    The South Pacific

Captain Hal Kirkland watched as the Ticonderoga-class cruiser's bow dipped a little in the rough seas. The 5-inch gun on the bow was splashed by the very tops of the waves that slid up the cruiser's bow. Sea spray washed up against the windscreen in front of the men on the bridge. It was a scene very evocative of a romantic portrayal of sailors, but Captain Kirkland and his crew weren't here to look nice and wax poetic. The Captain lowered his binoculars and looked back into the space.

"What's the status of Hornet 13's relief?" He called.

"Word is that they'll have her fueled and flying in about ten minutes, sir!" A sailor replied from behind.

    "And Hornet 14?" He asked.

"Pilot says she'll have just enough fuel to make it back safely, at this rate we'll have Hornet 13 aloft in time to prevent that." The same voice reported.

Kirkland gave an acknowledging grunt and nod before raising his binoculars and looking out into the sea. Visibility was good, at least good enough to have Mk. 1 Mod 0 Eyeballs on hand as an effective way of spotting things. The clouds were well above them, and not solid at that. They overlapping nets of sonars and radars only further enhanced their situational awareness. Captain Kirkland felt in command of the situation. He quietly dared the Verusean ships to the south to try and challenge him.

Eric felt wholly at home. This was his domain, his element, and his second home. Out before him the cloud-marked sky moved by slowly. He watched as Mark passed off to his left down the cold leg. He smiled and turned soon after. Down below the ships of the fleet pushed south, carefully moving towards the southeast to turn around the north again.

That meant the patrol station constantly had to shift to stay in tune with the fleet. Eric looked at the fuel gauge again. It'd be about another four hours before they had to hit the tanker. Until then the radio waves stayed silent. Eric kept his attention divided between the radar, navigating, his fuel, and Misaki's picture.

    March 29, 2025 (Local Time: 1406)
    The Verusean destroyer Istrazivac
    Southern Pacific

The Verusean Naval Captain was doing much the same thing Captain Kirkland was: watching the sea and commanding his ship. His Luyang III-class destroyer was flanked by a pair of Jiangkai frigates. The three ships were at the head of a small force of surface vessels moving north to distract the Osean fleet from interdicting their (Verusea's) runs into Tara to get supplies to their covert operations in the nation. Behind him, young and bright-faced sailors sat hunched over their consoles, watching the events occurring above, on, and below the sea. They also had a shore based AWACS to help counter the more integrated system the Oseans had. They also had J-10 fighters on standby to launch. For now, though, the skies remained clear of any Verusean combat aircraft.

Already the sailors aboard the three ships understood they had a long list of disadvantages. The three ships had another Luyang and two Jiangkais nearby and a pair of Yuan-class attack submarines were hanging out under the waves, moving with the behavior of lazy whales. The subs were their greatest surprise weapon for now; they'd seen no sign of the carrier group's anti-submarine assets at serious work. Even then the subs were playing it very cautiously. the Istrazivac's main concerns were enemy surface ships and aircraft. The captain believed the latter was a bigger threat, so he'd had a quarter of his Vertical Launch System (VLS) cells loaded with HHQ-9 SAMs and a quarter loaded with HQ-16s. The rest were loaded with CY-5 anti-submarine weapons or YJ-83 anti-ship missiles (ASM).

"Sir, we have a surface contact...one ship at Heading 005, 640 Kilometers away. Probably an Osean Ticonderoga-class crusier." A voice called from behind. The man turned towards his subordinates, and then walked to a map of the region.

"Mark it on the charts and make sure we're transmitting a clear signal so they'll pay attention to us." He nodded. With luck, the Oseans would be more concerned about the single ship they could see, rather than the ones they couldn't.

    OFS Valiant (CG-103)
    The South Pacific

"Sir, we've got three contacts! Combat-ship signatures at 190, 400 Miles out!" a radar operator reported.

Kirkland looked back, then turned around and walked to the center where their main chart was. The contacts were being marked down on it and chalked up on the threat board. Kirkland eyed the range between the two: 398 miles. His own RGM-84L Harpoons could only reach out 150 miles. For now he couldn't engage them anyway with all of the ships hanging out outside the exclusion zone. Until then all he could do was make the others aware of the situation. He turned towards a group of radar monitors and communications personnel.

"What's the status of Hornets 13 and 14?" He asked.

"Hornet 14 is about to take off, sir!" one replied.

Outside the ship, on the back of the Ticoderoga-class ship, the relief MH-60R was being cleared for flight. Yellow-vested flight personnel stayed down while the rotor blades cut through the air at an ever-increasing pace. The machine was going up with a single Mk.54 torpedo and four AGM-114R Hellfire II missiles. In the distance, some of the sailors could see Hornet 13 returning to be refueled. The Seahawk lifted off and turned to starboard before clearing the deck.

"Hornet 14 is away, Hornet 14 is away!" a voice called over the ship's 1MC loudspeakers.

Vixen wasn't able to be bored on these BARCAPs anymore. They were so normal to her she was able to do other things, think about other things while she flew her F-21 in circles for a few hours. Ryu, on the other hand, was a little strained from it. He had, however, learned that you did things like sneak your MP3 player on or other simple tasks that entertained you but didn't distract you. A few times in communications she'd heard music in the background. The subject on her mind was the detachment's future.

At this point, she was wondering if maybe they should be pulled back to the carrier. Besides the fact that most of the UN Wing had been scattered, she felt safer on the boat. No doubt the Wellingtion battlegroup would be hit, but as a NAVAIR pilor she felt safer among her kind and working with several missile-armed defenders in the form of crusiers and destroyers. She'd run it by CAG and seee what he thought. The radio crackled briefly as it came to life.

    Redeye
<<Shogun Lead, Shogun Lead, this is Redeye. We've got multiple bogeys...Heading 213, 470 Miles, Angels 24...looks like a pair of Cupboards>>

Vixen looked down at her radar, which didn't reach nearly as far as the E-2's, and nodded.

    Vixen
<<Roger that Redeye, Shogun 1-1 and 1-2 will intercept. Three, Four?>>

    Saber
    <<Three>>

    Tex
    <<Four>>

    Vixen
<<Move your CAP halfway between us...be ready to come running if they've got some Finbacks or something trailing the Cupboards>>

    Saber
    <<Roger that Lead...Tex, back on me>>

With a quick confirmation, Mark broke from his pattern and eased down behind and slightly below his lead. They moved northwest towards a patch of sky between what'd once been their two CAP Stations while Ryu and Vixen formed up and started heading towards the two ELINT planes. On Vixen's orders, Ryu went three miles abeam to the left. The two jets maneuvered to bracket the Cupboards when they intercepted them.

    March 29, 2025 (Local Time: 1412)
    Aboard the Verusean KJ-3000
    Over the Coast of Verusa

The controllers aboard the AWACS watched as the two Y-9s were being approached by Osean fighters. There was a general air of confidence that the Oseans would not fire on the propeller-driven aircraft unless they had sufficient reason to. There was, however, the fog of war. It was that uncertainty that had four J-15s rolling out to get airborne in pairs. A third pair was already airborne and moving towards the Mainring to take over for the two J-11s that'd been covering it until they needed to return to base. The AWACS pushed further inland to stay out of reach of the F-21s.

