The Nordic APCs had skidded down the road, escaping from the RAH-66s that had just been engaging them. Roaring down the road, Tikka's CVC headset was suddenly filled with the chatter of the Osean Army and Contractor armor being engaged.

"Pantari 1-1 is coming up on your six, will engage!" he called over. "Driver, floor it!"

The Stingrays surged forward, and Tikka could soon see the explosions of the Strykers' return fire.

"1-4, hang back, engage any armor, 1-2, engage the buildings beyond the ones that Greyhound hit!"

The gunner swung the 12.7mm M2 Browning onto target, Tikka sighted one of the structures."Gunner, target, yellow building, 521 meters, clear to fire!" The Browning roared, as the gunner squeezed off his first burst. It felt good to finally be engaging a target instead of dodging incoming fire thought Tikka. 1-2 had swung wide and had begun to lay into the building next to the one Tikka was laying into. The 12.7mm rounds tore into the flimsy structure, cracking part of the concrete and ripping apart drywall as the minigun chewed up the smaller neighboring house.

    Berserker 1-1
    November 20, 2045 (Local Time: 1331)
    Southeast of Valstriff

    "Seem em yet, 1-3?"

"Negative sir...lots of smoke but no wheelies."

"Roger that, watch fire near the highway if you spot em."

Galveston followed the M7's gun as it traversed right with his commander's independent viewer, towards the highway. His platoon had moved forward once their allies had pushed past the initial ambush, which was now pretty much suppressed, and were now braving the various shooters and the like harassing them as they ran through town. The line of refugees fleeing had sped up as police tried to get them out fast.

"Gunner identify, PC at our one! Range...3300 Meters!" A voice called forward and below him. Galveston followed it and watched as a pair of M-89s were maneuvering to ambush the retreating forces.

    "HEAT loaded?" He asked.

"HEAT up, sir!" His loader called.

    "Fire!" The Captain ordered.

"On the waaay!" His gunner sang.

The 120mm gun rocked and propelled the round downrange at the lead Sabre. The tank commander watched with deep satisfaction as the gunner's round went on target. The Kaos systems couldn't destroy unguided weapons and the shot, catching the Eruseans by surprise, managed to just barely escape the laser atop its turret. The second machine deployed smoke and withdrew behind cover before another tank could catch it.

"Berseker 1 Actual to all Beserker 1 victors; engage at will. Clear shots only." He said.

    Central Nordlands

In the meantime other M-89s were crawling about, looking for a chance to strike. Three sprung an ambush, two of which appeared in Cobra's field of view as it closed on an onramp. A third crept in place while the convoy zoomed by and when they'd passed, accelerated up and engaged the contractors and Nords from behind as its two friends looked to halt the Marines with their cannons. The Crusader MBTs were out of position to help, unless they wanted to topple a building to get a better shot. Instead the Marine "treadheads" lit up the buildings to their front as ATGM teams started setting up to return fire.

Galveston saw another M-89 appear and engaged it with his CROWS-mounted M312, aiming to hit the laser atop it. The turret rotated and leveled the M256A2 at the machine. After a five second burst, The gunner called "On the way" and sent another HEAT round down range. The Captain had aimed his fire well; score two for the day.

"Tanks to the rear!" yelled Pantari 1-4s commander. The ATGM track had hung back just down the road as the other APCs went hot on the Erusean infantry. The gunner lined up the first M-89, and the wire guided missile punched from the tube and went straight for the engine of the fierce Erusean MBT.

"Driver, reverse, called Tikka, "Gunner, engage external sensors on that tank!" The 12.7mm CROWS system barked to life once more as rounds pinged off the dense turret armor of the M-89, some striking around and on the sensors mounted around the turret. 1-2 had also laid into the M-89, skittering around behind it hoping o put some rounds, any rounds into the engine deck.

"Gunner, engage those PCs." Kousuke said calmly.

Miller turned the turret as Gabriel slowed just enough to allow him a good shot. The Lieutenant watched as tracers flew towards the M-89's turret and top of its body. He sicked his two remaining M122s on the other. Lewis and Perez swung left of him and engaged the other M-89 as tracers flew back and forth. Kousuke could hear the cannon rounds whipping by.

"Got one enemy PC to our rear." Perez intoned. Kousuke glanced at the BFT.

