shots that were soon to claim 1-4 to an EC-635.

"Gunner, engage that scout helo! Star Flight, break into pairs and engage!" He ordered. A second later Star 1-4 was gone, leaving Star 1-1 to fight on its own.

Despite that, the mission remained clear. Star 1-2 split off to engage Assassin 01 while Star 1-3 slowed and went low to gun Assassin 02. Star 1-1 tilted his engines all the way down to gain some speed and moved towards the space behind the Commanche that'd just downed his number four. The Gunner swung the cannon towards the scout helo as it rose and pulled the trigger, sending more tracers downrange. the ammo count was almost impossible to track as the M301 buzzed away.

    "Incoming!" yelled Pantari 1-2s commander.

"Not this shit again!" said Tikka as he felt the APCs suspension tilt to the side again. The Stingrays Trophy system instantly rotated to engage the incoming projectiles. As they neared, the Trophy system fired and shattered the lead missile. The second one lost a pair of fins and skidded to one side, slamming into the snow before exploding. The blast lifted the front right of the M122 and slammed Tikka into the side then onto the floor of the APC. Pantari 1-2s Trophy had also preformed adequately.

    "Everyone alive?" asked Tikka.

"Ja! We are good to go!" Tikka swung his RCWS turret to see the last RAH-66 drop below the horizon. Then he heard the distinct roar of an AV-3. He watched as they engaged the Erusean choppers with a grin

"Guardians from Odin." he muttered, smiling. "Driver, get us out of here."

"Sir, we're all loaded up!" Allison reported.

Kousuke nodded and looked over at his two Marines who lacked a Stingray. Even if they had a ride on the Stryker, he still felt like he was leaving them behind. Kousuke kept calm still, and simply nodded from behind his vehicle at them.

"F-Bomb, Feelgood! Good luck!" He shouted. They both didn't say anything at first, until F-Bomb gulped.

"Shove it up their fascist asses, sir." F-Bomb said with an icy tone. Shove it up their fascist asses indeed...

Kousuke mounted up and the lead M122 of Cobra 2 sealed up before reluctantly rolling forward to make a U-turn around Greyhound and get moving. Miller  swiveled the turret towards the Erusean lines, searching for the AH-66s as they kept lurking around. Everyone inside stayed relative quiet; even Kit-Kat had stopped talking with the AV-3s plenty fine on their own. Johann kept clicking his teeth as they bounded along.

"Cobra 2-3, 2-3...2-1 is moving to rejoin you." Kousuke radioed.

    "Cobra 2-3 copies all." Lewis.

"Cobra 2-4 copies all." Perez added.

Kousuke's Cobra burst from the trees and rolled towards the road and his remaining charges. All three machines went full speed towards the town, sticking close to road in preparation to roll onto it and run through town.

"All victors be heads up, Cobra 2 is away and moving." Kousuke reported.

    Star vs Assassin
    November 20, 2045 (Local Time: 1319)
    Southern Nordlands

Star 01 went low and fired a long burst from its 301, aiming for the scout helo. The pilot preemptively threw out a flurry of countermeasures to avoid becoming the victim of another AP-2, constantly looking at the AH-66 as he navigated the terrain. The EC-635 turned to engage, only to get a line of armor-piercing rounds across the front windscreen. The pilot then yanked his machine into a hard turn, grunting against the Gs as his tiltjet seemed to drifted. The AH-66's own 20mm cannon. Star Lead heard bullets scratch the side of his machine and banked to the right while his gunner swung the Gatling at the Erusean and fired in an attempt to get him off balance. The two streams missed each other's targets by feet.

The Assassin Commanche rose up and pressed to go over the AV-3, deciding now might be a good time to get the hell out of dodge. The radio calls indicated that the other two aircraft in the flight didn't have any advantage and if they were lost that mean it'd be one Commanche against three Bearcats.

"Assassin Lead, this is 04...I'm bugging out." He called.