    Cunami 1-1
    <<Tidal, this is Cunami 1-1, we're airborne; requesting instructions>>

One of the controllers looked at her display and then the senior officer in the aircraft. The Colonel walked over and observed the picture himself. He pointed towards the sky between the coast and the surface combatants facing down Osea's carrier battlegroup.

"There...we'll need them to cover our ships." He ordered. The junior airman nodded and adjusted her boom mike.

    Tidal
<<Cunami 1-1 this is Tidal, proceed to Section 4-C and establish patrol...Cunami 1-3 and 1-4, take up patrol station 50 Kilos behind Ajkula 7 and 8>>

    Cunami 1-1
    <<1-1 copies all, Tidal>>

    Cunami 1-3
    <<1-3 copies all>>

The controllers watched as the Sea Flankers changed their courses steadily, pushing out over the water. There was something fascinating to all of them, watching the long-nosed fighter-interceptors at work under their command. Symbols, friendly and unfriendly, squared off and moved against each other like some complex chess game. The Mainring could see almost everything in the area, and what they couldn't see they knew was still there...

    March 29, 2025 (Local Time: 1415)
    Verusean Smuggler Boat
30 Miles off the Yuktobanian Coast

Corvette Captain Pavle Zevic held onto the railing on the smuggling boat's bridge as it plowed through the waves around the coast of Yuktobania. The vessel's motor, something made to move racing boats at top speed, roared at a healthy and steady pace. Only the higher waves buffered it. Most of the crew was belowdecks or inside the enclosed bridge of the ship. For now they were nothing more than civilian seafarers enjoying the waves and skirting the standoff happening a good number of miles to the east. But if they were found, they'd have to change to a fast attack boat armed with heavy machine guns and a small stock of SA-23 shoulder-launched missiles.

The use of force was the last outcome the Captain desired, though. The first priority was getting the load of M70 rifles and ammunition to a commando unit inside Tara. They would move under the cover provided by their own ships, who'd drawn away Osea's massive naval might. Once to a pre-briefed point along the coast, they'd be met by plainclothes Special Purpose Forces soldiers and would trade the weapons for written copies of their recon efforts to be smuggled back to Verusa. It was a primitive system of passing along info, but alongside other similar methods it was almost invisible. They just had to avoid getting caught...

    March 29, 2025 (Local Time: 1415)
    Shogun Flight
    Over the South Pacific

Mark made a hard and fast split from Eric as they hit the area where Vixen had commanded to go. He grunted against the Gs and slowed his Thunderhawk to make a 180. He over-calculated and ended up making a wider turn than he wanted, leaving Eric the only one pulling a racetrack pattern for a few seconds. He back around, staying under Eric and sliding into his traffic pattern. Eric noted the whole process with muted enjoyment.

    Saber
    <<Still with me, 1-4?>>

    Tex
    <<Yeah, yeah 4 is still with y'all, 3>>

Any quips were cut short by a change in Mark's RWR, which also cut off further embarassment from stumbling over his words. He looked down at his radar screen and saw that the Y-9s had come into radar range. He leaned to his right, towards the coast, and peered out into the distance. In his own Thunderhawk, Eric watched as Vixen and Ryu started closing their pincer on the two ELINT aircraft. The J-11s that'd off-and-on transmitted seemed to have gone completely silent...no, there they were. Heading back towards the safety of their home. He looked over to the left, where somewhere out in the cloudy murk were the three Verusean surface ships. The westernmost ship was occasionally pinging him with its radar, but all Eric could do was wait. He had no ASMs hanging from his pylons today, just Sidewinders.

    Vixen
    <<Redeye, Shogun 1-1 and 1-2 have intercepted snoopers>>

    Redeye
<<Roger Shogun, turn bogeys south. Escort to Delta 3-C>>

While she achknwoledged, Ryu eased into position at the two Veruseans' two o' clock high. Vixen handled the translation while he recorded the event.

"VF-138 Red Ronin, 29 March 2025...Time is 1419. Shoguns 202 and 211 have intercepted two Y-9 Cupboards south of OFS James Wellington's exclusion zone. I'm currently covering them from two high while 202 is on their nine to mae contact." He spoke up, addressing the audio recorder. Vixen started talking soon after.

    Vixen
<<Pazna Verusean aviona, vi se priblizava Osean Navi iskljucenja zonu. Pratite nas na pratnju daleko od zone iskljucenja. Nepridrzavanje ce rezultirati u upotrebi sile>>

"You're approaching an Osean Navy exclusion zone. Get out or we'll shoot you"...Yeah, Ryu thought, that was about the gost of it. He mentally reminded hismelf where the Master Arm was in case he needed to turn into these guys and attack. He looked down and saw a camera lense pointed up at his jet. Ryu wished he had some paper to write "Tits or GTFO" on. The pilot smirked at his own joke while his flight lead contiued to call out to the Cupboards.

    March 29, 2025 (Local Time: 1421)
    AWACS Redeye
    Over the OFS James Wellington

The controller aboard the E-2D Hawkeye watched as the picture updated with each turn of the APY-9 radar atop the plane. So far the only action was down south, where he'd sent a pair of F-21s to intercept two Vrusean ELINTs rolling north, probably to test the fleet's resolve. He watched as very slowly the two Y-9s were wrangled in. His eyes moved to the other quadrants, checking the picture for anything else. Typical of the Veruseans to hit from multiple angles to test them...there was something! He saw it briefly, but after another sweep he noted a small contact near the coast. Able to guess what it was, given the brief earlier that day, he scoped the nearest friendly and then keyed his mike.

    Redeye
<<Hornet 06, this is Redeye. We've got a surface contact at Heading 207, 60 Miles, looks like a small boat. Your signal is Buster>>

    March 29, 2025 (Local Time: 1422)
    Hornet 06
    Over the South Pacific

    Hornet 06
<<Roger that Redeye, Hornet 09's signal is Buster>>

Hornet 06's pilot, Lieutenant "MGK" Kelly, gently tilted his MH-60S Seahawk to head north towards the high-speed contact racing up the coast.  He looked down at his displays and changed one to the FLIR pod. An excited buzz went through him even if the picture was clear. Somewhere out there was a go. He looked over at his co=pilot, another Lieutenant with the callsign "McLovin".

"McLovin, what's the nearest ship we can get a boarding party from?" He asked. The man checked maps and their GPS.

"OFS Liberty...want me to contact em?" He replied. McLovin nodded.

In the meantime he pushed the MH-60 as fast as he could with the fuel he had left. It was likely they'd have to refuel from the Arleigh Burke his co-pilot was calling before they returned to the Wellington. MGK called back to his crew chief and told him to ready the GAU-21 machine gun mounted on the side door. They'd want it ready to brandish and fire warning shots when they came upon the boat. He wanted to get a good look at it first via the FLIR before they came to close and possibly got sucker punched. if they had to stay far, they had four AGM-114 Hellfires to use on the small boat...if permission was given to shoot.