"Pantari's got em." He said, noting one of their ATGM vehicles was lagging.

The Stingrays didn't come to a full stop as they passed the M-89s. The errant shots from houses kept them on their toes. The whole town really was a shooting gallery. Kousuke would be happy when they were in the safe clutches of their own lines. He and his fellow Marines passed the M-89s after giving them a nice dose of 25mm (by which point they were starting to run low on shots) and made a swift retreat to the Southern edge of town.

    Valstriff Proper
    November 20, 2045 (Local Time: 1335)
    Central Nordlands

The M-89 closest to Cobra, the one 2-1 had fired on, stopped shooting after a few rounds when 2-1's shells hit it. The machine wheeled back and down the ramp before stopping as several shells inside its turret were ignited. The driver's hatch popped open as the Erusean soldier hurried out and rolled off the front slope onto the pavement. Inside, the commander and gunner were saved from their already bad burns as the automatic extinguishing systems leapt into action. The gunner dropped back into the troop compartment, screaming for the driver to get around to the back and open the troop doors.

In the meantime, Lewis and Perez's target didn't last as long as its partner. Put under fire by two Bushmasters rather than one, the machine died shooting, unable to defeat such cannon shells with their equipment. The vehicle stayed in place as it died, jagged holes in its hull and turret. One of the Kaos system orbs had been punctured and the APS laser atop it was no more. The M-89's crew surviving crewmenber, the vehicle commander, dropped down and crawled towards the troop doors in the back as he heard the UN vehicles roll by.

As soon as they MG rounds started impacting and denting the M-89 that'd brought up the rear, it wheeled back out of the line of fire towards a position where it could shoot at them while they passed by and generally stay out of sight. The machine's systems went off as it then detected a missile inbound, the APS laser rotating to meet the threat. At the close range, it had little time to do much. As the laser met the TOW with a beam of blue light, it only killed the missile soon enough to avoid a direct hit. Instead, much like an artillery burst would, several sizable chunks of shrepnel lodged themselves into the machine, one into the APS and one into the gunner's sights. Badly wounded, the Sabre rolled further out of sight.

Erusean infantry kept down as the wheeled machines started exiting the town, more concerned about the platoon of tanks that'd rather suddenly appeared to the south. At the town's police station, the Erusean company's commander was on the horn, asking about support. He was told he would get it in a two-fold manner: more F-16XAs were inbound (ten minutes out to be exact), and four HTH helicopters filled with Naval Infantry were going to land north of the town and filter south to help. The big transports swept in low, almost low enough to roll along the highway, and headed for the places Greyhound had occupied to assault the ambush.

The first two hit the snow, kicking up a flurry of powder, and disgorged their troops left of the highway. The other two did the same to its right. As they moved out, the HTHs became evac choppers as the Erusean paras that'd failed to slow the UN forces at the north end found a way to get their injured comrades out of harm's way.

Kousuke let out a breath of relief as he exited the town with his two remaining Stingrays in tow. They'd even gotten a few kills while rolling through the town.

"Cobra 2 Victors, report." He sighed.

"Cobra 2-3 is up twenty and up." Lewis replied.

"Cobra 2-4 is up twenty and up." Perez assured. He started turning his vehicles turret as they left town and got a better angle on the forces in a shooting match with Berserker.

"Berserker this is Cobra 2-4, we are able to put some rounds into those buildings! Mark targets for us!" He called.

"Crawfish, got any rounds left?" 4th Squad's commander asked.

"I've got...70! Berserker, Cobra 2-3 also has rounds ready!" Lewis radioed.

They watched as an AMP round went into a hotel, causing a cloud of dust and derbies to flow outwards.

"Negative negative, keep moving. We'll cover you. Berserker will retreat following your passing." Galveston assured, stressing the latter half of the sentence. He didn't want his tanks hanging around near this much Erusean firepower.

    Valstriff Police Station
    November 20, 2045 (Local Time: 1336)
    Central Nordlands

The Erusean company commander listened as the eight tanks of Berserker pounded away at his southern positions. A quick check of his Blue Force Tracker revealed that the Erusean Naval Infantrymen were moving through the town to meet up with his own forces a good deal of which had been wounded or killed. It was no surprise considering his lightly armed troops had come upon mechanized forces. The bigger victory was that they were forcing them back, though. The UN wouldn't be able to take this town back for a while, if ever.