"Understood 04, we're right behind you." The flight's lead radioed grumpily. The man had failed to catch any serious prey today; he intended to come back later with a vengeance.

Assassin 01 still threw an AP-2 at the nearest pair of AV-3s in protest before the two AH-66s sped low and fast around the hill near what'd once been the LZ and headed towards the tunnel and the positions of 17th Airborne's forces. The two snaked from side to side, keeping up their momentum as they evaded. Star 1-2 and 1-3 fired as far as their guns could reach while Star 1-1 retreated to safety.

"Greyhound, Cobra, Pantari, you're clear...proceed to Beserker's position." Star Lead breathed out.

    Berserker 1-1
    November 20, 2045 (Local Time: 1322)
    8 miles Southwest of Valstriff

Second Lieutenant Abel Fredrick, 1st Platoon, Bravo Company, Osean 2nd Marine Tank Battalion watched the town from his commander's cupola atop the M7A1 Crusader Main Battle Tank (MBT). The Eruseans had been so caught up in securing the place they'd failed to notice the eight tanks west of the freeway, hidden and camouflaged by local plant life and holes dug in the ground. They also hadb't appeared to notice the scattered minefields marked by low-sitting Target Reference Point (TRP) markers. All the better in his opinion.

"Berserker 1-1, this is Berserker 6..."

The Lieutenant keyed his CVC's mike.

"Go for 1-1." He replied in a low voice, keeping his binoculars up.

"Berserker 1-1, need you to report on traffic moving down Highway 18, how copy? We've got a few freindly units and they'll need to move along the route to reach your position and avoid the minefields." His company commander, Captain Galveston, requested.

Abel gave a quick acknowledgement of the order and looked to his right towards the freeway. The stream of traffic was heavy and confined to the southbound (right) part of the freeway, as enforced by local police. It looked less like the people of a first-world country trying to get to safety and more like a bunch of Persian Sea Region refugees fleeing a drought. Everything from modern Saabs to people on foot and horseback moved along at a steady pace. Abel felt sorrow for them but didn't express it; he had a job to do.

"Berserker 6, report is as follows: traffic is heavy going southbound and at a slow pace...advise our friends use the northbound lanes." He radioed.

"Understood, will relay...standby to move to firing positions with Berserker 2 on my command." Galveston replied.

    "Berserker 1-1 copies all."

    "Berserker 2-1 copies all."

"Cobra, Greyhound and Pantari Actual this is Berserker 6, Berserker 1-1 and 1-2 have been alerted to you approach. Stick to the northbound lane on approach to their position." The Captain said after his two platoons had confirmed they'd move when told.

For what seemed like the millionth time that day, the inbound ordnance warning blared in Greyhound 1-1, and the APS cracked off.  However, there were too many rockets for the Trophy system to nail all of them, and the crew heard a loud boom as a pair of HEDP rockets hit the side armor of the M1128, detonating a pair of ERA panels.  Fortunately, the ERA deflected the copper jets of the rockets' warheads, keeping the vehicle's composite armor unharmed.

Greyhound 1-2's driver managed to swerve at the last second, causing the rockets to just barely miss.  "1-1, you okay?  Saw you take a hit," Laz radioed.

"Yeah, we're good.  ERA saved our asses.  Greyhounds, pull back."

"1-4 copies.  Loading up wounded now."  Sticking her head out of the unused platoon leader's hatch, Veronica turned to Kousuke and said, "Don't worry, El-Tee.  We'll take good care of your guys."  Popping back down into the hull, she turned around to see that the wounded had been loaded, and Dutch was already beginning to administer to them.  "Excellent."  Returning to her station, she raised the ramp and radioed, "1-1, 1-4's oscar mike."

    "Roger that."

    "Ely, get us movin'."

    "Got it."

The 4 Rosenthal Strykers formed up and followed the Osean M122s.  As they drove down the highway, Josh received Berserker 6's call.  "Copy that, Berserker.  Coming down the northbound lanes."  Switching over to the platoon net, he said with a smirk, "Ready to play in oncoming traffic, boys and girls?"