MGK and by extension none of his crew had ever fired a shot in anger. No one in the squadron had; it'd always been exercises, picking up some airdale who bailed from his plane, or ferrying around bigwigs to the different ships in the group. MGK had joined the Navy as a helo pilot because he thought it'd be dangerous. Dropping in SEALs, flying in rough weather, daring rescues and stopping smugglers. Well...he got the rough weather part as he watched tint rivulets of rain inch down the corners of his windscreen.

    OFS Liberty
<<Hornet 06 this is OFS Liberty, we're prepping a VBSS team now. We've been authorized to change course to assist in intercept>>

    Hornet 06
<<Roger Liberty...do you have the contact on scope?>>

    OFS Liberty
<<That's affirm, got one surface contact at 207, 160 Miles out...guys looks to be doing about 50 knots>>

"Someone's thrill seekin." McLovin chuckled. MGK nodded and smiled in agreement before he got on the radio again.

    Hornet 06
<<Roger that Liberty; we should be able to catch him>>

    March 29, 2025 (Local Time: 1417)
    Aboard the lead Y-9
    Over the South Pacific

The co-pilot lowered his camera and checked a few photos he'd nabbed of the F-21 off to their right while the pilot and communications officer dealt with the other F-21. The pilot, a Corvette Captain and veteran of many interceptions by foreign jets, was surprised the Oseans were threatening to use force already. Normally he could probably make it inside the perimeter of the fleet before he was forced away. He heard the commo officer, a little shaken from the mention of force, reply to the escorting F-21s.

    Ajkula 1
<<Da...da razumemo. Ce se pretvoriti u tarifni broj 207>>

At that, the pilot slowly turned the plane to the left. His wingman stayed close, not too enthusiastic about the thought of being shot down. Neither of the Y-9s stood a chance of defeating the F-21s, and when at the ready the firepower the Osean Navy could bring to bear would overwhelm two lumbering spy planes. He had the co-pilot check the radar; he needed to knwo where their own fighters were.

"Nearest pair is over the coast right now...should I call them?" the man asked. The pilot shook his head.

"No, we'll go to them. The Oseans won't shoot, but they will follow awhile."

    March 29, 2025 (Local Time: 1422)
    Cunami 1-1
    Over the Coast of Verusa

The pilot of Cunami 1-1 watched the nose of her fighter cross the coast.

    Cunami 1-1
    <<Tidal this is Cunami 1-1, we're feet wet>>

    Tidal
<<Roger that Cunami...we need you to press north to meet Ajkula and deter their escorts...aircraft appear to be two F-21s>>

    Cunami 1-1
    <<Understood Tidal, Cunami 1 is moving north>>

Cunami 1-1 hailed her wingman and Cunami 1-3 and 1-4 and spread the four jets out in a wall formation that spanned 20 miles while the other two went to occupy the CAP station. She took up the far left so she would be going head on with the Osean Navy fighters.

    Vixen
<<Redeye this is Shogun 1-1, bogeys have turned around. We will escort them clear of the exclusion zone>>

    Redeye
    <<Roger Shogun>>

"Okay, so we're turning them around now...we're about 40 miles from the exclusion zone." Ryu narrated.

The kept his F-21 at their high two while the mixed formation turned left. The ungainly looking Y-9 turned much more slowly, pushing him to drive the throttles back even more to avoid slamming his more nimble jet into the Y-9. His vision became focused on the turn until the were pointed south. After that he watched Vixen give the two planes a wider berth.

    Vixen
    <<Shogun 1-2, take up a trail position>>

    Jukebox
    <<Roger that Lead>>

As Ryu snapped right and circled around to get behind the two jets, Eric and Mark carefully moved their own CAP further south to stay close enough to their lead pair. Eric checked his fuel gauge again. Still plenty of fuel left unless they had to come running to Vixen and Ryu's aid.

    Redeye
<<Shogun 1 be advised, we've got more bogeys crossing the coast and fanning out...looks to be about four so far. Heading 190, Angels 20, 156 Miles...>>

    Saber
    <<Shogun 1-4, form back on me...AWACS this is Shogun 1-3, nearest bogeys?>>

    Redeye
<<Shogun 1-3, nearest bogey is at Heading 187, Angels 20, 153 Miles...cleared to intercept if they turn towards Shoguns 1-1 and 1-2>>

Not the bet situation but he'd roll with it. Eric looked back as Mark slid into position behind and right.

    Saber
    <<Roger that Redeye>>

Eric looked over and signaled Mark to return to the CAP pattern, albeit pointed at the Flankers. Mark again split off and eased back into taking the other leg while Eric kept straight as a reference point. As he saw Mark diving into the straight and level, he turned left, pointing his nose away as Mark acme around to "hot nose" the Veruseans hanging just outside of radar range.

    March 29, 2025 (Local Time: 1424)
    OFS Valiant (CG-109)
    The South Pacific

The sonar operator manning her station was growing tired from the lack of action. She'd been sitting at this console for close to eight hours and the final few minutes for her relief to arrive seemed to be dragging along a year at a time. She had six minutes left when she spotted the contact. Their Seahawk had been "dipping" to look for potential sonar contacts and the ship got datalinked the picture to augment her own sonar searches. There was a contact at the very tip of their coverage net, faint but certainly not to be ignored. She touched her boom mike to make sure it was still there before she spoke.

"Sonar contact at 180, 120 Miles! Single bogey...might've been a periscope." She called.

Captain Kirkland looked back, then forward, due south. Hornet 14 was ordered the contact's way. Kirkland had faced submarines before when he was a Surface Warfare Officer aboard an Arleigh Burke. Duels with the ships were games of patience and vigilance, but if they'd detected them this far out. He looked back and cleared his throat.

"Raise the Wellington and see if they can deploy an Bullsharks to assist us!" He called.

    Cunami 1-1
    Over the South Pacific

The Verusean pilot spotted four shapes on the horizon at her Ten O' Clock. She squinted and spotted the two Y-9s after a minute, shepherded closely by two fighters. She assumed those were the Osean fighters trying to shoo the propeller-driven planes from the expanse of sea they'd claimed as theirs.

    Cunami 1-1
<<Tidal, this is Cunami 1-1, we have visual on Akjkula. Instructions?>>

Inside the Mainring, the local commander appraised the situation. There were four fighters near his own but only two were in a patrol pattern while the other two were close to the two Cupboards. The thought of stirring up trouble was at the back of his mind. He ordered that the J-15s recieve the incoming Y-9s and ensure the two F-21s turned around.

    Tidal
<<Cunami, ensure Akjkula returns to our airspace safely. Do not allow the Osean aircraft to proceed further south than you>>

Cunami 1-1 acknowledged and switched her attention to her wingman.

    Cunami 1-1
<<1-2 this is 1-1, close up and follow me. We're going to ward off the Oseans. DO NOT fire unless permission is given; just show them we are here and to turn around>>

    Cunami 1-2
    <<Understood 1-1, I'll follow your lead>>

With that Cunami 1-1 eased to the left using her rudders and pointed her Bars radar directly at the incoming fighters to warn them silently. She knew where they were and she was ready to put up a fight. At the same time, her RWR told her their own radars could see her too. The two J-11s settled into the straight and level again in a head-on intercept.

    Cunami 1-1
<<1-3, 1-4, block the other two aircraft. Don't let them head south either>>

    Verusean submarine Sabljarka
    Depth: 900 Feet

    Piiiing...Piiiing...Piiiing...