His air support was on the way, now five minutes away. If they didn't get a chance to drop ordinance on the fleeing UN vehicles, he'd at least shake them up. The man kept his radio nearby and waited for some kind of word on anything, really. For a company commander he felt very disconnected from the fight when it was really on. He had to trust his platoon and squad leaders.

"Silver 3, Silver 3, this is Silver 3-4...enemy forces are retreating to the south! Orders?" a voice asked over the airwaves. The Captain was quick to answer.

"Understood, do not pursue. I repeat, do not pursue. Dig in and asses 3-4's status, how copy?" He replied.

    "Roger that, sir."

The Captain sighed and pulled off his helmet when the conversation was over. Today was not the best day for the Erusean Airborne.

Josh echoed Kousuke's breath of relief as the 4 Strykers of Greyhound left the town behind.  "Greyhounds, status."

    "2's up, all green."

    "3's up, all green."

"4's clear.  Looks like the tanks have the Eruseans suppressed."

    "Works for me."

    The Woods near Osolesk
    November 22, 2045 (Local Time: 1815)
    Central Nordlands

Lewis set down his binoculars and adjusted the scarf around his neck. It made him think of Lynn, and in the ever-dropping temperatures and increasing bits of snow he wanted to have her warmth next to him. Wishing for it satisfied him, and knowing that he and a bunch of other Marines, especially in his platoon, would have the same. Pictures and bragging had been exchanged on who had the best lover waiting home. In the end, though, no one really won. Lewis felt a wily smile cross his face. He felt a few tinges of lust enter his mind at the thoughts of Lynn.

"Juste attendre ma cherie, votre maître de la romance sera bientôt la maison pour vous charmer à votre plaisir." He whispered to her.

Lewis raised his binoculars again to scan the woods out in front of him. He'd set his M122 up behind a bunch of hay bales to provide some cover. They wouldn't do much if anything to stop a bullet, but he had peace of mind and some form of protection against being spotted first visually. Beyond that was a slope downwards, right into the outskirts of Osolesk. The place had been under Erusean control since before the gaggle of wheeled machine had arrived at this farm to help hold the line. Unlike the frail paratroopers that'd dogged them from their intial defensive position to Valstriff, these soldiers were mechanized infantry. Equipped with heavy weapons, plenty of support and tracked vehicles, they'd be able to give the UN-backed troops a bigger run for their money.

"Halt...come forward and be recognized!" He heard Conman say harshly.

Lewis turned around to see Johann approach and recite the password to avoid being shot. Lewis offered the man a smile and a respectful nod. The man looked up, showing off his new left eye, which was know a cybernetic. The device had quickly given birth to the nickname "Sergeanator", which Johann was still working to embrace. He was openly unhappy about the eye, but even unhappier about the alternative of leaving for Osea like Wood had been.

"What news from the front, Crawfish?" The man asked.

"Nothin sur, just a whole lotta nothin. Haven't been shelled in oh...bout six hours." Lewis replied.

"Yeah Perez had about the same to say...okay Crawfish I'll talk to yah later; gotta go meet the Luitenant." Johann replied. The man pulled his M41 and walked off towards a barn where 2-1 Actual's vehicle was.

Inside the little hovel, Kousuke shivered while he stared down at his digital map of the area. It was the time between the Stingray's cranking ups. Under his makeshift tent, made by a small tarp, he'd taken off his boots to avoid getting snow and mud in the sleeping bag. His "tent" was really a horse stable that smelled but kept him from freezing. The inside of the Stingray was just too uncomfortable after a while. Gabriel could sleep in the thing like it was a Sleep Number, but Kousuke could only do it when the situation warranted it.

His eyes were focused on the local to their northeast. The city of Osolesk was one of the major industrial centers in Nordlands and, in olden times, one of four cities that guarded the approaches to the capital of Virkin. The Erusean 55th Combined Arms Division, the "Princess Selvaria" division, was the unit that had its hand in the place. The city wasn't the best place for big tanks and IFVs, but there were no plans to send in Cobra, Greyhound, or any of them. Not on vehicles, anyways. The higher ups wanted what was called a "prisoner grab". In order to exact more intel, stuff you could only get from rooting around in someone's noggin, you grabbed a few important-looking bastards and whatnot and ran back home with them. He was currently trying to figure out all their available approaches before he gave a brief proper. He heard his RTO challenge someone, and then looked up as Johann approached.