"My muzzer always said zat was a bad idea.  Good thing I was ze rebellious type," Francois replied with a chuckle.

"Good.  We're taking the northbound lanes, gents.  Keep us from getting bogged up behind the refugees.  Passing through Berserker's lines."  The situation report was unnecessary, as the requisite information was already up on each vehicle's navigation screens, but Josh did so out of habit.

Lucia's heart once more spiked in pace as the pink haired operator laid eyes on the wounded men that were now occupying the wheeled AFV; her eyes widening somewhat at the sights and sounds around her. She began to breathe, keeping her weapon at her side. Despite her training she was still green and her first taste of battle was a roller coaster to say the least.

"Think of Nomee, think of Pina, stay focused on the battle. Let Dutch worry about the Marines..." The young Sapina thought as she watched Dutch go over the wounded at a quick but calm pace.

The Assaulter/Medic spoke up to the others, "You're in good hands gents."

Reaver silently acknowledged as he continued to scan the comms while the others checked their ammunition and gear, Breaker looked to Lucia and reassured her.

    "Lulu, keep it tight."

Lucia nodded as she took a drink from her canteen, "I will."

Johann nodded weakly and then winced at the pain he was feeling; Wood remained silent, simply staring up at the ceiling of the M1126 as it hurried along. In the meantime F-Bomb and Doc Feelgood thanked the PMCs for the wounded men and, with nothing more to do, simply held on. Both felt a little more than naked with nothing more than their sidearms. F-Bomb was tempted to ask if there was a spare rifle laying around.

In the meantime Kousuke and his remaining M122s hurried along the road, turrets facing away from the line of refugees as they approached the outskirts of the town. Kousuke didn't have to tell any of his guys what to do: move fast, stay buttoned the hell up, and stay spread apart. They'd blast down the highway, shoot back at what they could, and then get to the tanks. The AV-3s were retreating, and with that their air support. On the flip side the AH-66s were also running. It was good enough for Kousuke; he kept his M312 on a swivel. The man dared a look towards the refugees and grimaced, too.

Noticing the awkward looks from the two marines, Goalie said over the engine noise, "Missing your rifle?  There's a couple in the stowage boxes.  You can grab one when we stop."

    The Town of Valstriff
    November 20, 2045 (Local Time: 1324)
    Central Nordlands

"How many of the would you say there are, sir?"

Lieutenant Henrik Sasi lowered his binoculars and looked at his senior sergeant.

"I spot about ten...no eleven." He replied. The man glanced to his right at the M84 machine gun team while they tracked the lead vehicles approaching the city. He raised his binoculars again to watch the machines.

"Okay Italia, you're dismissed for now. Get back to your position." Sasi ordered. The man nodded and hurried to the stairs of the attic, working his way down while staying hunched over. Sasi went to his radio.

"Ruby 1 to all Ruby elements, standby to engage enemy vehicles at 100 meters after they've been topped. Concentrate on the lead vehicles to hold them up further, and then engage at will at they move to defend. Remember the ROE." He said.

As the man kept observing, making himself as small a target as possible, he hoped and prayed his men would keep in mind that they were walking a tightrope with the civilian population. They were already invading; no need to injury the natives, too. The LMG team near him talked between themselves as they tracked the lead elements, coordinating with two M92 gunners in the floor beneath. On the ground floor six riflemen and another machine gun team were set up to be the main source of fire, with six more in reserve. The time they'd been given to dig in had only allowed them some portable jamming equipment to help mask their presence or at least slow detection.

Sasi had this setup across four houses, with other platoons doing the same, all of them having at least one house close to the highway to watch the refugees and  further harass UN forces as they flowed through here. The local police had been given a very clear message: they would disarm and only direct traffic. Then, if they so wished, they could flee with the rest. Otherwise they would be stripped of their badges. Sasi looked at a pair of Nordic policemen at the edge of town. They'd be the ones to start the ambush; the "men" were actually cybernetic assassins. One of many planted throughout Nordlands over the past year to help get the ball rolling on capturing strategic targets and eliminating important people.