Captain Sergei Pietre listened to the eereiely soothing sound of sonars searching for them. In his many years as a submariner, both in Yuktobania and Verusa, he'd come to keep a cool head when the sound started. During the war of 2010, it'd been almost constant as even in weakness the Osean Navy had blanketed the seas with sonar buoys. The added benefit of peacetime was that if he lost the game the only casualties would be pride. The Osean Navy always abhorred shooting first. Unless he pushed them hard enough, they'd remained chained.

The Yuan-class submarine was currently playing the peacetime game. It would distract and scout the Osean battlegroup's assets until their breathing room became too tight. At this lazy, stealthy rate the Sabljarka would be able to do that for hours. The Oseans seemed to have a suspicion, though. A suspicion that they were down here. The sonar of a surface ship was interuppted every now and again by the sound made when a Anti-Submarine Warfare helicopter "dipped" its own detection device into the water.

    PIIIIIIIIIIIIIING...

Now came the inevitable. Inside Sergei's cool, thoughtful persona he admonished himself for trying to bait the Oseans and make them get all worked up for nothing. Poking the periscope out of the water and then darting away had been too cocky a move. He'd avoid that kind of behavior from now on, though.

"Mr. Babic, are the decoys ready?" He asked in a voice just loud enough to be heard. His XO looked back from over by a wall of consoles and displays and nodded.

    "Yes sir." He nodded.

"Very well then, go to full silent...speed 3 Knots on heading 053..." He ordered.

    Verusean Smuggler Boat
40 Miles off the Coast of Yuktobania

"Captain! Visual contact off our port! At least 30 Kilos out!"

Zevic looked to the east and raised his own pair of binoculars to his eyes. In the rainy sky he spotted it quickly, but he couldn't tell what it was at first. The noise of the boat and the waves obscured any sound at first. Then his eyes focused to the long distance. It was a helicopter.

An Osean helicopter, like a variant of their Blackhawk series. Zevic grabbed the handset to the ship's internal radio.

"Incoming helicopter! Poruchuk, is the cargo secured and hidden?" He asked. The response was quick and harried.

    "Aye Captain, cargo is secure!"

Zevic considered using his SA-23s before the helicopter could report them, but quickly dismissed the thought. Instead he decided to play dumb, hide the cargo and hope the Oseans might be bluffed away. The man relaxed his posture as the helicopter came closer and started to turn with them. He examined the side of the machine and saw a large-caliber gun in the open door. Nothing else....maybe they could beat the craft and hurry away before they were intercepted...

    Hornet 06
    Near the Coast of Yuktobania

MGK saw it on the FLIR: one speedboat-type craft moving north. He could see shapes on the deck, humans, moving about quickly. The pilot kept up his gradual turn to the right so the door gun would be able to engage the boat in case it came to that. He eased the MH-60 parallel to the boat and keyed his mike.

"Okay, give em two warnings in Osean, Yuke and Verusan! They don't stop, fire warning shots across the bow!" He called over the intercom.

"Gotcha Skipper!" The Crew Chief replied.

"Want us to ready the Other Fifty?" He added as an afterthought. The "Other Fifty" was shorthand for the M107 they had aboard. It'd be used by a member of OFS Liberty's attached VBSS Team.

"Ready it, but don't employ it unless I say!." MGK replied. He glanced at the boat again as a megaphone in back started shouting out the message in Osean.

"Attention unidentified vessel, this is the Osean Navy. In accordance with NUN Resolutions we are ordering you to stop for a search of your vessel. Slow your boat to a stop and have all personnel on board stand along the port and starboard in the open! Failure to comply will result in use of force!"

It was a fucking mouthful, MGK thought, but it was necessary to stop the boat.

    Hornet 06
<<Liberty, we've intercepted unidentified vessel. What's the ETA on that VBSS Team?>>

    OFS Liberty
    <<ETA is five minutes>>

MGK acknowledged and glanced back at the boat as it kept going. Bastards were probably trying to play innocent...

    March 29, 2025 (Local Time: 1432)
    Shogun Flight
    Over the South Pacific

Vixen squinted and saw the specks moving across the sky her RWR was squawking about. They slowed and then settled into place to her twelve and started to grow. Slowly the sprouted tails and wings and started to become more and more distinct in shape. Vixen looked over at the two Y-9s, then her wingman.

    Vixen
<<Heads up Jukebox; bogeys at our twelve>>

    Jukebox
    <<Rog Lead, I see em>>

    Vixen
<<Redeye, Redeye this is Shogun 1-1; we've got VID on bogeys at our twelve. They're hot-nosing us...orders?>>

    Redeye
<<Shogun, Redeye, break escort from the Cupboards and come back north, how copy?>>

Not the best move to turn tail but Vixen had to roll with it. She gave orderes to her flight: Eric and Mark would point themselves at the bogeys, likely Flankers, while she and Ryu peeled away from the Y-9s one at a time. Ryu would go first. She waited while Eric and Mark got themselves figured out. Mark was quietly getting tired of going in and out of CAP formation. He checked his fuel gauge and maneuvered to form back up on Eric's wing.

This whole situation stunk to him, in fact. The Veruseans were playing them and they all knew it. While the Oseans and other UN people were put in bad positions they shaped the game. At least Admiral Dodge had this exclusion zone. The UN could screw off; the carrier was a huge investment and asset, and guys like him protected it to the end. Mark fumbled around for a lukewarm bottle of Dr. Pepper to his right and glanced at the picture of Kat to his left to calm himself.

    Vixen
    <<Okay 1-2, break now>>

Ryu gave a quick "Rog" and pulled up into a gentle half loop, turning it into an upwards Split-S as he turned to be upright when he hit the top. Vixen stayed on course towards the Verusans before pulling off to the left and diving a little, heading towards Eric and Mark's position.

The SQ-47B "Bullshark" was not bigger than a T-45 Goshawk or A-4 Skyhawk, but it was packed nose-to-tail with sub-hunting gear. Two of the birds were sitting on the wait catapults, being given final inspection by deck crew surrounding them. In the depths of the ship, from secured spaces, their pilots waited for the signal to launch. Each diamond-shaped aircraft carried two Mk.46 Torpedoes and a full load of sonar buoys. The pilots of VS-91 were all watching this one. They had themselves a real sub hunt.

    Verusean Smuggler Boat
40 Miles off the Coast of Yuktobania

    They wanted to board...

Now Zevic's situation had changed; he had strict orders to protect the cargo on board his boat. Okay then, he'd let them get a little closer before they did anything and he'd keep running.

    chuff chuff chuff

Zevic looked forward, out across the bow to see small puffs of water coming up. They were firing warning shots to try and stop the boat, and surely they would fire on the ship of they didn't keep moving. Zevic thought for a minute, and then frowned. They had their backs to the wall so he was going to take the quickest way out.

"Bring up an SA-23! Engage that helicopter." He barked to the nearest crewmember.

"Sir?" The man asked with a confused expression.

"You heard me, so do it!" He snapped.