"Evenin, Luietenant." He said as they exchanged salutes.

"Grab a seat, Sarge; we're about to get started." Kousuke said. He keyed his radio.

"Pantari, Greyhound, Komodo and Chipmunk Actuals on me. Got something new for us to do." He radioed.

Hobbs walked past Greyhound's lead vehicle with the rest of Komodo 1 in tow, clapping Josh on the shoulder with a meaty frying pan-sized hand.  "Finally, we get to do something fun, huh?"

Staggering slightly and trying to conceal the pain of being essentially hit in the shoulder by a brick wall, Josh said, "Excited, huh?"

Hobbs smirked.  "I eat this shit with a spoon."

Josh rolled his eyes.  "Good old CRT mentality."

"That's why they pay us the big bucks, squirt."

Josh chuckled, still getting familiar with the full steam ahead attitude of Rosenthal's CRT operators, who mostly came from Osean and other international Tier 1 units.

The two walked up to the Marines' position.  Hobbs said, "So, time for a grab, eh?"

"Well that's two...anyways take a seat gents and to answer your question we are attempting a prisoner grab." Kousuke nodded. He brought out his map.

"We're sending in three eight-man fireteams to raid Erusean positions and possibly capture a few people. We'll be getting artillery support, but for now CAS is out. They're busy slowing Erusean advances to the north trying to break our left flank. The plan is to enter the town via the woods to its southwest after arty rattles the Eruseans in the town with some rounds. Our objectives will be capturing company commanders and up."

Kousuke handed over a printout of Erusean officer ranks while he switched the image on the tablet's screen to that of a few armored vehicles.

"The place is held by elements of the 55th Combined Arms Division. We can expect them to have Cavalier IFVs, heavy emplacements and likely tanks outside the city." He went on. The Lieutenant looked up.

"So pack for heavy forces...any questions so far?" He asked.

Hobbs shook his head, his massive forearms crossed over his chest.  HVT grabs were his bread and butter, but he wanted to see how the young Marine lieutenant handled things.  Meanwhile, Aztec and the members of Druid looked at the topographical maps on their tablets, figuring out sightlines and support by fire positions.  Scarecrow's leg was still bothering him, so Druid wouldn't be able to move as far or as fast as the rest.  It was just as well, since they had the bigger guns and thus the longer engagement range.

Ever the pyromaniac, Sandy was looking at force strengths, calculating how many LAWs he would need to bring with him.

"Good...now the plan is to entire just after the arty lands. We'll be pressing in through this industrial park that's backed right up to the woods." Kousuke outlined, tracing a finger along the route.

He then went through several recon photos of the place. Most of the M-85s were outside the town, placed in several platoon-strength defensive rings facing towards the front line. two were on a hill, providing security for a battery of M-97 howitzers. Cavalier IFVs were at a few roadblocks and highway onramps, but overall most of the armor, save for support trucks and BOV-3s. Kousuke could be sure that a bunch of other kinds of vehicles were spread along the lines, but if they weren't near enough to make a difference, he didn't care.

"We'll wanna get in and out fast, so don't be trying to stir up more trouble than you can stomach. Who knows how much they'll bring in to squash us." Kousuke added.

Reaver glanced over the information presented to him and in turn his team did the same. The former SAS operator began to assess the area and spoke up.

"Longer sight lines will be covered by Frank and I; Frank. I suggest you pack your N-LAW for this. Those Cavaliers could be turned against us if it gets too noisy."

Frank nodded in agreement, "Wise idea. Don't want to be caught with our junk in the wind if it goes south."

"As the Leftenant said, don't stir up excess trouble. We'll provide overwatch and setup a crossfire with the other teams and the Leftenant's Marines if required. Lucia and Dutch, you'll lead the assault into the structures for the grab. Breaker and Fuchs will have the rear and watch your six."

"Si Senor Reaver." Lucia nodded as she poured over the visual intelligence on her tablet and in paper form. Lucia exhaled as she looked up from her display while her older comrade in arms Breaker acknowledged Reaver.

"So, watching Lulu's back. That's something I don't mind at all." Fuchs thought out loud.

"I wouldn't take that thought out of a professional context." Dutch replied.