Noting the approach of the UN vehicles, one of the cyborgs held up a hand to stop them and walked towards them. Everything about him looked human, and he acted human. His movements were crisp, disciplined, and fluid. He wouldn't last long (they'd likely gun him down as soon as he drew his weapon) but he had no conscious. No feelings other than those related to military thought. How to survive and how to fight. His jacket was mostly unzipped for easy access to the R19 Machine Pistol.

"Thanks..." F-Bomb said with a sigh. He felt a little more embarrassed, now. A Marine and his rifle were lauded as inseparable; losing it felt like a personal insult.

In the meantime Kousuke pulled his head away from his main display and frowned.

"I'm getting some interference; likely jammers in the town. All Cobra Victors, keep up scan." He said.

    "Cobra 2-3 copies all."

    "Cobra 2-4 copies all."

The Stingrays spread across the lanes, turrets rotating back and forth slowly. Kousuke shifted in his seat and kept a hand near the M312's controls.

"El-Tee, some cop's trying to stop the Rosenthal guys." Gabriel spoke up. Kousuke frowned; why the hell would a cop be directing traffic near an occupied town and asking UN forces to stop.

"Roger, Greyhound 1 Actual, this is Cobra 2 Actual, please tell me you're not gonna stop for that cop." He radioed.

Josh said with a smirk, "Never been one to walk into a speeding ticket."

    "Uh, boss?"

    "Yeah, Andy?"

"There's something... Off... about that cop.  Take a look on thermal."

Josh pulled up the thermal feed from Andy's sight.  "You're right.  Unless he's half ice cube, he's nowhere near as bright as he should be.  Cobra 2, Greyhound.  Keep your eyes on that cop.  I don't have a warm fuzzy about this.  Greyhounds, watch the buildings."

    "Check."

Kousuke turned his sights back towards the cop and examined him. His thermal signature seemed fine, but as Kosuke stared more he started to see that it was odd. Specifically, his thermal signature looked TOO perfect, almost unmoving.

"Yeah I see him, Greyhound...We'll keep our fifty on him." Kousuke said, swiveling the machine gun so it was pointed in his general direction but not directly at him to avoid causing panic.

    Central Nordlands

The Policeman frowned as the vehicles showed no signs of slowing and waved his hands with more vigor as the UN convoy closed. His partner walked back to the vehicle and opened the front door, pretending to reach for the radio. Instead he was reaching towards a riot gun. Inside was a 40mm round, though. He looked out the passenger's side window and saw the machines were very close now. His partner shouted to him.

    "Stop them now!"

While the first android withdrew his R19 to try and at least slow the convoy in surprise, the second grabbed the launcher and expertly backed out of the vehicle, moving like...well, a robot. Through his eyes he locked onto the second vehicle in the convoy and raised the launcher at the angle needed to hit the front slope of Greyhound 1-2. With programmed precision he launched the weapon at the desired angle and then drew his own R19, using the car as cover.

From his position, Lieutenant Sasi grimaced but kept the plan rolling. Trying to stumble back to avoid more problems would do just that.

"Open fire! Fire, fire!" He radioed.

First came a rapid burst from an M23, followed by many more. The M84 LMGs opened up with thundering reports, aiming their bursts for the optics and tires of the machines. RPGs attacks, each  in pairs, were aimed at the back half of Greyhound and the front two vehicles of Cobra, 2-3 and 2-4 to be exact. Two 40mm grenades were launched short of Greyhound 1-1 to try and get it to halt. The whole affair forced several refugees into the snow beside the road. Three cars tried to bolt ahead into the empty lane. One of the vehicles, a moving van, got rear-ended by a station wagon trying to get past it.

More vehicles, caught in the increasing panic. Six vehicles of various kinds scattered out onto the road in the path of the UN vehicle's advance. The actual Nordic PD officers trying to control traffic could only blow whistles and try to get people who hadn't gone into a frenzy to the far side of highway they were on, where they could huddle against the concrete barriers for safety.