Zevic knew he was doing a very risky thing, but this was the only way that might get them out of their predicament. If they boarded it was all over, but if they shot down the helo and ran they might be able to make it. They could at least get some distance from the Oseans and then hide if they really needed to. If it became desperate enough, they would even scuttle the shit. There were always more M70s to be delivered. He tensed as the helicopter again transmitting warnings over a loudspeaker. They might be able to see the man getting a shoulder-launched SAM ready, they might not. He came to realize they probably didn't, or were trying to radio for permission to fire. He saw the man who'd grabbed the weapon stand up from a hatch leading down to the lower decks and raise the weapon to fire.

    "Backblast clear!" He called.

A few seconds later the SA-23 screamed forward from its tube and into the sky,  Zevic wasted no time after that.

"Ready another SAM and get us out of here, now!" He shouted.

With that the boat started to move closer to the coast, maintaining its high speed.

"SAM in the air, SAM in the air!!" MGK gasped as he watched the weapon fly from the deck of the boat.

He fumbled with the controls and hit the flares release button. The pilot turned to the left after telling everyone to hang on, trying to get inside the missile's turn. The SA-23 quickly defeated the flares, but MGK could still try and outmaneuver it. He kept up the turn.

    <<Liberty this is Hornet 06, we've been engaged!>>

They just might make it...Come on, come on, come o-

He felt a jolt. The pilot looked back the best he could and saw the tail rotor and surrounding parts falling away. The MH-60 tipped forward and began to spin. MGK was thrown up in his seat, then pinned left as the machine went down towards the sea. It impacted the surface in a geyser of water.

Admiral Carter Dodge, James Wellington Battlegroup Commander, picked up the phone as soon as it rang. He peered through the Plexiglas of the bridge towards the southwest, where he'd been told that an MH-60S had been downed. He relayed the basic situation to the person on the other end of the line before he looked across the space.

"Sound General Quarters and tell OFS Liberty I want that boat sunk!" He called. Those on the bridge swung into action to address the situation.

"Yes admiral...yes Admiral I understand...we also have a potential sub contact and bogeys approaching out declared exclusion zone...yes Admiral Snow I will...aye aye, sir...aye aye sir, will do." He went on. The man hung up and picked up a different phone. It rang once before it was picked up.

"This is CAG." Captain O'Neil said.

"CAG, tell your F-21s to splash the bogeys near them and clear those SQ-47s to help splash the sub." The Admiral said, pulling his flat-billed cap down a little.

    "Aye aye, sir." CAG nodded.

    Redeye
<<Shogun 1, Shogun 1 this is Redeye...CAG says you've been granted permission to engage bogeys at Heading 187. Bogeys are now declared bandits>>

Vixen nodded and made her reply quick; she had a flight to command.

    Vixen
    <<Roger that Redeye...Three and Four push on bandits...bracket them>>

    Saber
    <<Three copies all>>

    Tex
    <<Four copies all>>

Eric switched his radar to Track-While Scan and made sure he had his AMRAAMs selected. He ordered Mark to go two miles abeam of him while he let his APG-79 do its job. The Flankers appeared on his radar at his two o' clock, turning towards him it seemed. He turned his nose at them before  snapping left; Mark did the same and heard his RWR tone changing. They wanted to get the J-15s to lose lock before they tried to shoot.

    Redeye
<<Serpent, Serpent this is Redeye. Take your flight and move on heading 190 to box the bandits in. Repeat, box the bandits in>>

Vixen stored the call in her overall understanding of the situation, but she was more concerned with fighting the Veruseans and surviving. Ryu and her split and started coming around to engage the Flankers before they could close or shoot. Instinctevly she trailed chaff to buy time. Ryu threw a look over towards her every few seconds as he came around quickly, shaking a little from the Gs clutching his whole body. He swung his nose past Eric and Mark to hear them call their launches.

    Saber
    <<Shogun 208, Fox 3! Fox 3!>>

    Tex
    <<Shogun 205, Fox 3...Fox 3!>>

On Eric's command, Mark hauled his F-21 to the right again to foil any radars trying to lock him and then went back to the right. The pilot tensed his whole body against the Gs and craned his neck to try and track the action going on out in the distance. He hoped delaying his second launch would get him a better chance of a kill this time around. He went wide of his lead and deployed chaff both during the turn and as he came out of it.

The Arleigh Burke-class destroyer had started making the tightest turn it possibly could as soon as they'd received orders to splash the "go-fast boat". The VBSS boat was recalled now that the mission had changed to destroying the craft. Inside the Combat Information Center, chatter buzzed while sailors of various ranks coordinated the attack. One of the young sailors called the Captain to his attention.

"Sir, we're authorized to use our 5-inch but nothing else at this time!" He relayed. The Captain nodded sourly' he guessed even after losing a 28-million dollar helo a 1.2-million dollar missile was still a waste. Very well, they'd do this the old-fashioned way.

"Flank speed towards the contact! ready the bow gun now!" He replied.

    "Yes sir!"

    OFS Valiant (CG-103)

"How far out are those Bullsharks?"

    "Ten minutes sir!"

Captain Kirkland looked forward again as the cruiser beared down on the Yuan-class submarine, following the guidance of its own systems and that of its ASW helo. They contact was faint but there; the Seahawk would be the most important part of the job with its higher mobility. Kikland has his ASROC tubes all armed. He wasn't going to give this guy any quarter...

    Cunami Flight
    Over the South Pacific

Cunami 1-1 cocked a brow as she broke right and went down, trailing chaff. The Oseans had fired first? That was new. Nonetheless she had two AMRAAMs after her. Cunami 1-1 had never seen actual fight, but she knew she had to start somewhere. Following training and instincts, she kept her side to the missile in hopes of break the lock or maneuvering so she could slip past the incoming missiles. The distance grew shorter and shorter and she could see the two weapons in the gray sky. Cunami 1-1 braced herself and started to turn towards the attack when the distance was small enough. Both weapons flashed by without detonating.

She searched the skies for the planes that'd shot at her and spotted them as two dots on the horizon. F-21s, no doubt; Osea had been using the fighter in Navy service since the start of the century. These ones were likely updated  from the first models, with new systems and weapons. Her own J-15 was about twelve years old...

    Cunami 1-1
<<Lead to Flight are we all still up?>>

    Cunami 1-3
    <<Three is up>>

    Cunami 1-4
    <<Four is up, Lead>>

Cunami 1-1 called twice for her wingman, 1-2. She searched around as she turned her nose towards the closest two F-21s, piloted by Eric and Mark. She saw a black blot in the distance, no chute. The pilot clenched her teeth in mild frsutration, but quickly stowed it as she lapsed into missile range for her PL-12. The pilot jinked left and right, timing so she'd be aimed at Eric's Thundrehawk when she came back to the right.  She kept an ear tuned to the RWR and radio. Finally the dots came withing her grasp. On her HUD, the TD box and diamond met and at 61 miles she fired two PL-12s.

    Cunami 1-1
    <<Cunami 1-1, Radi, Radi!>>

From her innermost wing pylons, the two AMRAAM copies dropped away and sped forwards, hoping to intercept Shogun 1-3. Cunami 1-1  broke left and dove to get low and come back up against the VF-138 machines. In the meantime her remaining two fighters went high and then dove at Vixen and Ryu as they were turning from the Y-9s. the two ELINT birds were going low to exit the fight. At Cunami 1-3's command, after they fired they would split and move to keep the F-21s from having any mutual support. Each fired two PL-12s at their targets and then split, trailing chaff. Cunami 1-3 eased into Ryu's turn while Cunami 1-4 went for a left hook against Vixen.