Lucia simply stuck her tongue out at Karl's comment.

Tikka glanced over the topographical map, scribbling several notes on a small water proof pad. Noting the positions of enemy forces and the terrain, he selected several of his tougher dismounts, Geting, Bålgeting, Vildkatt, Lunni, Jaktfalk, Sverdfisk and Orm to accompany him.

Turning to Yak, he asked him if the Oseans had any idea what aircraft or helicopters the Eruseans would have on hand. As Yak began his translating, he turned to give his team orders.

"Vildkatt, Lunni, bring MBT-LAWs, the rest of you, grab as much ammo and SLAMs as you can carry. Jaktfalk, you and Orm will set up in this building," he said, jabbing his finger at what appeared to be a two story red brick house typical of most Nordic homes. "If things go sideways, we will rendezvous at the back of the industrial site. Now go, get ready."

The weeks of harsh fighting had stripped Tikka of his will to yell orders at his men outside of combat. Turning back to Yak, he waited for his answer.

Yak translated Kousuke's words as fast as he could, but it was obvious the young Nord was wearing himself out. He was neither cut out nor prepared to fight a war, especially one this intense. He did assure the Nordic CO that he'd be on the radio in case Tikka or any of his men needed help with the language barrier. As an additional reference Johann would be the top Devil Dog around the M122s for now. Kousuke checked his watch; the artillery was due to drop soon and they likely wanted to get moving.

"Any other questions? No? Then let's do this." He asked as he put on his helmet.

Having received his answer, he thanked the worn out police officer and said that he had no further questions. Saluting the Marine commander, he yanked on his helmet and picked up his Ak 7, which had been sitting on an ammo crate. Making sure it was safe, he checked the load and loaded a thermobaric grenade into the underbarrel 40mm grenade launcher. Walking back to his men, Tikka took a detour past the maintenance shop, he was pleased to see Huginn and Muninn being refitted with new 25mm gun turrets. Looking to upgrade the Stingray's firepowr, the turrets had shown up two days before the war started. Only now had they begun to filter to the front. Arriving at the sparse camp, his men had finished loading their gear and had strapped their helmets on.

"Right, let's sync up with the others." Activating their HUDs, the team members first synced their comms and maps. Tikka then checked that tey were showing on their new Blue Force tracker tablets. He had scammed it off of a Marine supply sergeant who found himself with an extra. Having a bottle of vodka on hand helped. All preps complete, they returned to the staging grounds.

    The Woods Near Osolesk
    November 22, 2045 (Local Time: 1920)
    Central Nordlands

"Fang 4, this is Fang 7...I've got eight footmobiles patrolling the railyar-wait...we've got a second IFV rolling into position."

"Rog'r that, Conman...track the new IFV. Fang Actual, do yuh copy all that?"

Kousuke watched the Mini-UAV feed as the small quadrotor kept its camera on the two Erusean Infantry Fighting Vehicles near the entrance to the train yard. He checked his watch again; the arty was due to drop in five minutes. He peeked around the high wall he and his four-man fireteam were behind.

    "Actual copies all." He whispered.

In the meantime Lewis had his team deployed among the cars closest to the outer fence. Lewis himself was deployed behind a mound of dirt that'd been in the process of being loaded into a open-topped transport car. He'd deployed Conman all the way back at the top of the hill to provide overwatch. The man checked his BFT one last time before peering through his M41's night scope at the two Erusean soldiers across the way, near some flatbed cars while their colleagues checked the objects. One turned his head and seemed to talk with one searching under a car. After a minute a third, some kind of RTO appeared. The man who'd talked with the guy under the car said something, and then the RTO-type nodded. Lewis watched the guy go, and then looked back at the patrol; they were moving on.

Even though his Lieutenant had promised they'd have a portable jammer up as soon as they were down here, but he couldn't help but wonder if the Eruseans had something to counter that. Conman came back on the radio.

"Enemy is deploying UAVs..." He reported.

Lewis looked up, switched his monocle to IR and looked up. Sure enough he saw an outline against the sky.

"Fang Actual, be heads up for enemy UAV." He radioed.

    "Roger, lowering ours." Kousuke assured.

"All Victors be heads up, enemy combatants are employing UAVs. Do not engage until the arty drops." The Lieutenant advised.