For what seemed like the millionth time that day, the incoming projectile alarms blared.  "Contact! Both sides! Both sides!" Josh barked into the radio as the 4 Strykers pushed through the ambush and turned off the road to get into position to fire.  The 40mm rounds couldn't penetrate the Strykers' armor.  The rockets were intercepted by Greyhound 1-3 and 1-4's Trophy systems.  The LMG barrage managed to puncture a few of the tires, but the central tire inflation systems and the run-flat tires managed to keep the vehicles rolling.

Once they were clear of the immediate danger, it was time for Rosenthal to take their turn.  "Got multiple targets in those buildings on backscatter," Andy said, his voice having risen two octaves in pitch.

    "Drop 'em."

"Copy!"  Greyhound 1-1 and 1-2 fired a pair of AMP rounds at the buildings, 1-1 taking the left side of the road while 1-2 took the right.  At the same time, 1-3 fired a pair of TOWs at the right building.

From the other side of the ambush, bringing up the rear of the column, Komodo saw the ambush.  "Sandy!" Hulk barked.

"On it, boss."  Sandy reached over to his left, grabbing a large green tube strapped to the side of the Bandit's roll cage.  "Scarecrow?  Ya mind?"

"Take it, mate."  Scarecrow handed up a box.

Accepting it, Sandy quickly snapped the CLU to the tube of the thermobaric Javelin.  Locking on to the building not engaged by Greyhound's TOWs, he called over the radio, "Komodo, Javelin out," and squeezed the triggers.  With a whoosh of compressed air, the 43 inch long missile leapt out of the tube and rocketed skyward slightly before changing direction to track towards the building on a direct attack profile.

The CRT team on the inside of 1-4 jostled around as their vehicle pushed through the ambush by the hostile black operatives who blended in to the mess of Nordic police officers and civilians. Breaker hissed as he grabbed his AR55 and shifted his posture, watching the feed from the Stryker's optics via his goggles.

    "Underhanded fucks!"

Lucia who was also watching the feed looked to her team leader and Veronica, "What's our next move?"

Reaver replied, "We return the favor. Alright 1-4. Do you want us to disembark or hold our position as is in case we need to displace?"

"Whatever we're going to do we need to make up our minds fast." Logan shot back over the comm link, his voice turning to a slight growl at what just happened.

"Greyhound, don't slow down; that's exactly what they want us to do." Kousuke radioed in a distracted tone as he slowed his own force to deal with the traffic and avoid running headlong into deeper layers of the ambush.

With a hard thump, Gabriel ran the "cop" with the R19 over and continued towards the town, swerving with all the control he had to avoid hitting civilian cars or the people on foot. The others inside the machine held on as their aspiring rallycar driver maneuvered back and forth.

"Sir, I can see the source of some of that fire. They're jamming stuff pretty good but they can't jam their own bullets." Miller reported.

"Gunner engage at will, 25mm!" the Lieutenant called.

His gunner leveled the Bushmaster at the side of the nearest house on the left and pumped multiple rounds into the top and middle stories of the house. Lewis and Perez fired on the bottom story where much of the fire had come bursting from.

"Okay boys 'ere we go; get stay down n shut up unless we gotta jump ship!" Lewis called back to his footmobiles.

"Great...I'm sure Belinda' gonna be real happy this is how I'm spending my anniversary." Brian remarked sourly.

"Well then happy anniversary, Conman! You're about to get shot in the face!" Mad Dog laughed wrly and a few bullets clanged off the machine's armor.

The android attempting to stop the convoy ran to the left and turned towards the convoy, catching Hulk and company's FAV as it came into view. He aimed his first purst at the vehicle's GAU, and then aimed a second burst at Sandy's neck and hands when the man rose and fired the Javelin. His burst was cut short when Cobra 2-1 rammed him down. The force of a 13-ton vehicle slamming into him was enough. His partner, out of the immediate line of fire, ducked, launcher in hand, and pulled a new round out of his jacket. He hurried off the highway and moved towards the action, staying low to avoid immediate attention.