    Submarine Sabljarka
    Depth: 900 Meters

    The pings were getting louder...

Pietre knew what they were doing now: they were searching for him with the intent of either scaring him into filling his pants with fecal matter...or they were looking to sink his sub.

"Mr. Babic, we still have two torpedoes in the first two tubes, yes?" He asked. The man nodded.

"Turn us towards that Ticonderoga and fire them. If we can't kill them we can at least get them to go defensive while we escape." He said.

The XO started barking orders to the others. With that, the sub began a move to the right to fire the two 533mm-torpedoes at the Valiant.  With a rain of sonar-buoys likely filling the waters above him, Pietre would have to act fast and act carefully. He made sure that speed was kept in mind, as was the positions of the Oseans' detection systems. They needed to stay out of rings made by their adversaries. It was all Pietre could do right now: think. His crew had their orders and they would execute them.

"Flood Tubes 1 and 2!" He shouted when they had a bearing on the cruiser.

"Flood Tubes 1 and 2 aye!" A crewman shouted. There was a final pause as the last pieces fell into place.

"We have a bearing on the enemy cruiser!"

At that, Pietre gave the order to fire. After the weapons were gone, they would load all four tubes in case they really needed to fight. But for now, they would flee.

"Deploy decoys and turn us 180 degrees!" Pietre barked.

    March 29, 2025 (Local Time: 1442)
    Shogun Flight
    Over the South Pacific

    Saber
<<Tex, break formation and engage that bandit if you have a chance!>>

As Mark gave him a quick reply, Eric turned  to the left and dove, streaming chaff. He made a wide turn back to the left, aiming to use his speed and position to put the two missiles on a course to end up flying behind him. He kept a steady eye on the PL-12s as they corrected and changed course to intercept. Eric  now made a wide right, trailing more chaff and attempting to get behind the missiles' path of travel this time. He tightened his muscles and snapped into them, watching as they got ever closer. At the last second, he kept his eyes forwards. If they were to hit him, he didn't wanna see.

He felt the rumble of an explosion and briefly looked back to see a dissipating ball of fire from one of them. It'd detonated close, too close. But a quick scan over the other shoulder showed he was alright. Eric checked his radar, which had been tracking the J-15 the whole time, and saw Mark  coming up towards the enemy jet. He selected the Flanker while Mark went around the enemy fighter jet. Eric's AESA worked as fast as it could to get a shot.

    Tex
<<Ah'm gonna push em towards y'all, Saber! Take the shot, take the shot!>>

    Saber
    <<Roger that...Shogun 208, Fox 3!>>

Eric depressed the button and switched to his Sidewinders. He then went vertical and rolled over to come back down on top of the Flanker and hopefully pulled around so he'd be below the Flanker if it kept going and overshot. In the meantime Vixen heard Shamu's call while she was deploying chaff and pulling Gs. She summoned some words over the strain of physics.

    Vixen
<<Roger that Serpent...Shoguns 1-1 and 1-2 will remain clear of your shots....be heads up for Verusean Cupboards; not declared hostile...>>

G-forces sucked every time she had to combat them. She searched for the Flanker and the missile it'd shot and saw the weapon above her at her two o' clock. Vixen  rolled to the right and clawed for speed to out turn and overwhelm the missile. The PL-12 turned towards her and the whole thing turned into a very brief turning fight. The Osean had to be careful not to complete her turn to fast or else she'd end up right in front of the missile. Instead she slowed once she had enough speed and then dove when the missile was close enough. Another snap back to the right and she was safe.

    Vixen
    <<Jukebox, say status>>

Ryu was in the middle of a hard and fast dive for the deck and unable to report immediately in the midst of his situation. His first attempt at a reply only came out in grunts and gasps He pulled back on the stick and dared slow his flight towards the waves, leveling out at around 1000 Feet above the water. Ryu looked around as his RWR calmed and saw no missile anywhere near him. With a loud breath he pulled up.

    Vixen
    <<Jukebox report, say status>>

    Jukebox
    <<Shogun 1-2 is up, unengaged...I'm good>>

With that, Ryu started climbing to close in on the Verusean who'd shot at him, arming his AIM-9s in preparation for a close-range fight.

    March 29, 2025 (Local Time: 1443)
    OFS Valiant (CG-105)
    The South Pacific

"Torpedoes in the water! Torpedoes in the water! Heading 195!"

Captain Kirkland tensed and grabbed onto the rail as the ship started to turn away from the torpedoes and deployed their Nixie, a sonar decoy designed to draw the weapons away. The big ship started to move at a surprisingly nimble pace while its helos went on the hunt. For now the cruiser had to fight for its survival by losing the track of the torpedoes. The two Verusean-launched weapons screamed in at their top speed while those aboard their target. Kirkland listened as they drew in closer. Before he could ask the Nixie was as far back as it would go.

Now the seconds ticked down with an agonizing lack of speed. Kirkland listened as the first torpedo started going for the Nixie. He gulped hard as it kept going...and going...and going until it was away from them. The second one almost immediately cut away any relief the first's miss had, though.

"Order all hands to brace for impact!" Kirkland shouted instinctively.

As the alarm blared and the order was given, the second torpedo closed in on the Valiant as it was weaving and struck her just forward of her helicopter pad. In a second metal was pushed aside and water and flames rushed into the compartments nearest the impact. It was a horrible scene as sailors would simply vanish in a torrent of chaos. As damage control rushed to seal the hit and worked on the damage beyond that, something became apparent: OFS Valiant was losing speed. With the Yuan-class still out there, it was a death sentence.

    OFS Valiant
<<This is the Valiant, this is the Valiant. We've been hit in the aft by a torpedo and are rapidly losing speed! Request assistance, request assistance>>

The Verusean could take another shot at any second, Kirkland knew, but he had to at least pretend they'd survive. Much to his inner glee, the reply to their plight was quick.

    OFS St. Francis
<<Valiant this is the St. Francis, we're inbound to help. Maintain what speed you can and exit the area on Heading 206>>

The battlegroup's Oured-class (Virginia) sub had joined the battle.

    March 29, 2025 (Local Time: 1443)
    Cunami Flight
    Over the South Pacific

Cunami 1-1 deployed chaff and turned away from the missile to break its lock and start snaking around it. Out of the corner of her eye, she then saw two more trails inching towards her. With the first shot still tracking her, she had little in the way of an idea if the missiles were after her. Not wanting to take a risk, she deployed more chaff and broke again, turning for Eric now and increasing her speed. The AMRAAM he'd shot at her started to lose lead and eventually was pointing at the empty sky to the south. Cunami 1-1 readied another PL-12 and mad a quick shot before breaking up to roll and get a better view of the fight. She quickly spotted both the F-21s looking to gun her J-15 down.