"They're leaving the highway and slowing, keep them there!" The Lieutenant called as the Strykers wheeled off the road.

Even as they moved, the Eruseans raked the machines with fire, those with scoped weapons aiming at the Trophy launchers. the M84s just chattered away, aiming bursts at anything that looked important. Two more 90mm rockets came from the house the platoon leader was in before the return fire started doing its thing. The Erusean officer had hoped to kill at least one of the Strykers, but his shooters failed to do so before it seemed like the entire world came down on his house.

The house was first rocked by an AMP round, which impacted the floor the Lieutenant was on. As others took cover from the derbies cascading down, 1-3's TOW impacted from above and blew out the floor of the third story, splattering debris down onto the floor below. The thermobaric warhead finished off the second floor, leaving the riflemen on the first floor dazed and grabbing to cover. The house directly right of the road, a huge hole in it's right side near the top, responded with two M92s aimed at the tires of Greyhound 1-2. Their surviving LMG gave a burst to "The Bandit" before aiming at 1-2's weapon itself.

Cobra discovered that almost every house seemed to contain Erusean infantry and jammers. Another MG nest opened up near the first offramp past the town's limits. In the floor beneath, an ATGM team waited for a shot; the highway was too cluttered from fleeing people and swerving civilian cars. From his own position, one of the snipers posted throughout the town-turned hornet's nest was more content to use his M94 anti-material rifle and multi-spectral camo to track the UN forces barging through town and relay them to other units who'd keep the ambush up. The chaos on the freeway had waned...a little. People were just huddling against the ground or nearest car now as the fast-moving combat vehicles weaved through them.

The Greyhound Strykers had taken their support by fire position out of the effective range of the two Erusean strongpoints, so fortunately the majority of the fire was ineffective.

As it darted through the ambush, Hoot popped smoke from the Bandit's roof-mounted smoke dischargers, but not before a pair of the Cyborg's rounds hit Sandy as he stowed the Javelin and returned to his GAU-19.  "Son of a bitch!"

    "You hit?"

"Uh, wait one, boss."  Sandy promptly dropped down out of the turret to check himself over.  One round had hit him in the head, fortunately being deflected by his helmet, while the other had ripped the carbon fiber knuckles off his assault gloves.  "I'm good...  Got one hell of a headache, though.  And these were my FAVORITE GLOVES!" the former Delta operator growled.

"Yeah, yeah, I know.  Now get back on the gun!" Hobbs barked as he used the M320 attached to Hoot's HK416 to fire a 40mm grenade at the house on the right side of the road.

Meanwhile Aztec swung around to suppress the LMG gunner while Sandy looked himself over.  The FAV zoomed past the ambush and Greyhound's support position, taking up position behind the Strykers.  Sandy promptly grabbed another Javelin tube, slotting it into the CLU as he prepared to support Cobra's move.

"2-3, 2-4, follow my tracers." Kousuke ordered as he whipped the M312 at the latest house shooting at them and fired a burst. He looked at his Blue Force tracker and saw the Rosenthal detachment was still holding just north of the town.

"Greyhound, MOVE." Kousuke said in a calm but loud voice.

"Come on, come on yuh stubborn bastards...get moving." Lewis whispered to himself as he followed his Lieutenant's shots. Perez followed his.

"Berserker this Cobra, heads up we're moving through the town now." Kousuke radioed.

"Roger that Cobra, be heads up we've glasses PCs in the town. We'll take a shot or two if we can; lotta buildings though." Captain Galveston reported.

"Thanks for the heads up...Gunner, watch the offramps for enemy PCs!" Cobra 2 Actual ordered. The young Marine nodded enthusiastically and rotated the turret and Bushmaster to the right.

"Moving."  With the ambush suppressed for now, the Rosenthal vehicles began moving along the road again, putting more distance between them and the known hostiles.