She didn't know it but the four AIM-154s weren't for her, though. They were inbound for her flight's second pair. The two fighters broke into the attack like they would against any radar guided missile and moved to break the lock and get out of sight. There was a difference this time, though: these weren't AMRAAMs. They were faster, more than anything else, by one Mach. The weapons were already in terminal phase and at max speed. Cunami 1-4 got to experience the missile's abilities firsthand as he was pulling up to try and beat their dive. Cunami 1-3 witnessed the explosion, but saw a chute emerge from the growing fireball.

    Cunami 1-3
<<Four is down, I repeat four is down...Tidal we need back up here>>

    Tidal
<<Roger that Cunami, assistance is inbound>>

In the meantime the pilot looked around and made a circle. Below he spotted Ryu's Thunderhawk as it was rising. Cunami 1-3 dove downwards to engage with his PL-12s. He ended up behind Ryu as the Osean was rising and fired a PL-9 at the fighter from near the missile's max range.

    March 29, 2025 (Local Time: 1446)
    Verusean KJ-3000
    Over the Coast of Verusa

    Valkirie 1-1
    <<Repeat your last, Tidal?>>

The control gritted his teeth in frustration but forced a calm tone.

    Tidal
<<Valkirie 1, you are cleared to push across the coast and support Cunami 1. We will scramble Cunami 2 to assist further...Cunami 1-5, 1-6 maintain CAP near us>>

    Cunami 1-5
    <<Cunami 1-5 and 1-6 copy all>>

    Valkirie 1-1
    <Roger Tidal; requesting threat vector>>

The controller handed the location of the fight to the lead J-10 and then watched as the jets started to push for the action. The J-10 was one of Verusa's newer fighters, and the C models they employed brought a lot of advanced technologies that nations like Yuktobania and Osea hand onto their side. The fighters were stealthier and had more advanced systems than the J-8 or J-11/15. The radar screen displayed their progress as they came up the coast from the south and fanned out across the sea. With luck they'd be in the fight in another minute or two.

    March 29, 2025 (Local Time: 1443)
    Verusean Smuggler Boat
37 Miles off the Coast of Yuktobania

"Sir, enemy craft spotted to our rear!"

Captain Zevic looked back and peered into the afternoon air over the sea. After a minute he was handed a pair of binoculars and he was able to fully see it. It was a warship, an Osean Arleigh Burke-class destroyer. He didn't hesitate to act.

"Turn us towards the coast! Flak speed, prepare to scuttle the ship!" He ordered.

As the orders were spread throughout the ship, the man kept tracking the ship pursuing them. For such a large vessel, it was plowing through the waves at a disturbing rate. Near its knife-like bow was a small turret with a gun barrel protruding out, and it was aimed in their direction.

    March 29, 2025 (Local Time: 1446)
    Shogun Flight
    Over the South Pacific

    Redeye
<<Shogun, Serpent...be advised we have new bogeys crossing the beach...now declared bandits. Heading is 240, 278 Miles at Angels 23. We count four bandits>>

They were committing more, Vixen thought. They were committing more and that meant it wasn't a little territorial pissing match anymore. The Veruseans were changing their ROE and looking to drag the Oseans into a real fight. It was a small surprise, but she didn't spend long dwelling on it. Vixen brought her jet to the left and set her mind on the bandits coming into the fight.

    Vixen
<<Shogun 1-2, this Shogun 1-1...can you form back on me?>>

    Jukebox
<<Negative, negative; am engaged neutral with one bandit>>

Well so much for the new bandits. Vixen went back into a left turn and pressed towards Ryu's last known position.

    Vixen
<<Serpent, can you engage those bandits at 240? Shogun 1-1 is moving to save her wingman>>

She spotted the fight at her eleven. Ryu was just above the J-15 but out of position to engage the Flanker, which was being given a pretty good opening to hit him from below and behind as soon as he snapped up. The PL-9 he'd shot was losing its scent from the close shot and the violent maneuvers, which gave her relief. Vixen gave her subordinate a heads up and lowered her nose to give the AIM-9 she was readying the straightest shot at the Flanker. She increased the speed for a second to close the distance and then slowed when the symbology on her HMD-HUD lined up.

    Vixen
    <<Shogun 202, Fox 2!>>

While Ryu was pulling over into a dive to further avoid Vixen's shot chasing him and get further away from the PL-9, Eric and Mark were growing tired of the other J-15's antics. Eric would admit the pilot was good, but he didn't make a living letting good bandits live. The snap-shot made by the Flanker had allowed him some breathing room as the lock wasn't as strong as it could be. He went left of the missile, leaving it to chase some chaff, and nosed up to follow. Mark, unengaged, moved to support his lead and went into the vertical  after both other jets were screaming upwards. Whichever way the Flanker went, he would follow if Eric didn't score the kill.

    Saber
    <<Shogun 208, Fox 2!>>

    Now he would wait.

    March 29, 2025 (Local Time: 1443)
    OFS Liberty (DDG-108)
    The South Pacific

The Tactical Action Officer stopped a few feet away from the destroyer's CO and stood up straighter than she usually did.

"Skipper, we've got em in range. One fast boat heading for shore." She reported.

The senior man was of course watching the target through a pair of binoculars, but it still felt good to hear that they had the bastards responsible fr downing one of his helicopters in their graps.

"Fire at will...break pursuit if we get to close to shore." He ordered without looking away.

On the bow of the ship, the lone 5-inch gun let out a powerful boom as it sent a shell flying forwards. No more than three seconds later it thundered again as a second shell was fired. The destroyer went wide of the fast boat as it ran for tha coast. The gun started pulling lead on the other vessel, intent on sending shells into the waters where it would be moving once they reached its position. The crew of the Liberty waited with growing anticipation.

    March 29, 2025 (Local Time: 1443)
    OFS St. Francis (SSN-334)
    Below the South Pacific

The Oured-class nuclear attack sub pushed through the waves in pursuit of the fleeing Yuan class. If they were gonna get a chance to kill the Verusean, they weren't gonna share it. Many of the submariners aboard the St. Francis considered themselves a part of the Navy that seemed to be overshadowed by the glamour of the "airdales". This was their chance to get payback and some glory.

The ship had precious few minutes to act; the Yuan could not be followed far outside the fleet's perimeter. The Verusean Luyang and its two Jiangkai weren't to be trifled with. The crew worked hard to try and get a solid fix on the enemy sub; the Osean Captain who lead the St. Francis noted that he was seeing some very Yuktobanian behaviors in this Yuan-class's escape. He wondered if the man heading his prey might've spent some time with them. Maybe he was even a vet of 2010's events like the Osea...but it didn't matter either way. The St. Francis's sonar got a solid lock on its opponent a few seconds after it negated a decoy. It sent two Mk.48 torpedoes after the sub the second after that.

    March 29, 2025 (Local Time: 1447)
    Cunami Flught
    Over the South Pacific

Cunami 1-3 had his head tilted up when Vixen shot, so he wasn't able to react as fast as he could to the incoming missile. He turned into Vixen's shot and deployed flares, heading up and to the right towards safety. the AIM-9 had been shot far enough away to recognize the flares and make corrections. It closed in and went outside the turn of the J-15 as it moved to evade. This made the Verusean pilot believe he was safe. In truth he wasn't; the missile was turning back towards him, in his blind spot under him. It exploded and sent hot, jagged metal into the gaping maws that were his engine intakes.

    Cunami 1-3
    <<Lead, I've been hit...I'm losing the engines...okay that's it; Cunami 1-3 is ejecting>>

Cunami 1-1 gritted her teeth after she'd acknowledged that her only remaining support was bailing. Her fight wasn't too far over, either. She'd played her best cards but she'd run out of them and she'd made that one fatal mistake: She'd let Eric get behind her.  She was losing airspeed and altitude to use, forcing her to nose over into a dive to avoid stalling. As the ocean below filled her vision, Eric's missile struck and blew off her right tailfin. Cunami Flight was now out of it.

    Cunami 1-1
    <<Cunami 1-1 is ejecting!>>

    That just left the J-10s.

    March 29, 2025 (Local Time: 1448)
    Valkirie Flight
    Over the South Pacific

Valkirie 1-1 had expected to get shot at as soon as he and his flight had gotten anywhere near the fight. As a result he split his flight to engage the Oseans. He let the AIM-154s close in on his wingman and him so they could beat them at the last minute. The two jets kept loose but moved the same way, going up and trailing chaff. the Anacondas, at max speed, wouldn't be able to make any snap moves 1-1 figured. It was a close call still and brought the weapon very close, but Valkirie 1-1 and 1-2 were able to snake around the missiles fired at them. Valkrie 1-1 found he was just inside PL-10 range, and he didn't hesitate.

    Valkirie 1-1
    <<Valkirie 1-1, Radi, Radi!>>

Two of the AMRAAM-like missile went sailing off, motor rockets burning brightly. They were aimed at both Rosenthal jets, one destined for each F-14. In the meantime Valkirie's second half wasn't as lucky. Valkirie 1-4 had gone low when the pair went in different directions, which was  something the AIM-154 following him could match. He then broke left towards the coast, hoping to then snap back, but he'd taken too much time. As he was perdendicular to the missile, it struck him, securing Sharky and Shamu's second kill of the day. the J-10 exploded in a ball of flame and black, oily smoke as the missile hit if on the spine. Valkirie 1-3 was able to escape death, but not without several bad bruises on his jet.

    Valkirie 1-3
<<Valkirie 1-4 is down, 1-4 is down! Don't see a chute! I've also been hit but I'm okay. Likely gonna have to bug out!>>

    Valkirie 1-1
<<Roger that 1-3, head for the coast. Two, with me>>

    Tidal
    <<Negative Valkirie...you are instructed to disengage>>

Valkirie's lead pilot blinked and frowned in indignation

    Valkirie 1-1
    <<Repeat your last, Tidal?>>

He felt like he was repeating himself too soon.

    Tidal
<<All aircraft under Tidal are ordered to disengage from the Oseans. our Y-9s are out of the way, there is no reason to keep fighting>>

Valkirie growled but took himself and his wingman to the left to cover 1-3 while he withdrew. It seems as if the local commander had lost his nerve and made a snap decision. Nonetheless Valkirie would follow orders; their fight was over now.

    March 29, 2025 (Local Time: 1444)
    Verusean Smuggler Boat
30 Miles off the Coast of Yuktobania

At first the shells landed behind the ship, which gave Zevic some confidence. They just had to get out of range and into shallow water, and then the destroyer would be unable to reach them. He held tight as the boat went through its turn to the left. Still he couldn't help but feel on edge over the fact they were being fired on. It was the first time that this much had gone wrong. He tried to focus nonetheless; it was only a matter of time until they had to get creative. They fought off a helicopter; they could outrun this Osean ship. Zevic had confidence in himself, and his crew.

Suddenly plumes of water started appearing out in front of their craft. The ship was leading them and trying to walk its rounds onto their vessel. Zevic closed his eyes to start blinking out the spray from the misses as they fell on the boat. It was the last thing he'd ever feel; the next shell hit the smuggling craft dead center. Zevic, along with his crew, were swallowed in a torrent of water and debris as the boat folded under the impact, disappearing in the storm created by the shell.

    Submarine Subljarka
    Below the South Pacific

"Shut up!" Captain Pietre shouted to calm his crew's panic.

"Deploy decoys and turn to Heading 260! Be prepared to slow when I say!" He went on.

The Yuan-class submarine lurched to the left as noisemakers floated from openings on the sides of the ship. Pietre then ordered the ship to increase speed. They would go too tight and too fast for the torpedoes to reach them before it ran out of fuel. Through updates given to him by subordinates, he figured the weapons weren't being wire guided. the Osean must've gotten too eager, which made him smile a little. To pile on the counters, he ordered the sub down, below the thermocline.

"What are the torpedoes current position and track on us?" He asked as he heard the pinging echoing through his sub change.

"Torpedoes are currently 600 Meters out...losing track!" a voice called back, surprised by the last part.

"Very good; when they lose track, we shall turn to 190 and we shall disappear, understood?" He said.

Under Pietre's direction, the submarine continued to exploit the advantaged it'd started until the two Mk. 48s had been fooled and were now mindlessly swimming off into the seas away from them. The ship then slowed and carefully rose, slipping silently for home. Pietre had once again cheated the Oseans of a kill.

With the immense range between them and the PL-10s, the AMRAAM clones weren't much of a factor for the Basilisks, but they didn't take any chances, streaming their towed decoys and dumping chaff and flares while turning perpendicular to the missiles as their self protection jammers worked to spoof the missiles' guidance.  As expected the missiles missed  When they were in the clear, the two F-14s turned back in the direction of the J-10s.

All her wingmen up, Vixen went about reforming the two CAP stations they'd been manning until they could be relieved. She was getting towards Bingo Fuel and she didn't have a full weapons load. She watched as Ryu settled back into the other leg of the CAP before she turned to go down the Cold Leg. Something inside her felt uneasy, though. They'd committed fighters after the shooting started. Whether it was the local commander getting ballsy or a sign they were willing to take steps towards war was above her paygrade. She didn't like it, though; it meant that they were more or less failing to keep the peace. Way to go, UN...

To her east, Eric and Mark settled into their CAP station again. Eric looked over the ordinance and gas he'd expended. He was one kill more, which brought the total up to three. Mark was now one step away from ace; Eric couldn't help but feel a little jealous of his friend. Instead of hanging onto that jealousy, though, he decided to do the usual.

    Saber
    <<Nice shooting today, Tex>>

Mark grinned, also very aware of how close he was to five kills. He flashed a thumbs up as the two F-21s passed and chuckled.

    The South Pacific

Admiral Dodge watched as the relief CAP for Shogun and Serpent was getting launched, comprised of birds from VF-138. He'd been following the situation from the Liberty sinking the fast boat to St. Francis chasing off the Yuan-class submarine. The Valiant was moving very slowly and her slot to be filled by their other Tico-class boat, Joseph Steward. They'd be sent a relief cruiser while the Valiant went to the nearest friendly port for help. He hoped it would come soon.

Until then he had a lot of explaining to do so the higher-ups back home would have an idea of what exactly had happened. In the back of his mind, Carter Dodge hoped this meant they'd get to retaliate. He took pride in commanding his fleet; he didn't like the thought of being punched and then told to be a good boy and not do anything.
